Where is the install directory for the Alpha?

  • I need to uninstall the alpha to make room for the beta, where is the directory that it installed to? I tried uninstalling using the Settings apps tab, but my disk space did not change, so the files are still on my hard disk and it looks like I need to delete them manually. I am on Windows 10.

UPDATE: I noticed that this post has been viewed 15.2k times, which tells me that a lot of people are having issues. For anyone reading this, scroll down to the posts by @ufotinik and @clarkalii they provide the info necessary to handle this problem.

  • @cows-n-muffins If you already installed the Technical Alpha, updating it should update it to be the Closed Beta. They are the same client.

I did all that, but my disk space did not change when I uninstalled the alpha. What is the actual path to the game files? I need to delete them manually because I do not have enough hard disk space to download 20 gigs needed for the beta.

It annoys me to no end that Windows 10 makes it this difficult to find out where something is actually located on my hard disk.

  • same here. I want to desinstall the game and the uninstall option doesn't work.
Where is the game on my C:/ ??

First time in 30 years of computer i can't find where a folder is ...

  • @ufotinik I hope you do not need to do what I did. I reinstalled my OS to free up the space. It's ridiculous that there are no answers on this anywhere I have searched. No one knows where this game installs to.

  • @cows-n-muffins This game put my svchost dowloading all day long with bad ping in other games...
It took me one hour to find the game and to get access to this special folder (never seen something THAT complicated to uninstall a game).... who is in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Wasserburg_1.73.9618.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
Unfortunatelly i can't delete it, even with unlocker, because APPVSC use it (it s the automatic updater for Microsoft Store).

I am completly stuck at this point ... looks like i will have to reinstall my OS, seriously in 2018 that sucks a lot ....

  • @ufotinik
Ok this is silly. @khaleesibot @OpticalMatrix sorry for pinging you guys from a random thread, but this seems important. Multiple people are having uninstall issues. Can someone look into this and provide a proper answer on how to uninstall SoT?

    This thread too:

  • @Deckhands I'm not the only crazy person with this issue. Halp :(

  • @cows-n-muffins Install and Uninstall issues will need to be directed towards Microsoft Support as it’s all run through the MS store itself and they will have the best information on how to help fix this issue.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Got, thanks.

  • @cows-n-muffins I found a workaround.
You must have access to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\ if you don't have check on internet on how to change the owner of a folder.

Then delete all folder called: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Wasserburg__**** using a tool like unlocker.
You will be stuck with one or two folder you can't delete.
Let svchost dowlonload the game automatically.
Then you can delete the game normally.

What happend to me is that windows store downloaded a new folder of the game with full install for EACH patch. That mean my SSD was completly full of multiple version of the game....

The game is great but i can't give a chance to something that took too much control on my computer like this ... Wish my post can help futur players ;)

  • @ufotinik Wow, that is way too much work to clean up your hard drive. Thanks for the instructions dude, I will give that a try later today.

All you have to do is give yourself permission. The main owner of the file / folder will be SYSTEM. You need to change that to your windows user name.

    1. Right-click the .pak file or whatever file/folder you are trying to delete. I'd recommend just deleting the .pak file. It is the main content file and will be like 15 gigs. It will be the huge file that CC cleaner finds after a disk analysis.

    2. Go to properties and then the Security Tab. Click Advanced.

    3. At the very top you will see that SYSTEM is the owner. Change that. In the white box, type in your windows user name. Now click "CHECK NAMES" button. It will auto fill your PC name and User name. APPLY THIS.
You will now get a warning that you need to close the properties box. Do that. Close the file. Close all dialog boxes.

    4. Now go back. Right-click the file. Go to properties. Security tab. Advanced.

    5. Now look at the Permission tab. Remove everything. If you get an inheritance warning, click Disable Inheritance. Now choose"Remove all inherited permissions from this object."

    6. Now add a permission! Select Principal. Add your user name again like above. Give yourself ALL permissions. You should now be in full control of the file and can do whatever with it.

  • Also, if you want to give yourself access to the WindowsApps folder, just do this.

Right-Click on Program Files. Do the same in the above post. Change the owner to your user name from TrustedInstaller. You should now be able to access WindowsApps' Security Tab. In the file explorer, manually type in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. It will let you access the Security Tab now.

Just change it back to NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller once you are done fiddling around.

Hey clarkalii, I just had the same problem after today's patch, I did what you listed, deleted the .pak file, all good.
But in order to gain access to the windowsapps security tab, I think I did a mistake with the program files permissions. I accessed them just like you said but then I deleted all the permissions just like you said in your first post (because you said "Do the same in the above post"). now after I changed the owner back to trustedinstaller, I get a ton of errors of some kind that I dont have permission, and if I want to access some folders in program files, I get errors saying I cant access them. something to do with inheritance?

  • @ufotinik @clarkalii I got it cleaned up with a combination of the info you guys provided. Also, I noticed that if you delete SOT using settings, it will sometimes not be deleted but instead move into the WindowsApps/Deleted folder. I have no idea why this happens, but I've had to manually delete the Deleted folder several times now to ensure that when I uninstall SOT it actually gets removed off my hard drive.

I am really starting to hate all WindowsApps, they are collectively a giant pain in the a*s to manage.

  • @ufotinik @clarkalii This problem persists to the live game. Hopefully this post helps those that need it.

  • Well yea... Problem "solved"

But well... i really want to ask what ... i am sorry.... KIND OF IDIOT was making this really cool game a f***ing Windows app ? O.o

You cant delete it normally, you can´t move it to another harddrive to get space....
You even can´t tell (for example) "Rocketdock" where the damn icons are.

    What a .... i can´t even give this a name....

a absolutly awesome game, but this is a thing.... that normally can´t be true....
    Horrible. What idiots....

Sorry, but pls, call the team that makes this game and first hit them hard and then give them a last chance to change this situation.... -.-

    :(
