PC user gamertag (problems) and character name

  • I had an Xbox 360 a long time ago. I lost interest in it and moved onto exclusively PC and PS4 gaming. I have since then created a Microsoft account under a newer email adresse which I have been using for work (Such as Word online, etc).

In order to purchase this game, I had to create an Xbox account and did not want this purchase or game to be tied in any way with my old forgotten email adresse. Thus began the creation of an Xbox account for a PC game (Weird, but I get it I guess, for the cross platform).

Xbox did this thing where it gives you a random gamertag which you can change. I was creating my character when it asked me to create it, and so my character is now called WOODEDDRAGOON46.

Look, I know, it's an awesome name. But I just need to know this:

    • I have changed my xbox name to my arguably lesser but still prefered name (as you can see by my forum name).
    • When I log into Sea of Thieves, my new name is shown on the top right.
    • When I join a server, my character in the Crew list is still WoodedDragoon46.

If I delete my character and start a new one, will it have my new name, or is it something I did wrong on the Xbox website? I don't mind deleting it, but I'd rather not do it if it won't work.

PS: If there's a way to link my old xbox account with achievements and such to my new one, please let me know!

PPS: God I Wish this game was on steam... But it's worth it (I keep repeating to myself frantically after trying to purchase the game for 45 minutes).

  • I hate that we can't pick an ingame name.
I've had my Microsoft account for around 10 years (Good old MSN times), at some point in time changed my name. Must have been years ago as well.
So if I want a different ingame name, I now have to pay 10$ to Microsoft?
    That's daylight robbery!

  • wait what, there isn't a naming character option?

  • @p5r3v1l man i just had to pay $10 to get rid of my my gamertag from a decade ago as well....literally 10 year old gamertag that they expect you to run with...ive already been on the phone with them to complain...and to add insult to injury the servers are STILL down and i cannot play this $75.00 full release game.

  • @flipperskate237 Nope, it just shows your gamertag. In the Reddit ama they said character naming is something they were considering adding, but wasn't easy to implement in their current system.

  • I just wanted to update this thread and say that: I deleted my character and started a new one and it did fix the naming issue!

  • @verminpup What the heck, man. I'm having the same problem. I deleted multiple characters, waited hours, but still it reverts to my old gamertag in-game.
