Ideas to defend against people who chase you.

  • It's happened to a lot of us. It ALWAYS happens to me when I have taken a sleeping pill and say "I'm going to do a quick missions before bed." Last night was 2 hours. If you're a decent helmsman, they never even get close to you, but they make it impossible to turn your chickens in. They will drop a guy off on the outpost you have to go to (They always know for some reason) and then you set in for the long chase, hoping to throw them off enough. But like last night with me, they even fended off a Kraken before returning to the chase. They just did not get the hint that they were never going to catch us. But what can we do against these type of people?

Many of us have learned HOW to keep them at bay, by sailing into the wind and going through rocks and close to Islands and keeping their canons out of range or out of use. But what else can we do? We can't do the drop method because if they have people on the Island outpost camping they will just kill you and catch your ship if you're solo.

This thread is for discussion on how to defeat these annoying, immature, chasers and strategies to turn a 2 hour chase into a much shorter one.

This discussion is NOT for speculation on game mechanics in the future and only how to do it with what we have.

I advise anyone who is truly interesting in discussing this to completely ignore the trolls who enter to cause controversy.

  • The most obvious was is if you don't really have that much stuff on board, just sail your ship off the map and never left them get anything of yours. But this is something wrong with the game. Sociopaths LOVE to force people to ruin their nights. They will then use this against good people by chasing them just to get them to run off the map.

  • @edemardil

    Just scuttle and/or change servers.

If your idea of 'winning' is the most coin/hr, the chase is a waste....... just like in WoW how players would gain more reward/hr losing fast instead of winning slow.

If your idea of 'winning' is the most kills/hr, the scuttle option doesn't work for you.

  • The best way I have found to really turn the tides on these annoying chases is to just git gud.

  • This is why I say we need Frontal Cannons.

Its simply too easy to run.

I went and made a sandwhich , and our buddy took a shower while running once.

And when we were both back, we turned and fought and one. But the point we were making was, we dont have to try to run away forever.

We did have about 8 k worth or more. but running forever is not how you play the game.

Pirates would fire weapon s through sails and all to try and slow ships down.

The runners can hop off and try and mess with the chaser with out risk.
Chasers take one risk at all as is, (turning to hop they get that shot that lands a crew man on the boat and miss) and they lose them for good

I get that. It's just that when you spent the gold to buy the mission, have a goal in your mind for the night (like I did) and get everything together and only have 2 hours to play, its annoying to have to be chased around with nothing but empty chicken crates on board.

But in this game you don't get anything for killing people. Especially if they have nothing on board. But people still do it. These guys wanted to kill us for no reason. They didn't even take anything after sinking us. We sold everything. I don't even PvP in this game so I'm not worried about fighting or killing. I let people kill me all the time trying to be friendly to them. I don't care about that. It's not about the money even. It's about the most valuable of riches: time.

  • drop a powder keg behind you and wave goodbye

  • If you're being chased you have every advantage. You can dictate where and when the fights happen, you can drive-by turn-in, you can attempt to board the chaser. It's almost impossible to win as an aggressor against someone that is running.

As for OP, if you choose to just run for hours and take the I hope they get bored approach, that's on you. @Edemardil

Please read the OP, this is not about how to change the game, it's about how to deal with the current situation with what we have. I appreciate your input though. Thanks.

What if I'm not a pirate? What if I like doing Merchant missions and stealing pigs from Islands and treasure from shipwrecks? I'm steal a thief. Doesn't meant I HAVE to PvP. I avoid it because I don't like the combat system in this game. The other night some outpost campers tried to rob me. I just jumped while they shot at me, back and forth, several times selling all my stuff. The PvP is weak. I'd rather hit shipwrecks and every island selling kegs and free chests for gold.

It's amazing to me that you spent 2 hours staying up past your bedtime running away from a fight to save a chicken.

The problem for me with this is 1. I never end up hitting them. 2. This shows that I want to engage and I do not want to. I want them to go the hell away. lol

Cant do drive bys when they leave people on the Islands. Last night every outpost I went to (3) had someone waiting. When you HAVE to turn in Merchant missions on that Island, you're screwed.

I know it's on me. It has worked and hasn't worked. I've never been caught yet, but it's still annoying. Thakns for the input.

Good one! This seems to work also. Last night though, they literally fought off the Kraken in the middle of the chase and still kept coming haha.

I don't have a bed time, but sleeping meds sure do make me unhappy to be chased. I am just as amazed, trust me. lol

  • @edemardil the storm are easy, go around them. The waves do not appear unless you are that close to them.. right? so you just go around the storm so you can see what direction they turn in. meanwhile, they cant see you. so chances are even greater they turn towards you.
    Easy Peazy...

    TURN AND FIGHT
I never run from a fight unless its to prove that I can make a sandwhich whilst doing so.. and I did. so easy to run

See my earlier comment about fighting. If not: I hate fighting unless I have to and when I have a friend who sucks at the game on board with me, I'm basically flying solo and what will I do against a crew that just beat the Kraken in front of me? I'm not the best at PvP in this game but I can sail the ship through two trees 1 meter apart with a monkey hanging in the branches.

"Why fight when you can run?"

  • @edemardil because you may have to run for 2 hours? and is your time precious?
Or do you not appreciate yourself that much?

the deal is, the guys chasing you dont know what you have, but you seem to think that whatever you have is worth running for. So they want it more.

but your time should be worth fighting for.....

  • You can always just give up. Think about it, they do it to either grief you or because you have something of value. So give up and they will most likely stop.

You can also drop gunpowder during a chase and you can also set your ship straight, jump off and board them if they are following you directly, make sure to drop anchor.

  • @jdge439
If a ship goes into a storm and busts a few sharp turns. You can easily lose people.

  • @barnacle-blake not if you dont enter the storm, the big tall waves dont render for you.. Just stay on the circumference of the storm, and you can watch the other ship zig zag about, and they may end up coming out and at you.

Thats a decent point. But in that case, im sending the ship off the map. Then no one gets it.

  • @edemardil honestly if I'm solo, I try not to carry too much loot at once. My strategy for chases is if I've noticed someone's chasing me I head for the nearest Outpost in the opposite direction and only focus on turning in the valuable stuff.

  • The chasers are not necessarily immature if they are able to utilise reasoning perfectly and happen to utilise the environment to their advantage as well.

Those who are immature, however, there's very little you can do.

What I find most useful is to just reason with your crew about what to do, evaluate the value of the on board loot again in relation to your current goals and then make choices to avoid wasting time, if efficiency is the most important thing to you. Just remember:

    One's food is another's poison.

  • @jdge439 Never noticed/heard this before.

Ill take take a closer look next storm im by but seems far fetched.

Since some storms are huge and a sloop can go right in and turn hard to opposite edge that other guys are circling on. Ill Give it a try though and see how it works.

  • I play solo when my friends are not around, because I don't like relying on randoms. I have never been chased by a galleon, ever. When I am solo, I simply adjust to make sure I take a few extra seconds to really look around before I do something. You can see ships far enough away that they realistically can not catch you, the hard part is just to see them in time.

  • The best thing to do is just drive off the map while waving goodbye. Then they get nothing. Not even the satisfaction of shooting at you. Just a boring 5 mph sailboat chase.

  • @flowerofcarnage which again, states that your time and what you have is not worth fighting for.

  • Good post.
I dont thing it is possible
To drop people on every outpost.
Agains these kindda player, that have the only goal of being anoying, theres a limited moves you cand do as told here.

Drop stuff- spyglass and wait till de best island
Go outside the map( id never do that)
    Storm (good move)
    Between rocks a d islands
Or, the best way to me: get on a fight
If you loose your stuff, deal with that, this is part of the game!
I already got pirated, i know its a hard thing but this is what it ment to be.
Beeing out of the point now, this is why new spawn is a bad thing. Against people
Like this you are scrwed, how could you get your loot back if you spawn on the other side of the map.

Im high rep in Merchants. My mission was 5 chickens and I found three crates and a skull on the first Island I checked. They were at the out post I needed to go to. We ended up getting the last two chickens for e mission while they killed the Kraken and they chased us again. We did eventually get enough space between to turn everything in except two chickens they killed with canons. Im not a newb, Im just not great at fighting in this game. Thus is also a post for anyone having the trouble. Im not alone and there are some genuine strategies to losing a pursuer. Good points though. It sucks to sacrifice but sometimes you gotta do it.

Im fine solo. I get chased often. Solo this stuff diesnt happen, it when im playing with a friend who isnt very good at the game. But sometimes you come around an Island and a ship is there. Sometimes you are upwind and a Galleon three islands away can catch up fast.

I tried it last night and the followed us until I said, ok lets try to go back. We were taking ship damage. They just turned right back toward us.

  • @edemardil My idea is they need a life if you chase me and my friend for 30 minutes and you still haven’t caught us here’s a hint, you’re not going to. Also there’s a rock right there sorry you can’t make the turn but we can have fun patching up those holes.

In two hours, I can make 20k. It benefits no one to chase someone for two hours for 2k worth of chickens.
If you chase someone for more than 20 minutes and arent making any ground on them, youre immature. Go hit a shipwreck and make up the mney that way. The issue is that people are sociopaths and games like this give them an opening to act on their urges. It takes a special kind of person to think that trying to rob someone who can just sail off the map is more productive than, doing a mission instead.
