Time-Limited/Exclusive Content is destroying my love for Sea of Thieves. Here are my thoughts.

  • @kingslayer-kurt

Point can be understanded but apperently not all are on the same side as u matey.

U want limited exclusive content which u are allowed to to obtain. But its limited exclusive. Opening it again would make it not exclusive or limited. So im not sure about adding it again. U say u cant get it but the ones going for it cus its limited get slapped if they open it because u know what it apperently wasnt exclusive limited.

An other example: I pay 10 dollars to run a marathon. Im not fastest but heck i payed 10 dollars i want my full worht of it gimme my 1st price. Makes sense?

  • @kingslayer-kurt How are you meant to summon the OG meg if it's been defeated? Merrik no longer makes Hungering Deep drums or speaking trumpets? Or the Dark Relics? They've already been collected, it wouldn't make sense that you can re-collect them. Same with Cursed Sails. And how will you deliver gifts to the Masked Stranger if she moves somewhere else? Lore wise it makes no sense.

    @kingslayer-kurt
It is a lost cause. That's all everyone has been trying to tell you.

Even so, it is unfair, almost akin to borderline robbery, and I will not stop vocalizing my disdain for it. This thread has already become huge in less than a day so obviously there are people who take issue with it.

The issue was addressed and the compromise was reskins in the black market. I personally was against even this but have accepted it.

A compromise is not always a solution.

For better or worse Rare went down that route in the beginning and wont be re-releasing them.

Then I better keep b**chin' about it.

I do believe Rare has stopped this practice now with the events? Correct me if I'm wrong. Cant remember if the tome cosmetics are time limited. I've not been able to play for almost a month due to illness.

Don't think so. The Tomes of Power/Curses are, from what I've heard, time-limited as well.

I always fly the founders sails and wear a cosmetic from each event. Bone crusher eye patch, hungering deep scar, wailing barnacle tattoos, etc.

I commend you. You give some us a fighting chance at even seeing the content in game, which is a big point I'm trying to make. I don't want to look up a huge YouTube compilation of the rarest sails in the game. I want to see them in the frickin' game. Because I paid money for it. Please, don't ever stop wearing/adorning that stuff so other players can see it. EVER!

Anyway. I apologise for ragging on you earlier.

No problem man, I can be very toxic online in games sometimes, but I know that this isn't the place for it, and I'm trying to remain as civil as I can, as being banned would be devastating to me. Thanks for apologizing and please know that I'm just trying to voice my opinion about something that I think matters. Maybe it doesn't, though. At the end of the day, it IS just a game.

Poor excuse but I am in agony with the aforementioned illness and reacted to this thread poorly.

    Feel better matey.

    I WASN'T AROUND THEN, SO I WOULDN'T KNOW THAT! :/

If "lore" in a video game effects how people unlock or cannot unlock content, development priorities need to come to a screeching halt and people need to realize that if you spend money on a game, money that can be used for other, more important things (food, bills, etc) that you can't always buy another game right away! I don't want to reveal anything about my financial situation or tell anyone details about my personal life here on some public forum, I have major anxiety when it comes to online interactions, but buying a game like this is a RARE occasion for me. Very rare. I put most of my cash into making my computer and couldn't even buy a game for a year. I don't have a great job. (IBN4 get better at life mate LOL) I played free games. So now when I finally do, there is a bunch of stuff in it I will never be able to get because I didn't have the luxury of getting it when it first came out? I feel like I'm rambling again. But I hope that makes sense. It's not fair. The system isn't fair, and never will be.

  • OP does not realize that all the time limited content is not replayable because it was designed for versions of SoT at that time.
They are part of the evolution of SoT's timeline, and as such are not compatible with today's live version.

OP also fails to realize that time limited events are the reason some of us keep coming back, and stay engaged with SoT for nearly two years.

    @Kingslayer-Kurt

Acceptance is the first step to moving forward.
But I find your blend of envy, passion, and salt most delicious.

    Nice edit there, Barnabas.

  • So in part, I think we need some exclusivity in-game for some events, and maybe another celebration or important dates, for me thats okay and udnerstandable. But I dont see fair the amount of thoose cosmetics that Rare has included in the game behind a paywall. Can all of us remember this is a COSMETICS BASED GAME??! wait, I think I can exagerate it even more; CAN ALL OF US REMEMBER ITS A BARELY EMPTY WORLD WITH THE SAME RECYCLED VOYAGES AND WITH RE-SKINS IN A GAME BASED ON COSMETICS IN WHICH THEY ARE MAKING US PAY EVEN MORE MONEY FOR SOME EXCLUSIVITY COSMETICS??!!

I dont know about you guys, but do you really consider they need to realease all that in-game exclusive comsetics??? For Kraken Sake, RARE! IT'S YEAR 2 AND ALL YOU still do is recycle voyages and realease RE-SKINS. CAN WE HAVE ACTUALLY GOOD COSMETICS TO BUY?!?! IS THAT MUCH TO ASK FOR?!?!?

I loved this game so much, but the tedious nonsense farm of gold and the time it takes to complete most of all the stuff its getting players tired. Im talking for me and for a lot of friends who played this game and dont even want to play the game anymore. And its nothing new, game felt empty since the start. Of course they are making imrpovements on the gameplay, but come on. Im always arguing about the same, this game launched almost 2 years ago, and we got... Fire?? FIRE?! I LOVE FIRE, But really? FIRE AT YEAR 2 ??! idk, I just feel so dissapointed with this game nowadays. The barely add anything, why can't they just realease 700 cosmetics to shut our mouths? No. We have to wait 1 month to get re-skins and 5 New cosmetics in the Black Market, oh and 3 annoying limited time voyages.

And community keeps clapping we got fire at this point.... lmaaaaaao. A mechanich that should be implemented at launch of the game. No coments. I can understand they need time to create new concepts, new tales, new mechanics, new areas, whatever. But its unacceptable to see they can't realease cosmetics for a GAME BASED IN ******* COSMETICS!!!

And then Rare anounces: We are devoloping a new game. But no worries, we have different teams working on Sea of Thieves and another one working for the new game, so Sea of thieves keep moving on and getting updates.
Oh yeah! THANKS. Cuz if we got 20 (exaggerating) cosmetics in 2 ******* YEARS, WE ARE GONA GET 5000 with less people working for the game, right?? And community still clapping and thanking them for filling the game with nothing and making us pay for "exclusive cosmetics" when we already payed for a FULL ******* EMPTY COSMETICS GAME. I bought a bird in the emporium, and thats all my money they are gonna get from me until I consider REAL IMPROVEMENTS for the game.

Im just starting to think that they do this in purpouse or something, to see until how far they can get until the community gets tired. But all they recive are aplausses for doing re-skins and re-voyages. So we just have what we deserve. I dont know if people just doesnt see this things or are just dum*. Anyway if you are all happy with this keep paying real money for cosmetics in a game based in cosmetics, because yes, because all that makes sense.

And Im a usual player, not a casual neither I consider a veteran of the game. And i've been defending this game since I started playing aroung July 2018 and until some months ago, when for me this game is starting to feel stuck in a bucle of nonsense and un-improvements. Just the game itself feels like a failed attempt to be what could have been the BEST pirate online game ever. And it's just dissapointing and sad.

    Yehaaaaa!!!
Spread the curse in the seas!!

  • It is frustrating when you enjoy a game where you put endless hours of grinding into and you run into limited content in which you missed out on. It really does suck. I feel the same way as you, yet I like the limited content because you don't see this stuff everywhere, it gives you that rare exclusive feeling when you are able to obtain it. I don't like games where most content is easily obtainable because everyone has it, which to me brings no excitement to obtain it. I have people compliment my limited content all the time, that would not happen if it was not limited because everyone would have it and it wouldn't be as cool.

  • I think this post is slowly running its course @Deckhands?

  • @kingslayer-kurt

I'll be blunt, but I'm not trying to be mean...

You should just get over it, honestly.

This is an online multiplayer game where cosmetics are the sole form of self-representation for players. There should be and always will be some exclusive stuff that not everyone is going to get. It is completely fine.

I'm actually astonished that you mentioned the Banana sails, that was a special reward designed for a specific contest and only a few players. The players who own those sails are a part of Sea of Thieves history!

Rare, always caters to new players and never caters to the old players. A very easy thing for them to do to actually cater to their long-term players that have been around for a long time would be to allow them to have their exclusivity for all of the cosmetics they have been around to earn throughout the game's history.

Let veteran players have something special and unique to show for being engaged players through different periods in the game's lifespan, it will not affect your gameplay at all and veteran players shouldn't have to lose out on this because you are a completionist.

You do not have to have everything. It is not "robbery" or "unfair" by any definition of those words for there to be cosmetics in the game that can no longer be earned. You just sound like a silly, petulant child when you say things like this.

Besides, Rare has already said they intend to make sure the exclusives stay exclusive in order to honor the players who got them. They may release some stuff as color variants later on, but not the originals.

  • @kingslayer-kurt said in Time-Limited/Exclusive Content is destroying my love for Sea of Thieves. Here are my thoughts.:

@targasbr What are these "modifications" you speak of? Can you give me an example of that?

We had the Kraken Wheel for example:

And now we have the Inky Kraken Wheel:

They are the "same", with some modifications.

  • @octopus-lime Don't worry. This isn't the last you've heard from me on the subject.

  • @Kingslayer-Kurt

My friend, I need you to hear me. I am here with you. I agree with everything you said. Why should I not my as cool as someone who simply purchased the game before me.

My thousands of hour can’t compare to the rarity of the day one patch. I’m better than most yet psychologically I am trash because I don’t have the rare cosmetics from launch or hungering deep.

This game is already dead compared to other games. SoT has 0 chance of getting number 1 trending.

I need you to hear me. I am here. Others are also. Nobody likes being different but I can promise you that today gave myself and many other hope. Hope that we can be looked as legends out on the seas because right now, it isn’t possible to become a true legend.

Keep fighting, keep enjoying the beauty the game offers. But most of all keep up hope.

Patience will help. Over time something will be done.

    Sincerely, Your friend

  • @amishhmann I am not completely against limited time content but i think its dumb when they make one par of the set limited and the other not limited
for example the wailing barnacle set. The pants, equipment are not limited but the ship items and other clothes are

If they make a set limited then release all at once or just have unique timelimited items that are not apart of any set.

  • Someone remind me though,

I distinctly remember Joe Neate saying when the time limited cosmetics came out the first time round he said that they would re-release them into the world at a later time didn't he? I could have sworn I heard him say that.

Saying something like "Don't worry if you don't get them now, we plan on re-releasing all cosmetics again in future updates so that players have a second chance to earn everything"

Something to that nature. I'll look for the video but I SWEAR I remember him saying that. Could have changed his mind though.

Just like his Athena commendations. "We are tracking everything!"....."We weren't tracking anything!!"

    They were tracking it.....shenanigans.

  • @mferr11 said in Time-Limited/Exclusive Content is destroying my love for Sea of Thieves. Here are my thoughts.:

@kingslayer-kurt Jeez man nearly everyone in this thread thinks you are wrong but you're so stubborn and believe you deserve stuff for not being here. What are you on about.

Sidenote: What IS the cosmetic you want so badly?

I don't think the issue is he wasn't here. The issue is the mechanic behind it.

Players are upset that it ruins their accomplishment which is nonsense, because if we compromise and suggest that they re-release the cosmetics under something harder they would still cry foul. Like the bone crusher set was for sinking the skeleton ships right? Well why not have it tied to sinking 1000 skeleton ships?

Honestly if I think about it, sinking 1000 skeleton ships NOW is a lot harder time wise then the cursed crews because lets face it. How hard were the events? The hardest part was forming an alliance to get the commendations required for an alliance not the actual event.

Also to continue on a post I mentioned earlier, there is one other issue with time limited cosmetics or exclusive cosmetics. Eventually anyone who has them stops playing and they are not part of the game anymore.

Stories are stories when there is a story to tell. Its like tree falling in the woods. If there is no proof of the story, was there even a story ever to begin with?

For those talking about "its my story, its my trophy" this is very true. Its your story, your trophy. Which means if they re-release the cosmetics, your story doesn't change, your trophy doesn't change.

You can still tell anyone and everyone "I got the cosmetics during cursed crews! Not like these peasants. I'm an OG!" Which you would have stats in your achievements and dates to prove it.

We all have our own stories to share in this game. Every story and experience is different. You have your story which doesn't change in any way if someone else has their own story to tell.

Share the experience to other newer players.

Eventually players will stop picking up this game because they will start being told "Don't play it man, you've already missed out on a ton of stuff so its not even worth it anymore."

    My 2 cents anyways.

  • @xultanis-dragon you are right!

I just watched the first bilge rat adventure dev update that was about skeleton thrones and yes Joe Neate did mention rereleasing the items someday

  • Just joined the discussion.

About the fact that micro-transaction in SoT made you lose interest in the game:

Let me remember you that Sea of Thieves has been out for almost TWO YEARS and keeps giving UPDATE FOR FREE, how do you expect that a one time buy game that costs 50$ to live for ever for free? I want this game to lastas much as it can tbh.

They could add new zones of the seas with new enemies and loot accessible only if you pay 30$ and call that a DLC (Like other MMO do/did). Instead, they gave you a persistent shop where you buy just COSMETICS. I don't know about you, but when I buya game I prefer to keep playing the new updates for free instead of paying more moeny TO PLAY. Having a shop that sells just COSMETICS (aka optional stuff) for money is fine. If you want to support the developers, micro-transaction can be a good way to do it, you buy a Monkey, they get money and pay the bills. I don't like buying stuff with micro transaction, especially if I already bought the game, but the good part about it is that I DON'T HAVE TO, I can keep playing all the content the game has to offer because for free because the shops just sells optional stuff (I actually ended up buying a bird with the ancient coins that I got FOR FREE for the christmas event). Imagine having no shop but you have to pay 5/10$ for each story of the Tell Tales.

About the Time-Limited stuff I kind of agree but not for your same reason:
I think those events are too frequent and last too little. There should be time-limited cosmetics for major updates and anniversary, Time-Limited stuff every month feels less interesting and "too frequent to feel special" if you know what I mean. But anyway the event should last at least a couple days if not an entire week. It actually happened to me to loose one of those cosmetics that you can get if you log on one specific day cause of a coincidence: I had internet issues that required me to change my modem and fix some other stuff which took 2 days and couldn't log in. I understand that this kind of stuff is unusal and is more of a coincidence, but with over 500k active players (that's a guess made out of some statistics that I know) even 100 players may costantly loose this stuff because of coincidences. Giving it a couple days or a week has no way of ruining the event and should give everyone the chance to get the cosmetics.

  • I completely agree.
People argue that if they rerelease the cosmetics the they will loose value.
I think thats not true because they will still have the old commendations for completing the old events and will still have their story to tell of how they got those items.

And yes the recolors are a compromise
But comprise is not a solution

  • @nukdar Game based on cosmetics?
    alt text

Dude, if you play only for cosmetics just pay an artist to make you a pirate model lol. This is an open-world action-adventure game, not a Cloth's shop simulator. You should play for the action and the adventure in this vast Pirate World. Cosmetics should be a opnional thing to make you look better but doesn't change the game play at all.

"Vast" Pirate World. Sure... "Vast". That's what im pointing out, the game only offers cosmetic for the players. So what is the point on not giving them what the game is ment to offer? The game is based on being a delivery Man in the seas all the time... Except for the Tall Talles which are the best addition.

And no, I dont play only for cosmetics, but when u take 2 years to deliver fire to your community, the least thing community can expect from Rare is something as insignificant as a variety of cosmetics to be entertained buying and playing to achieve. Until they add new other gameplays and mechanics to do so we can have more variety.

  • @nukdar Tbh I don't really care about the Cosmetics personally, but I kind of agree with the "we don't have content stuff", since I recently posted my opinion about it, here's the thread if you are interested:

  • @unclebob1023 I agree with you 100%. I like the main idea behind limited time content, yet I agree things should be adjusted as some don't make sense, I do agree with you there.

  • I love how envious new pirates are that know what skins I’m wearing and know that they can’t get them because they weren’t here. I love that I have something special to symbolize the adventures I’ve had and that other pirates recognize them when they see them.

I love that some people think they are trash because the don’t have the day one eyepatch and will never get it. I have mine. The launch crew eye of reach too. Wailing barnacle hull. Anniversary cannons and sails. Skull face paint. I must be super pirate to those people, they must crumble inside when they recognize me.

I wish people could respect something for what it is and try to improve it instead of break it down and ruin it like they do with so many aspects of this beautiful game.

Campaign for new cosmetics to tell your story from your point of entry. That’s all you really have a right to acquire in this system. Being told no by the devs, being disagreed with by the majority of contributors to the post, being presented logic and reason and ignoring it all isn’t making a stand. It’s being stubborn and refusing to accept things.

Don’t attach so much personal value to cosmetics and loot. Get back in the game and look silly and have fun.

  • If your love for this game gets broken by some limited time cosmetics - it's not true love then. Just your fomo that is talking here.

  • @kingslayer-kurt said in Time-Limited/Exclusive Content is destroying my love for Sea of Thieves. Here are my thoughts.:

@mferr11 Everyone thinks the issue is because I was not there. It's not because I was not there, in where I take issue. I'm fine with missing an event, as long as the content is there later to get in some form. AS IT WAS ORIGINALLY, I might add, again.

As for what specifically. All of it. Every piece. I want to see everything and play with everything. I don't care how greedy that sounds. There's someone out there with all of it and I know he's looking down at these posts laughing at me.

I paid money for a product - I want that product. I want what I spent my money on. The Banana Sails are fine. A contest is fine. I'll even overlook the dang codes for stuff with the peripherals for sale. But the time-limited content is just infuriating and I genuinely feel like I've been taken advantage of even though I paid (roughly) the same amount of money than everyone else.

This isn't real life, it's game. I shouldn't have to devote every month I have to playing just to make sure one day I can see I got it all and got my money's worth. I'm not even trying to flex at the endgame because I don't consider myself that great at the game. I guess people just can't understand my point.

Dude, you have access to all of the content we had back then and more.

When I spent $60 on this game, all I had was voyages. Yes, voyages were all you could do, and maybe a skull fort if you saw one.

Do you want to know what that $60 price tag gets you today? Everything that we spent $60 on when it was just skull forts and voyages, and then you get everything that was added after that - we're talking skeleton ships, the Devil's Roar region, the Fishing, Tall Tales, The Arena, Fort of the Damned, Fire.

You're getting the product you paid for. You can go and do every commendation that was added to the game, you just can't earn the cosmetics. That doesn't mean you're being ripped off or deprived of a product you paid for, and it is absolutely asinine to say that you are.

Time limited and exclusive cosmetics are fine, again, you don't need to have everything. The one thing older players actually get to have is these mementos and unique items for their participation in the game's history, and it does not need to be ruined by completionists who think they should have absolutely everything.

  • Its not a 60$ price tag today, its a 50 dollar one. So that makes the argument that he payed for the game and should thus get access to time-limited cosmetics even less valid as he probably payed less than those who did it a year ago. So he got much much more for 10$ less.

I personally would be fine with them re-releasing some of the old cosmetics that actually make sense to be re-released. Hungering Deep Stuff makes no sense, stuff like the Mercenary stuff does make sense as nothing actually stops people from being mercenaries and the like. The reaper hulls/sails do not make sense as they were tied to a specific event. Wailing barnacle I would actually see making sense to be re-released (especially if in a different colour). I personally think what they are doing now is the right thing to do. They make it so that the generic "limited" stuff is still available, which I like. But when they have new events they should keep some of the stuff from that time-limited if it makes sense and is not generic.

  • As I'm a day one player and I read 15% of this pointless thread. Is it wrong for me to just say no this is pointless you both right... But man it feels good to have all the seadog stuff pirate legend stuff Athena stuff. But what's weird to me nobody I mean nobody ever says the hunters call needs a nerf. I respect them more then anything. .........Mic drop for point less arguments

  • @lizalaroo @Bugaboo-Bill The only issue there is... I am always out of pocket ;)

Nah its all good - I am a doubloon and gold hoarder so always fully stocked!

  • @jofjjay listen. You werent there for the event, you dont get the event reward.

I got the day 1 eyepatch because i played on day 1.

I felt the same way when i missed out on stuff. Just get over it and keep playing so you dont miss any more to come.

  • @klutchxking518 that is kinda the issue.
The game starts to feel like a chore.
There are so many people that jus log in to the game to get the monthly time limited cosmetics and not because they actually want to play the game for fun.

Dont get me wrong I like the game, but sometimes I want to play other games too.
And yes the monthly stuff I come back for but I rarely even enjoy it.
The quest are always similar, but I do them to get the cosmetics.
It just starts to feel as a chore .

Hope you understand what I mean

  • @jofjjay alright but still.

This stuff keep generating envy and it is not long term hood for the game
    Envy = Bad
When a player sees another player with some time limited stuff it might discourage him/her and he could stop playing

It might sound stupid but its how it is

  • solution is simple, dont be envious.

    thx Aunt Edith
