[Suggestion] Spanish armada aka pirate police, and other related suggestions

  • In every pirate fantasy ive ever been a part of (this sentence makes sense if your into pirates as much as I am as an adult), theres always the sense that pirates operate on the fringes of civilized society, and in time law and order will catch up to the them. But in sea of thieves, pirates are the norm. And while im not completely against this idea of a pirate utopia where all manner of undesirable gentleman can roam free without fear of persecution, wouldnt it be cool to add a faction that represents the "status quo" of the universe? The spanish or english armada, the police so to speak, would go well with a lot of the popular suggestions, and it could be an expansion of the current merchants alliance.

One being be the raid boss type mega galleon people have wanted as a playable ship, that doesnt necessarily have to have 40 cannons, but you know, have so many that its broadside would make anyone quiver in their boots. Maybe in order ot implement it they would have to make it unboardable or something, and you could even toy with the idea of making it unsinkable, where it really is just about avoiding these monsters. It would act as the "police" whos constantly trying to catch you while you loot, smuggle and plunder stuff that dont belong to you. Would give merchant missions more pve elements.

The other obvious thing is the often suggested social hub outpost of nonviolence, since you know, where are the big serious ports in sea of thieves? In the city you would have to give up your cargo and give your ship to the vallet, and there you could interact with players and some variety of npc:s (this would prob need to be behind a loading screen). It would make the world feel so much more real and full, not the empty wasteland of skeletons it is now. Another reason is when im running merchant quests i dont feel like im a wealthy trader of exotic goods, i feel like im running weed, rags and booze to bums who live on deserted islands. Not that i dont love the thematic elements in that, but it would feel cool to start off from that and progress to someone who runs gold, silk and exotic spices from colonial outposts like kingston back to rich dudes in the motherland. Not very pirate like I know, but I think sea of thieves lore has room for people who want to be more like privateers or mercenaries. Which brings me to another related suggestion thats propably been here already but fits this theme:

Escort missions, where you have to protect a ship (or a convoy of them) running from one place to the next. This has probably been suggested but it fits in with the theme of working for civilized society. Obivously you could do it the other way around, where you have to rob a convoy. In that same vein more suggestions and random thoughts: I wanna be able to rob civilians at gun point. Not because I have a dark side, but because thats part of the pirate thing too. Npc ships that surrender under fire and let you board them and loot them would give an alternative to having to sink ships with as much firepower as possible. In that same vein: chainshots. The things that target masts and sails, possibly crippling or slowing down the ship instead of destroying the hull. This game needs more options for pursuing enemies. Right now against another player you cant really pursue them if they know which way the wind has to go for their ship to be faster. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, having options to avoid pvp in a game where it can happen at any time is important. But ship combat needs more tactical intrigue I think.

So tl:dr is give us police/civilization who try to catch you with their big police ships and who run all the real world cities/social hubs that are not just some run down outposts. Also chainshot and convoy/escort missions. Theres my ramble, Ive needed to do this for a while, this game is like the biggest sandbox of potential ever so I hope the hypetrain of cool ideas never dies for this one. Keep it alive by throwing some thoughts/discussion my way. And sorry if all of this was suggested before, i was too lazy to do a search.

I think using countries in this case would be pretty bad, but using something like "The marines" would be interesting.

In the lore of the game, it is impossible for large ships to reach the Sea of Thieves, but something like that would be interesting. I like the idea that the pirates come together to defeat this monster. I just don't think it's right that it is unsinkable and unboardable. Perhaps, even a game mode in the arena where there would be several ships against this one.

The other obvious thing is the often suggested social hub outpost of nonviolence, since you know, where are the big serious ports in sea of thieves? I like the idea of a social hub outpost, but I don't like being limited, so I wouldn't let it be a safezone. If the player wants to go there with his ship full of loot, it is his risk.

Escort missions, where you have to protect a ship (or a convoy of them) running from one place to the next. I really like this idea. I saw an idea once where these ships would have to be approached correctly, or they would lose their cargo value. One of the players would have to enter it and take the ship to the outpost to be sold, the more holes, the less it is worth. Of course, they could only invade and take your treasures, but it is an option.

  • I really like this idea, I have made a post on the navy and a hub, but I think the hub should not be a save zone and I think you should be able to take a NPC hostage and demand trading ships to give up their treasure.

  • @aarniometsuri Yea I like the idea of the Spanish Armada and it should work that if they chase you, you just sail into the storm and they all sink..

  • @aarniometsuri

The Sea of Thieves is an isolated area. No major navy or fleet can enter, for three reasons - 1: The location of the Sea of Thieves itself, and the path through the Devil's Shroud, is a secret known to few outside of it. 2: The path into the Sea of Thieves is far too small and erratic to bring formations or even large individual ships through. This is also why our galleons are so small. 3: Any large force which does find a way to attempt incursion into the Sea of Thieves is quickly driven off. This was shown when the entirety of the newly formed skeleton armada was fought off in a battle lasting for over a month straight.
Because of these reasons, the Sea of Thieves is a pirate safe haven. It has bountiful lands filled with treasure, no government to attempt to hunt down all pirates, and few threats beyond other pirates and some natural monsters, which are all but consistent. Should you fall in battle, or in any other way, the Ferryman will (not so) gladly bring you and your vessel back to the world of the living. As for gameplay, you already have roaming skeleton ships loaded with treasure, only attacking when attacked, you already have ambushing skeleton ships, chasing you down until one of you sinks or a significant obstacle hinders them, you already have fleets of enemy ships in open sea, and you already have fortress islands with vaults of treasure within. You also already have ‘escort missions’, you just have to carry the cargo yourself rather than sailing alongside another ship (should even one ship attack you, the game will not give anyone involved kind loading times given a three or more ship conflict). No need for a navy to add another form of existing gameplay, causing both to be neglected further.

  • @ultmateragnarok While this may be true the Grand maratime union has tried to infiltrate the sea of thieves with smaller ships, they are planning on building larger ships INSIDE the sea of thieves. the emporuium salesmen are acually a part of GMU. many of the merchants alliance are ex memebers of the union aswell.

  • @fllw3rb0y

The GMU is indeed planning on bringing larger ships into the Sea of Thieves. Specifically, they're using the Ancient Coins, which have a small shroudbreaking effect, to make a temporary path through the Shroud. However, they'd need a considerable force to get a large enough foothold to build bigger ships within the Sea of Thieves, as the pirates could drive out smaller forces and could disrupt construction behind some large forces. Additionally, the other threats might make them incapable of doing so - the skeletons and sea monsters attack everyone indiscriminately, and the storms or volcanoes could certainly stop them from doing anything for a bit.
