@rattlyfob I do like the idea you make that the "creature" can grow/envolve into a larger specimen.
Its actually quite fun in real life to catch 2 im a jar, shake it, and watch them reform together
Taking your 'reform" idea.
What about the "creature" itself being fairly invulnerable to conventional attack
Gunpowder barrels
Bad idea, exploding these will produce a tentacle/sting soup that will cloud the area. Player will receive flying sting damage. Creature will reform back over time.
Pistols/EyeOfReach/BB
Same thing as above smaller scale effect, ultimately blocking the road ahead.
Sword
Smaller scale effect again, high chance broken tentacle/stings hitting you as you are at close quarters. Although could be used with care, to get through to a tricky "loot" location - possibly high up in the 'tentacle nest'
The best approach
Be skilled at swimming and have good spatial awareness, while all the time running out of air to collect the tentacle booty.
Very similar at the end of the day to the "Shipwrecks" in the game.
But with added danger. If you attack, it will attack, if you collide with a tentacle/sting you will feel it (major health damage). Too much damage... you're away to the ferry of the damned.
What I like about this "Creature" is that you can't wear it down, it will just keep regenerating. Your approach has to be on point the entire time.
The Booty
It could simply be higher tier spices & chests, skulls. But they could mix in rare "cosmetics" that can only be gotten from this creature. Sails, Figureheads, Vanity gear..... etc " They would appear in collectable crates "
If you collect a cosmetic you already have... you should be able to sell it at the Outpost. Approach the suitable vendor with crate in hand, you will be prompted to sell or equip. If you choose to sell... It then appears with the suitable vendor, for them to sell on... obviously for them at a greatly inflated price. If you choose to equip, but another team-mate already has the unique cosmetic they get money instead. Other Eagle eyed players (different crews) then could buy them without any of the risk.
Just a few ideas...
