I keep winding up with several chests and no keys to unlock them. Do you just have to luck up and see a Keymaster wandering a beach?
How do I get ashen keys?
@tedakin
Keymasters will randomly spawn on islands.
A keymaster and a guardian will spawn on the next to last wave of an ashen fort.
And you can catch keys while fishing using no bait.@tedakin said in How do I get ashen keys?:

Expect the fort gives you a chest. Unless your still trying to open a stolen chest it seems the only ways are to fish and random encounters...

Random spawns are sure
Leftover voyages are maybe.
Fishing has 3 tiers: Devil's Roar +1, Random or non bait fishing +/-0
Pondie fishing-1
I have NOT caught a key but I've not REALLY tried.Hmm... May I ask where you find such info? I'm always curious about the way things work in the game.
My own recent observation: pond fishing on Mermaids Hideaway over about 3 game days I caught 3 Ashen Keys and 2 pieces of Treacherous Plunder.
Forum junkie. I hit the unread threads search. And scan for useful information. 😅 and to watch the drama sometimes lol. I always mark all as read when I'm done so I don't have as much to scan next time
What does it look like when you catch a key or something other than a fish?
Does a fish still appear? What indicates you've hooked it?
I'm asking cause I'm planning on trying for some Ashen Cheats my next session and want to know what to look for when fishing for keys.
Like, if I see a fish in the water, am I safe reeling in and casting again, or is there still a chance for a key?
@*aca-hombre No fish, no vibration to note you've caught anything. You will see it on the end of the line, sometimes a glint or you'll see the key lengthwise. Sometimes the waves make it hard to see, I caught one without knowing it until I reeled in the line and saw it on the end. But if you've had the line in the ocean for a while and haven't gotten a fish to bite, you likely have one on the line so should reel it in.
@Va'c'a-Hombre When I'm fishing for Ashen Keys or Treacherous Plunder I snap the line back immediately when I see any fish appear. The keys and plunder seem to just appear on the end of your line and they just sit there, they don't fight back or run. ;-)
The keys are obvious, you can see them glowing. The plunder is harder to tell what it is until you reel it in. Also, stick to ponds for easier viewing and more frequent casts, you want the mosts casts possible.
@pithyrumble dude if it is hard for you to get it im kinda mad, I got a key while fishing whilst on the Maiden Voyage
