Portuguese Man o' War , A Siphonophore ( or J*******h type creature )

  • Just to add an additional threat into the game.

I had been thinking the addition of a Portuguese man o' war (PMOW) type creature. With venomous long tentacles that deliver a painful sting, it traps and paralyzes its prey while "reeling" it inwards to digest, the tentacles themselves could hold spawned treasure.

Ideally the PMOW to be larger than life itself " A rare event, boss type creature ".
Living at the surface of the sea, the gas-filled bladder visible between the waves indicates its presence. It could be protected with a swarm of smaller j*******h which are basically there to mess your life up.

The idea to carefully "thread the needle" to collect your rewards, requiring perfect timing between the movement of the venomous tentacles.

    PMOW is not a J*******h:
"Despite its appearance, the Portuguese man o' war is not a true J*******h but a siphonophore, which, unlike J*******h, is not actually a single multicellular organism, but a colonial organism made up of specialized individual animals (of the same species) called zooids or polyps."
And I know you know this because you put it in the tittle.

  • @rattlyfob Siphonophore is in the title....

@rattlyfob If you looked Siphonophore is in the title....

"And I know you know this because you put it in the tittle"

Please read the whole post ;)

Also, I think it is a cool idea and coild be fun, just dont refer to them as J*******h.

Also, bear in mind the individual polyps can form together with another colony and can make an even larger specimen.

  • @rattlyfob ... yeah, cool.
Iam not necessarily saying PMOW... but maybe some type of "Jelly" type creature.

  • @rattlyfob I do like the idea you make that the "creature" can grow/envolve into a larger specimen.

Then how about "Portuguese Man o War (or some other J*******h / siphonophore) boss" as the title so as to not confuse or mislead people?

Its actually quite fun in real life to catch 2 im a jar, shake it, and watch them reform together

    Taking your 'reform" idea.

What about the "creature" itself being fairly invulnerable to conventional attack

    Gunpowder barrels
Bad idea, exploding these will produce a tentacle/sting soup that will cloud the area. Player will receive flying sting damage. Creature will reform back over time.

    Pistols/EyeOfReach/BB
Same thing as above smaller scale effect, ultimately blocking the road ahead.

    Sword
Smaller scale effect again, high chance broken tentacle/stings hitting you as you are at close quarters. Although could be used with care, to get through to a tricky "loot" location - possibly high up in the 'tentacle nest'

    The best approach
Be skilled at swimming and have good spatial awareness, while all the time running out of air to collect the tentacle booty.

Very similar at the end of the day to the "Shipwrecks" in the game.

But with added danger. If you attack, it will attack, if you collide with a tentacle/sting you will feel it (major health damage). Too much damage... you're away to the ferry of the damned.

What I like about this "Creature" is that you can't wear it down, it will just keep regenerating. Your approach has to be on point the entire time.

    The Booty
It could simply be higher tier spices & chests, skulls. But they could mix in rare "cosmetics" that can only be gotten from this creature. Sails, Figureheads, Vanity gear..... etc " They would appear in collectable crates "

If you collect a cosmetic you already have... you should be able to sell it at the Outpost. Approach the suitable vendor with crate in hand, you will be prompted to sell or equip. If you choose to sell... It then appears with the suitable vendor, for them to sell on... obviously for them at a greatly inflated price. If you choose to equip, but another team-mate already has the unique cosmetic they get money instead. Other Eagle eyed players (different crews) then could buy them without any of the risk.

    Just a few ideas...

  • @piratecraggy An interesting idea.. the idea of paralysis needs to be added too, stung too many times mean you are paralysed, and either drift or sink for a few seconds till it wears off. At the very least j*******h need to be added to populate the oceans and make the more interesting :) Perhaps a floating hazard which doesn't attack players but if you swim into one e.g. on your way to a ship wreck or swimming up, you get a bit of a sting xD

The idea of a giant one as a boss is interesting for sure

  • I like the sound of this creature very much. ^^
