Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

  • This evening, I joined an LFG looking to get Athena rep up by doing more of the Thieve's Haven Athena Run. Overall, it was a great experience on a brigantine, with a friend and 1 other crewmate who shall remain nameless, because... SPOILER ALERT! Bad guys don't deserve to be remembered.

In any case, we executed 4 of the 5 chapters flawlessly, turning in often, while avoiding a sloop and a galleon and sinking both in a final 3-way battle where everyone dug in. We successfully used the chain shot, and firebombs to wreak havoc. After our glorious victory, I sped back to Thieve's Haven intent on finishing the voyage before the opposition returned. Sadly, to my dismay, my friend had to leave - I waved goodbye to him as he left.

As we arrived to the island, my remaining crewmate and I were attacked by a stowaway, that was quickly dispatched. Then a 2nd stowaway, or so I thought, kept throwing fire bombs at the ship. We checked the entire ship, the surrounding water, and the nearby island cliffs, and found nothing. Cautiously, I proceeded to dig up the 1st of 6 treasures. My crewmate then said he had a friend that could join us.

News flash! Big mistake! As soon as his friend joined, the voyage vanished, and I found myself locked in the brig. Both taunted me mercilessly in party chat, with my crewmate admitting to me that there was no other mysterious stowaway, and that it was he who burned the ship all along. They played instruments and set fire to the ship. Before I could even protest, my game decided to suddenly crash - a blessing in disguise, I suppose. I quickly reported both players to both XBL Enforcement and to Rare's Support Team. Knowing my track record for reporting, their merciless fun should end very quickly.

The reason I bring this story to your attention is because I hear of this happening in open matchmaking all of the time, and have avoided it expressly for this reason - oh well, I guess there's a 1st time for everything. Still, it amazes me that many players will willingly go out of their way to ruin someone's day - on their own crew! It honestly just blows my mind... 🤯

    Thoughts? 🤔

  • @galactic-geek Some people are rude. And...well...let's say that "they are not very smart and pleasant persons". That's why I sail alone or with trusty mate which one i can relly.

  • Just another day with an open crew.

All sorts of dysfunction are expected when playing this way.
Many players disdain playing Open Crew for this reason.

LFG and the Xbox app don't work for me on a pc, so I use what the devs give me, Open Crews.
I bring my thickest skin and dont hesitate to leave at the first sign of dysfunction.
Unfortunately, it gets hard to do the best things in game like FotD and new crew based content.

  • @galactic-geek

Humans, what do you need more to know?

    Happy Corona Party rolleyes

  • This sort of nonsense happens all the time sadly with open crews nothing new. Just last night I joined a crew parked at crooked masts with a mission there, 1 guy on the island the the other dropping loot in the than raising anchor to take off with the boat. As soon i saw that I re anchored and was blunder bombed to the ferry. We brigged him he left and we grabbed all the loot again we just lost a few extra minutes of time at the island.

  • @closinghare208 Thank you.

Also, just to reiterate for everyone - this was NOT an open crew. It was closed. That's why I found it so jarring.
