A 'Dead Man's Switch' approach to AFK-leeches

  • The current idle detection is useless since it only looks for a lack of input over a period of time, which is easy to circumvent simply by placing an object on a key, or by placing a band or resting a controller in a way which continually outputs a joystick direction. Personally, I don't want to quit out of a game to prevent my work benefiting an idle player, particularly if I've accrued a healthy stash of supplies.

Rare seems quite pleased with their idea of the brig over a vote-to-kick, so if a kick feature is not going to be added, then an alternative solution needs to be found, perhaps there ought to be a 'dead man's switch' system for players who have been banished to the brig. After spending a predetermined amount of time in the brig, and periodically thereafter, players should be prompted to enter a random combination of keys in order to verify their presence, or have a selection in the pause menu that says: 'I'm here' that is active and must be selected when the prompt is given.

  • Once the private crews are added something like this won't be necessary as you'll only be brigging your friends for the lulz. At that point rando crews will be for the truely adventurous and you should know what you're signing up for when joining.
