Hardcore Mode

  • Lately, I've been thinking about how fun a hardcore mode for Sea of Thieves would be. I've come up with quite a few ideas as to how a Hardcore Server might work, I'd love to have some opinions on my ideas, and see some other ideas thrown in as well.

    1. No More Wind Lines - I realized how cool this would be when I had a bug happen to me while playing the other day, where the wind lines disappeared. As this was happening, I was forced to use my flag as a means to know where the wind was coming from, and I really enjoyed it.

    2. No More Mermaids - This is a big one. If your ship sinks, you are now stranded, you will have to die to respawn at your new ship, or you can do whatever else you wish to do in the meantime.
If you get sent overboard, or intentionally jump overboard, you will not be able to hitch a ride with a mermaid any longer, you will have to die, or have your crew bring the ship around.
This will make Ship combat much more SHIP oriented, there will be less jumping off and swiming to an enemy ship and boarding, and much more ship vs ship action. As there will now be more risk to missing an opportunity to board an enemies ship, making people think twice about it.
(At the very least, make Mermaid spawn times take much longer, like a solid minute to two minutes. Though I'd prefer they were just gone for Hardcore.)

    3. Limited Items - Quest Items and Player Equipment is limited and shared. For example, there are only two shovels per crew, one compass per crew, one spyglass per crew, etc. Also only one treasure map, only one Tall Tale book, etc. Creating more of a requirement to assign jobs and tasks to specific crewmates.

    4. Map - Your ship does not appear on your map, to navigate you will have to use your compass and landmarks, maybe even the stars.
Using the Reapers Mark flag will still make you appear on other peoples maps, but not your own.

    5. No More Sparkles - Treasure does not sparkle anymore. This is something that bugs me in adventure mode despite it being beneficial to me.

    6. No More Names - Names do not appear for pirates outside of your crew. You can choose to display your crewmate's names, but other pirate's names will not appear anymore, making stealth much more possible.

    7. Reflections - Spyglass reflection gone, and Eye of Reach reflection only occurs during the daytime.

    8. Friendly Fire - Cannons can deal friendly fire damage, if you're aboard another ship and your crew is firing upon that ship with your cannons, they can deal damage to you. Aside from Kegs and Fire, Cannons will be the only thing that deals friendly fire damage.

    9. Hardcore Benefits - Now, obviously there should be some added bonus to playing on a much more rigorous experience right? I believe that all reputation rewards should be doubled, as well as all gold rewards.

    Thoughts?

  • I'm down for most if not all of these.

#2 - I would suggest even death wouldn't get you back to your ship. Would be too easy to just drown, ferry, boom...you're back on your ship.

#8 - I demand outright. Even if the others were to not make it into this hardcore mode, I want CBalls to damage e'rbody. Boarding tactics would change dramatically as you would have to hold fire while your crew boarded the enemy ship or fire accurately to avoid hurting your boarder.

All of these give me goosebumps just thinking about how intense this would be.

  • I mean if you want to go the full mile, death should be permenant. You should be forced to create a new character every time you die.

This would make titles and reputation extremely valuble, maybe a leaderboard or something could be added to this mode.

I can just imagine sailing and then seeing certain sails on the horizon or something and knowing that a dangerous crew was approaching. Anyways, all of these ideas are awesome and I would love to see this mode make it in.

  • I usually like hardcore models (🤭), but the setup you provide just seems really unfun, and that should never be what you strive for.

  • 1992 is that way points in silver chair

  • Sign me up for everything except the spyglass glint removal.

  • @geoffman72 - Perhaps lowering the glint of it just a bit then? I just feel that it's too bright honestly.
I wouldn't mind it being left in if they just made it a bit less dramatic.
    That's just me though.

  • @davy-wood-beard
The game is meant to be split within the same mode. For instance, the Devil's Roar was intended as the 'hardcore' mode (with double rewards, too). Solo play is regarded as another hard mode for the game. The issue I see with your idea is that it splits the community up by servers, and there's enough of those things going on with PvE servers, crossplay, and ship size based servers all being discussed topics. I do think that the majority of your ideas would work for a hard mode, though, or perhaps a single crew story mode.

  • @davy-wood-beard as much as i love the idea of hardcore mode, splitting the playerbase isnt a good idea

  • @beenders33 sagte in Hardcore Mode:

That permadeath would destroy the whole purpose of your ship...your ship is your "base", your spawnpoint

  • @geoffman72 There already is no spyglass glint, glint only applies for snipers

  • I like the ideas for hard mode. Sign me up for that and beenders33's idea of one life.
It would be a beastly game but it would be a blast.

  • @ultmateragnarok @D4m0R3d - That's true, splitting the player base would definitely affect the game in a very negative way...
Which is unfortunate, I wish more people would play SoT.

Still, fun to think of ideas like this though, I enjoy talking about this sort of thing.
