Please, please, Please! Fix the respawn system!

  • The respawn system heavily needs to be reworked before release. It really discourages combat in a game.. that's about ship Combat! In my opinion.

You fight another crew. Kill them, and before you can take their treasure, they just respawn right on their ship. This process can go back and forth for quite a long time.

And say you are really successful and able to sink their ship, they will just respawn in the water near your ship, which means they can still board your ship and mess with you. Or vice versa and the other crew can just camp the mermaid and kill them every time they try to get their new ship.

And if they do get a new ship, the ship itself respawn way too close to where it sank. Any adept crew will easily be able to catch up to the other crew and battle ensues again. This can lead to a lot of griefing and nonsense combat.

It truly truly discourages combat in my opinion.

Now, I won't just complain without offering any solutions. If a member dies, instead of having them respawn on the ship have them respawn in the water quite a ways away. Or, if you really want them back on the ship, while they are dead maybe amother crew member can do a 10sec ritual or something below deck talking to a parrot to allow ship respawn for the next person. This will allow ship respawns after combat, but not necessarily during.

And have sunken ships respawn much MUCH further away. As well as maybe have a few mermaids scattered around to respawn ships so the other crew can't camp it.

    Any thoughts?

  • Spawn mechanics definitely need adjustment. Spawn invincibility, random spawn points on the ship, longer wait time for mermaids (when falling off the ship, not when ship sinks), and probably a few more changes would be really nice. The moment a ship starts sinking, there should be 0 chance of someone respawning on the ship or in the water as its sinking too.

  • The only part or the respawn system I dont like is when your ship has been sunk... you are being camped at your mermaid. They just sit there and try to kill you over and over and not let you get to your mermaid and back into a ship. As for respawning back on their ship... its their ship so why wouldnt they. If you board someone elses ship then obviously be ready to fight or dont get on it and then complain that is where they spawn. Then the trolls use the "we are just being pirates" as their excuse of being trolls.

  • This heavily discourages PVP for smaller crews. As a solo I sunk a gallon and made off with 10 chests. Naturally they were angry and after I cashed them in i was chased.

Well I sunk them again, only this time I anchored and after killing their crew 3-5 times post ship sinking I never had enough time to raise anchor. Thry constantly spawned in the water right next to me. Eventually was killed and boarded and they proceeded to spawn camp my boat, drive it into rocks and put my 2 chests on an island.

Luckily I spawned right in view of the island but as I arrive 2 of them were camping the island for going on 45 minutes. Killing them still did nothing as the spawned on the island with full ammo as well.

So I, as a solo player realised even if I have better aim, do everything better, there's nothing I can do in this system against a crew determined to ruin the game.

  • I agree. The current respawn system just makes the battles endless and nonsensical. I might suggest there be a higher time to kill (which maybe decreases a bit when you board an enemy ship) so that the person to person battles lasts a bit longer, but when you die, maybe you respawn on another island with the rest of your fallen crew and have to be picked back up, or maybe just stay dead longer. That way if you wipe another crew out, spoils go to the victor, end of story. Maybe if you die you have to stay dead until your whole crew either wins or loses? Or you could just have a much longer respawn period... Regardless, right now it sucks and is ruining an otherwise spectacular game. I love everything about it but the rapid respawns that lead to endless, stupid, ridiculous battles...

  • @bambam-bm Hey mate,

Yes I've been banging on this drum from day one.
I've had a few ideas on this and what I think would work and make for more a tactical game is to use a system like this.

    • At an Outpost you are able to buy Spawns, (I saw someone call them souls and I like that)

    • This allows for more gold to be used for more then making things look pretty.

    • All so allows the game to have a risk to reward for combat.

    • Once on a ship and say someone falls overboard, the merman is free and encourages little to no team work on going back for the player overboard. So now if someone wants to use the merman it's going to cost them a soul, do you risk a respawn for later for ease or do you turn around and look for your player?

    • In combat and you get killed you now only have as many souls as you have saved up, once out of souls your ship is gone and the other team has a bit of time to collect their spoils.

And if you are all out of souls then you respawn back at a new ship somewhere safe,
If you happen to fall overboard and not have souls then you should have the option to spawn close to the ship or back at a new ship.

I'm sure people will like the easy free option to the spawning in, but their is a lot of players that would like to add some risk to the combat that only a limited respwan system offers.

  • @fonzaye I know you've put thought into that idea, but I really don't think the 'buy respawns' idea will ever catch. It's a little odd to be honest in light of the alternatives.

@ithinkmaybe It's not the players ruining the game, it's an issue with the game's design.

Of the many greviances posted on this forum i'd estimate around 40-50% are direct results of this issue with the spawning. I support anyone who raises such concerns. We're 25 days from release, not an immense time in terms of game development, and I feel this alteration should have been made by now (increased ship respawn distance). A lot of playtesting has been done but all of it involves this poor respawning system. If it were still in the game on release, I would have massive concerns about the games development.

I wouldn't call it game breaking, but rather concept breaking. Hopefully news will soon come of RARE's decision to alter the system.

  • @ithinkmaybe Yes you win the but lose the war.

  • @inbred-chimera Pay or not pay for the souls the limited spawning is still a workable idea that would add to the gameplay.

  • @shaggiedo Oh I won the war, I found the chests they stole and hid on the island and hid them again, came back and got them later. But it still was grueling and not fun or fair in anyway.

A new player would have given up long ago and left the game.

But I was determined to embarrass the 4 man gallon I had stolen from and sank twice.

  • @ithinkmaybe Excellent.

  • Change death system to Down But Not Out style.

If you have teammates alive you are downed until revived. When the last member of the group dies, the entire group goes to the ferry together. I think the death timer should be longer too, at least 1 minute lounger imo. Make sure the revive animation is long so people have to choose between rezing or fixing that hole in the boat

  • I am hoping the current system is in place purely for testing the game in Beta. I hope the spawn system is slightly better on release.

My hopes are not far from where we are now. Death spawns are on the ship whilst the ship is afloat to simulate a larger crew but once the ship is destroyed you auto spawn on an island with a new ship at least 5 minutes sailing away (in favourable wind).

On ship re spawns need to be random but below deck and the white screen needs to be quicker. I was killed whilst in the white screen last night.

  • Agree. I LOVE this game and honestly will play either way, but I can speak as someone who has both been "griefed" and done the griefing at the loser's mermaid and on the victor's ship, this is broken.

Sinking an opposing ship should always be a victory, because against a skilled crew it can be hard. Them attacking from the water makes perfect sense and defending their treasure and all that, but their mermaid should not spawn near their wreck and once they die without a ship around, they should spawn somewhere else (at least two grids away, imo). Hopefully, this is the case already for launch. Keep up the great work!
