It's the little things... that make SoT seem rushed.

  • I'm a stickler for details. And I can't help but notice a lot of little details that make me feel SoT was indeed rushed out the door.

For example (but I'm sure not exhaustive):

    • The 'Royal Sovereign Jackets' with an 's'. Instead of the singular Jacket.
    • Scurvy Isley - Isley isn't a word. Is this supposed to be Isle?
    • The figureheads seem to basically change colour, rather than be anything different when upgraded. This isn't so much a lack of attention to detail, but strikes of laziness. I mean, the golden lion figurehead only changes the eye colour...
    • There's no way to unequip an item in the clothing chest. Once equipped, you either need to equip something else in it's place or unequip everything. E.g. a belt - don't want it? Take off everything.
    • Some NPC's require a Y button press to talk to, others require an X. Handing in items to quest givers is X, but speaking to them is Y. Speaking to the Tavern owner is Y, but speaking to shop keepers is X....?
    • Moving along pages of shop items when talking to a shop keeper is done using the triggers... but when perusing your own inventory in the chests it uses the bumper...?
    • No way to view cosmetic items on your pirate before buying, a pretty basic quality of life mechanic...

    I could go on.

Again, these are minor but reflect a sense of rushedness and lack of time to polish.

Still adore the foundation of the game though and can't wait to see it build.

  • @lewanderous If you go to the belt tab in the clothing chest, you can unequip just the belt.

  • Yep. Hence my anger at such a high grade developers doing such sloppy work. The game might score a generous 3/10 rating for quality of life. I also hate the 'switch to item to store it' deal with barrels. The fact that between changing weapons and picking up ammo, the game will assume you want to change weapon before assuming you want ammo.

Realisticly i'm obviously going to take a second to focus on changing weapon, whereas i'd rather just sweep up some ammo.

Also the way ships render on the horizon. They are far more distinct than equally solid objects such as trees and rocks. Could arue its a design choice, but I don't feel like it is.

I noticed this as well and it bothers me, they stand out against everything else, they contrast the environments. It's like they have some artificial outline around them that just sticks out.

Amen. Tired of people defending blatant laziness and lack of Quality Control.

  • Just 2-3 things:

Scurvy Isley - Isley isn't a word. Is this supposed to be Isle?

Like "Matey", and yet it seems to be quite common in the way of speaking that we give to pirates (in fictions at least).

I mean, the golden lion figurehead only changes the eye colour...

Actually no, look again. The first one is more like yellow painted, while the second one is shiny gold with reflections. It's still a mere color/texture swap, but not limited to the eyes only at least.

There's no way to unequip an item in the clothing chest. Once equipped, you either need to equip something else in it's place or unequip everything. E.g. a belt - don't want it? Take off everything.

You can, just go in the specific clothing tab so you can select colthes of the same type, or unequip only this one.

  • @nyadc85 It make pirate - like behaivour like ambushed early impossile. Just spin in the crows nest and look for blakc shadows sticking out. Granted at great distance it can be tough, but even at long range the shadows are distinct.

Another thing I just thought of is the lights... sometimes they just have no other function but to give away your position. I'd like to see a thick fog in the game where you can either go dark and risk hitting land or light up to see but also be seen. As it stands light have no real function.

  • @inbred-chimera The level of detail rendering was added before beta to accommodate more system specs, yet it affects all settings. Sad I agree, but the reasoning.

  • @lewanderous
    This post seems rushed too.

now what? I for example am waiting for the promised DLC. What are you offering?

You seem to be confusing me with someone who works at RARE. Or is paid to offer anything.

  • @lewanderous

It would still be nice getting something though.

Okay. Have this video of a weird dog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvD8WcrdK5o

  • the moment you dive in the water and see no kraken body is the moment you know they were probably rushed to put this out, alpha/beta players kept saying there was no content but the naysayers were like "just waiiit there is going to be more" now they are probably scrambling and will probably make more mistakes.

  • I do agree, they definitely were rushed to get that game out, but the game was under development for several years maybe rushed is a bit odd.

Anyway missing content doesnt bother my as much as many small bugs, crashes and inconsistencies.

  • @inbred-chimera gun mechanics are garbage too. try shooting a gun mid-ads, or fire a zoomed snipe shot where you release the ads immediately after the bullet leaves the rifle.

  • @lonegoatknifer said in It's the little things... that make SoT seem rushed.:

Yeah, I figured this out eventually. Still lazy design, and shows that corners were cut to meet the deadline.

What amazes me is that, either they spent four years making five different cosmetic options and one ship (in two slightly different sizes), OR they're purposely holding back content so that they can release it as DLC later on. Either option is pretty lame.

The Kraken is particularly odd. I mean, they put in an unfinished version of it at release just so they could say that they added some stuff after the beta, but why not wait until it's actually done? This makes me wonder about the Legendary ship - my bet it that there isn't one, it's just another cosmetic option or two for the ship(s) we already have.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing SoT. But the lack of content, and the obvious scramble to cover it up, has me really worried. They said the beta was only part of the finished game, but it turned out to BE the entire game, unless you count a few cosmetics and another more or less identical line of fetch quests. I wonder if they tested this, and really though it would be enough to tide us over until they could get a content patch out, or of they were contractually obliged to release in March and just didn't plan properly for it?

  • @finanzminister said in It's the little things... that make SoT seem rushed.:

I think you could say it was rushed. Rare are obviously not very good at planning their time, and didn't manage to put in all the stuff they wanted in time for release, as evidenced by the half-finished Kraken they desperately threw in there to prove that this game has more content than the betas (which it doesn't).

Sure, the Galleon and Sloop are well designed and fun to use - even though they're essentially the same ship in slightly different sizes - and the islands look great, even though they're empty. But where's the meat? The epic quests for loot, the big events that force players to band together to survive?

What we have here is one of the greatest sandboxes in the history of gaming. I really, really hope that Rare intends to put some sand in.

  • I wish I could preview clothing items on my pirate before I buy them. This functionality is available in the equipment/vanity chests so not sure why its not available in the shops

  • @matzor yeah me too i really enjoy it, hopefully they get their horse back on track.

  • The devil is in the details I agree, but what about the bigger things.

Why no PVP faction, NPC merchant ships to raid on the sea (like real pirates did) a main town, bustling with people. And the countless other things people have already mentioned on the forums.

  • @matzor said in It's the little things... that make SoT seem rushed.:

Yeah, I figured this out eventually. Still lazy design, and shows that corners were cut to meet the deadline.

During all the tests you would just click the item to unequip it. If they added that back on top of what they have, it would be good.

What amazes me is that, either they spent four years making five different cosmetic options and one ship (in two slightly different sizes), OR they're purposely holding back content so that they can release it as DLC later on. Either option is pretty lame.

Unfortunately, they are just holding content back. Or it's locked behind something to where we don't know about it but, for most things, that's unlikely. If you look at all the promotional characters or even at the in game shops, there is a lot of gear we just don't have. I'm expecting item releases similar to how GTA gets cars. One every week.

  • Anyone who was in the alphas/betas could tell this game was being pushed out the door before it felt ready. On one hand Rare had 4 years and only came out with this much to do. On the other Microsoft probably pushed them to get a release version out so they could have a big name game at the forefront of their Xbox Game Pass.

  • Just a couple of things to add

When jumping onto the ships ladder (only play with Sloop, not sure about galleon) you go down the ladder and then back up even if you hold W to go up.
Resetting the striker on the flintlock pistol. If you fired without ADS then the striker does not move forward after firing however if you do ADS and fire then the striker goes forward to which you character pulls it back.

    I'm sure there is more.

  • Congrats people, yall bought a full price alpha.. I think ill hold off on buying for another 4 years, the game might finally move to beta by then lol

  • Who thought those voice actors were a good choice?! Not ONE classic cliche stereotypical pirate accent...I CAN DO ONE! Im brilliant at cliche awful accents, I assume they got people from the office to do the voice acting as most of their lines consist of " hm....oh....ahh.....ahuh! "

  • @chickabumpbump They are all people from RARE, as in, in-house.

  • @tumtumhero no one cares.

  • @jaduffman1

    Aka people in the office.

  • I dont think it should be ignored that MS are likely to be a cause of this. They released One X with naff all in exclusives to show it off and the hype around SoT was already big and building therefore an appropriate title, thus I fully suspect they have pushed this before its ready to try and cash in.

  • As a longtime game developer myself, I can understand the Kraken and don't think the community is being fair here. Games are always smoke and mirrors to some extent.

But here are my "wow, that's really rushed/sloppy craftsmanship" entries.

    Terrible

The "More" key for the radial inventory menu...

... Is HARDCODED to "F" on PC. What blatant laziness. This is alpha prototype kind of code quality.

No matter what your radial menu keys are, it's F to get to the second page.

The radial menu will also bring up the windows default cursor. If you move that out of your screen (multi screen systems), the game loses focus.

Keypad Enter and Return map to the same function, and can't be mapped independently. What gives?

The key mapping menu has different options IN THE GAME than it has in the MENUS. As in, all the options are there, except for example the Inventory hotkeys. You can only map these while playing.

The menu settings also frequently don't show the correct mapings.

No simple throwing of items. Just dropping. WoW generation MMO tech style. Wow.

No hit feedback on players - the pain twitch is so detached from the rest, as is the death animation... It's really hard to tell you killed someone until 750ms into their death animation.

The barrels. Just like Half Life's lazy crates, there is barrels everywhere.

Everything is static geometry. Is this 1998? When I shoot at a table, I expect at least the dishes to move.

The economy is out of whack, a bucket or a tankard costing thousands of gold pieces... Yeah right. Zero suspension of disbelief.

Rare spent two years on their ship asset, still the audio sources on the halyards get stuck every couple of minutes and keep playing their clicky squeaky pulley sounds.

AND DON'T GET ME STARTED on the ridiculous dialogue with the npcs. That's game jam level dialog quality.

At least during 4 years someone on the team could have realized that their "Sloop" is more of a Cog, and shouldn't be called Sloop without the fore-and-aft rigging that pretty much defines a sloop.
