In every pirate fantasy ive ever been a part of (this sentence makes sense if your into pirates as much as I am as an adult), theres always the sense that pirates operate on the fringes of civilized society, and in time law and order will catch up to the them. But in sea of thieves, pirates are the norm. And while im not completely against this idea of a pirate utopia where all manner of undesirable gentleman can roam free without fear of persecution, wouldnt it be cool to add a faction that represents the "status quo" of the universe? The spanish or english armada, the police so to speak, would go well with a lot of the popular suggestions, and it could be an expansion of the current merchants alliance.
One being be the raid boss type mega galleon people have wanted as a playable ship, that doesnt necessarily have to have 40 cannons, but you know, have so many that its broadside would make anyone quiver in their boots. Maybe in order ot implement it they would have to make it unboardable or something, and you could even toy with the idea of making it unsinkable, where it really is just about avoiding these monsters. It would act as the "police" whos constantly trying to catch you while you loot, smuggle and plunder stuff that dont belong to you. Would give merchant missions more pve elements.
The other obvious thing is the often suggested social hub outpost of nonviolence, since you know, where are the big serious ports in sea of thieves? In the city you would have to give up your cargo and give your ship to the vallet, and there you could interact with players and some variety of npc:s (this would prob need to be behind a loading screen). It would make the world feel so much more real and full, not the empty wasteland of skeletons it is now. Another reason is when im running merchant quests i dont feel like im a wealthy trader of exotic goods, i feel like im running weed, rags and booze to bums who live on deserted islands. Not that i dont love the thematic elements in that, but it would feel cool to start off from that and progress to someone who runs gold, silk and exotic spices from colonial outposts like kingston back to rich dudes in the motherland. Not very pirate like I know, but I think sea of thieves lore has room for people who want to be more like privateers or mercenaries. Which brings me to another related suggestion thats propably been here already but fits this theme:
Escort missions, where you have to protect a ship (or a convoy of them) running from one place to the next. This has probably been suggested but it fits in with the theme of working for civilized society. Obivously you could do it the other way around, where you have to rob a convoy. In that same vein more suggestions and random thoughts: I wanna be able to rob civilians at gun point. Not because I have a dark side, but because thats part of the pirate thing too. Npc ships that surrender under fire and let you board them and loot them would give an alternative to having to sink ships with as much firepower as possible. In that same vein: chainshots. The things that target masts and sails, possibly crippling or slowing down the ship instead of destroying the hull. This game needs more options for pursuing enemies. Right now against another player you cant really pursue them if they know which way the wind has to go for their ship to be faster. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, having options to avoid pvp in a game where it can happen at any time is important. But ship combat needs more tactical intrigue I think.
So tl:dr is give us police/civilization who try to catch you with their big police ships and who run all the real world cities/social hubs that are not just some run down outposts. Also chainshot and convoy/escort missions. Theres my ramble, Ive needed to do this for a while, this game is like the biggest sandbox of potential ever so I hope the hypetrain of cool ideas never dies for this one. Keep it alive by throwing some thoughts/discussion my way. And sorry if all of this was suggested before, i was too lazy to do a search.
