E3 So far, thoughts on SoT, what do we hope for the future?

  • Well, E3 is nearly over and all that remains are a few random conference bits, and Nintendo god bless their souls. Some of the major highlights FOR ME were as follows, though the list isn't nearly as exhaustive as it could be - it's a start.

Obvious if only to me, Xbox and Bethesda had the most promising shows so far - IMO. Some of the Panels actually disagree with that statement, but of everything that has been offered the most promising really seems to stem from the Xbox camp and Bethesda camps with few outliers. Even if you aren't thrilled by the offerings, they had the most meat IMO, with little competition.

So far most of the games, universally, were thinner offering this year than we might have hoped. From every company... But there were exceptions as I am sure many fans of various IP's are thrilled at any news for their favorite games. Properties such as Forza, Battlefield, Kingdom Hearts, Cyberpunk, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, The Walking Dead Telltale, The Division 2 and so many more getting updates all but implies that many players will be happy.

Personally, I am most stoked for Fallout 76, Cyberpunk 2077, the years end for Sea of Thieves, Two Point Hospital, The Division 2, and yes even still others.

But it's not just games that excited me, Microsoft continues to stand by game pass and further details their acquisitions, and plans to acquire even more developers under the aegis of it's studio banner. This is good for MS gamers, it really is! Even if you hate the devil Microsoft and all it's done recently with the perceived low initial content offering that Sea of Thieves started as and the bug laden monstrosity of errors that was State of Decay 2... you likely have to admit that the idea of your favorite full value titles continuing to be applied to the service that is game pass is a good thing. Knowing we will continue to receive top notch games from some of our favorite industry leaders without having to drop a random $60 every time a new title launches, is frankly, astounding to me. Though a $10 subscription service might be a thorn in some gamers sides (Though for now the first month is only $1) - like Netflix or Hulu for me... I don't even notice it once I account it into my monthly bills... I just skip a steak dinner or a couple of Starbucks coffees for myself a month and remain content...

Which brings us to my favorite game pass offering, Sea of thieves.

Let's face it, the initial launch garnered alot of negative feedback. Even if the overall reception was good, and reported numbers look strong (Granted 4-5 million players compared to the 35 million other games receive may not be 'strong' in some books), we still have to admit that launch left alot of first timers and even those who've remained since launch a bit... shall we say filled with brine and salt water.

But we have endured! And if the numbers presented during the conference are an indication we also persevere! Hungering deep may also have left people... wanting more... but again more is coming!

With the two most recently teased offerings on the way through the year what are the thoughts of the player base here on these forums? Will Sea of Thieves finally offer enough by years end to silence the complainers (Likely nothing will, lol)? Is the realization that Game Pass, which many who access SoT use, is only going to continue to grow as exciting for you as it is me? Is there a favorite title you are longing for that was presented at E3? Will SoT continue to retain your interest once September Ends? I guess my overall question is to ask that since E3 is mostly coming to an end, at least as far as major announcements are regarded, how do you feel about the upcoming year in gaming? What might you hope to see revealed from the Nintendo camp as well (since we've yet to see their offerings at the show)? And of those thoughts, what opinions do you have regarding SoT itself?

I honestly feel like its not that great for us gamers right now. So tired of seeing the same games over and over. Time to play GoW part 15......
That is exactly why i like SoT. It was new and refreshing. And from that trailer they dropped, im seeing nothing but good things in this games future.

  • I started way back when and grew up in games on the consoles. After highschool I got hooked into Everquest on the PC and only when back to consoles for games such as Halo and a few others.

Seeing E3, I've felt a strong resurgence of console love and all that games that I can play on them. This Xbox Game Pass is a beautiful thing and so looking forward to all the titles I get to try over the next year with it.

  • @blooddoll22 Don't get me wrong, I was absolutely stoked when I saw the Cursed Sails/Forsaken Shores trailer....

But when I saw the Elder Scrolls 6 announcement, I had to change my pants...

  • @nwo-azcrack I admit as well, this was less of an awesome conference than I hoped it would be. I think that is where my bias towards Ms and Bethesda is born, their offerings superficially felt as if they offered the 'most meat'. There were IP updates, discussions about game pass (though play anywhere was not mentioned once I think, to my surprise), obviously game teasers, and hell we even got Andrew W.K. for all that was worth to video viewers.

Most the rest of the show was little more than a live stream of commercials, which is fine in it's way, but I hoped for more business updates and hoped to hear more from Sony regarding their PSNow and other services etc..

I was watching the trailers for Captain Spirit and then continued to watch the varied offerings such as The Division 2 and I realized so many games are just that now... a well decorated shooter... even games that are based on one shot stories such as Tomb Raider are really little more than a hero's journey decorated with either of Stealth, Combat, or grit lately.

But then there's Captain Spirit. Emotive storytelling promises that are framed around some similar tropes I am sure, yet seems to tackle issues that are actually relevant in our actual world... the idea of a lost loved one, coping with the aftermath of that, emotional isolation, imagination, and so on....

I wonder if we need more games that narrate relative human experiences and less games that target myopic issues of violence, rage, or similar.

SoT definitely tries to offer more via a sense of exploration and interaction, but even SoT falls into the category of nothing really all that new to audiences.

I wonder if the perceived lack at this years E3 has something to do with the fact that this years games were all highlighted in 2017 and we're in a quiet lull in the market for now as major devs finish up projects we've already known about such as...

    Red Dead Redemption etc..

  • @blooddoll22
I think im most excited for Anthem. Anything to get the bad taste of Bungie and the Destiny franchise out of my mouth

  • @xcalypt0x Yea I can't wait but admit it's far enough in the distance that I can't get hyped "yet". This is actually the case for most of the confernece... 2019, 2019, 2019.... and Elder Scrolls 6 is even sadder... 20XX lol.

@NWO-Azcrack I'm not a fan of either Bungie or Destiny in the least anymore... halo was fun for a bit... but that franchise never stuck to me like it 'should have'. I admit though I might dig around FarCry 5 soon simply as a matter of finally caving in and going for it.... I just can't "do" those "I wear a space suit, shoot things" games anymore... something about that games imagery just annoys me.

Speaking of imagery... though I appreciate SoT art style.. let's not fail to admit that Skull and Bones is visually appealing as it gets, even if the myopic PvP focus isn't my groove.

  • @blooddoll22 Yeah that's the unfortunate part :/ But last night I reinstalled Morrowind, Oblivian, Skyrim, and ESO so that I can prep myself :D

I had just recently done a complete refresh of my PC and hand't gotten around to reinstalling them yet (I'm a heathen). Just hit pirate legend too so I can slow down and play some other games now once I have completed the weekly events lol :)

  • @blooddoll22
I absolutely HATE Bungie. They ruined halo then passed it on to a company who ruined it even more. After the mess of Destiny 1. And the total step back that is Destiny 2 i am done with that company. I will never buy another game from them again.
I didnt actually pay for Destiny 2, because of distrust. Played it for a week, because a friend let me borrow it. And im glad they didnt get my money

  • I made a drinking game out of it when watching the E3 live stream (with friends).
One for every shooter and every post-apocalyptic zombie [Self edit] …

I won, 'cause I can still remember.

  • @nwo-azcrack Yea, seems we're of the same mind on that!

@xCALYPT0x Trust me.. I'm trying to decide if I want to finally buy The Division which I avoided like the plague during it's launch.... because it just did not have what I wanted. I mean c'mon... I've played a zillion shooter based games this one didn't look any different.

But, the sequel, something about the reveal that I watched FINALLY inspired me to give a damn. I think it was a credit to the way it was presented this time, a co-operative and intelligent (scripted obviously but let's ignore that for now) squad engaging with enemies in a dramatic way and not just a bunch of morons hopping around charge into the fray like mad men struck me... this time.

It's a gun play based game... I'm sure I'll regret my interest, but at least for now, I'm excited.

Kingdom Hearts 3 .... my whole living room lit up as we watched that reveal!

Wonder how Fallout 76 will be ruined by the introduction of online play? My daughter and I thrive on story based games, good narratives, companion collection (Or in my case, building an NPC party). The Dragon Age series, Fallout 4, Mass Effect, and stuff like that always capture my attention... but it's obvious that one shot stories are NOT my interest anymore... I own God of War the most recent PS4 game I've bought for that matter... and I STILL haven't played it! And I am a HUUUUUUUGE fan of both that franchise and the setting it's taking place in... yet I haven't touched it once....

Clearly I enjoy communities and online gaming, 76 is offering that at least in part... will it be bad news for fallout?

  • @blooddoll22 I'm looking forward to Nintendo's conference. I'll post my reaction to it to that other e3 thread. ;)

  • @ant-heuser-kush Yea, I haven't watched the alternative outlets for SoT lately... in fact it's been like 3 days since I've played SoT... odd...

    I can't believe I forgot..

    BATTLETOADS!

@Sir-Lotus Yea, this thread was 'supposed' to go in another direction... but well yea lol

  • @blooddoll22, https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/59737/proposal-governor-fort This is what i'm hoping for in the future :p

  • I did not get excited about much from this years E3. Microsofts exclusives were rather disappointing. I liked the Gears of War trailer but I am not really a big fan of the franchise and its hard to get excited about what will likely be just another short 6 hour campaign. Halo is no longer a must have for me either so I did not feel pumped about that.

The Sea of Thieves trailer was OK. Again, would have loved to see some actual gameplay but I am excited for the new area and the new ship. I feel indifferent about the rowboat. Not sure what else is actually confirmed at the moment. I can't wait until they start incorporating more stuff from the Art of Sea of Thieves book, if they ever do. I am not sure if they will be able to keep me interested once September ends. I currently average playing SoT about once a week for 2-3 hours but it could go up depending on the weekly events.

Cyberpunk 2077 seems like it will be interesting but I would have loved to see some actual gameplay from it. Same with Starfield from Bethesda. I am interested to get more information on the Elder Scrolls rather than just a teaser.

Ghost of Tsushima looked beautiful. I fell in love with that fight scene at the end. Gameplay looks pretty standard.

I am not sure what to think about Death Stranding. There was a lot of running in that trailer.

As far as how I feel about the upcoming year in gaming? I am not really sure. I am not all that excited but I am also not completely disappointed. I am super excited for Red Dead 2 coming at the end of the year but multiplayer has me worried that it will just be a clone of GTA MP which I was not a fan of.

  • @blooddoll22 Nearly over? Today is the actual official start of E3.
All the announcements on the weekend were basically the same thing as stores doing Black Friday sales a week early.

I don't think Rare has even had their interviews or official stage time. All we saw is what Microsoft thew together on Sunday for the big mashup of all the games.
