Boat durability/repair limit

  • It could be interesting to limit the number of time we can repair our ship with wood on water.

Per example, if your boat have been hit 30(random number) times, and you have repair it 30 times with wood. The boat will become unrepairable by hand. So all new shot will make permanent damage. On the other hand, you could «reset» this 30 limit, when stop at an outpost and go see the «boat mechanic» who can repair your boat ( free or in exchange of some gold ).

If this is consider to big as change, maybe instead of damage be permanent after 30 hits, the repair made is less effective. Example :
1-30 hits : Wood plank seal 100% of the hole
    31- 60 hits : Wood plank seal 80%, etc...

And if the water is the problem, maybe we can just make the boat maneuverability be less good after a number of repair ?

My point is to make damage management a little more realistic. I can understand my idea can slow down the battle, and made it weird to have to go at outpost before ending a combat, but at opposite, if you attack a boat non-stop, you could expect that the boat will become worn, and not only visually.

    What do you think ?

  • Yeah, i think they need to find a way to shorten the duration of galleon vs galleon fights, with two experimented crews, they can last forever, until one of both doesn't have ressources anymore, and that's not even true because you can always shoot a crewmate from a canon to the closest island (and quick come back with the siren).

Some sort of durability would be a good way, and it would give another reason to stop by outposts.

  • I’d like to see sail/rigging and rudder damage with variable repair durations and materials. Would definitely keep things more interesting and could inspire new attack strategies other than just aiming for the waterline. Sloops would also have more attack options.

  • When the ship has repaired holes, and it gets struck by a cannon ball, it doesn't just make a new hole does it? I thought it also knocks off planks from previous holes. Thus making it much harder to repair, the more damaged you are.

  • @fullmetaljakee I'm not sure if it makes it harder to repair but I do believe that there should be some sort of difference if they do shoot the same hole 2 or 3 times. Like maybe the hole gets bigger and water comes in twice as fast, if you hit the same spot 4-5 times the water comes in 3 times as fast. At its current state large ship battles are basically won by whoever has the most resources to keep their ship afloat. Which is real easy I might add because if one ship has 45 wood planks, all you have to do is leave one person in the lower deck to repair the entire time.

    What I was saying is:
When ships get hit by Cannon balls, I'm sure planks that we're covering previous holes get knocked off also, so say when a ship first gets hit by a Cannon ball, it gets one hole..then it gets hit by another and it gets a second hole, and let's say these holes are next to one another. A crew member comes and puts planks over both of the holes, then another Cannon ball flys in and hits right next to them, it creates another hole but also knocks off the other two planks. Eventually the more holes that you have repaired, the more they will keep getting knocked off till eventually it'll be too overwhelming and the ship will sink.

From my experience this is how the system works, I may be wrong but I'm sure planks get knocked off also. If there are two good crews against one another, that are hitting their mark constantly, a ship will go down pretty fast.

Edit: Just to add, I'm not saying All planks get knocked off when a Cannon ball hits, just ones within a certain area.
