Is there some trick to getting colored flames?

  • I have died numerous times by the correct means to supposedly take the flame from the well of fates, but I have only successfully gotten a colored flame once. Is there some special condition that must also be met besides dying by some specific means?

  • @redwoodtheelf die by fire - red flame
Die by shark - blue flame
Die by skeletons - green flame
Die by lightning - white flame
Die by snake/kraken poison - purple flame
Die by player - pink flame

Done everysingle one of these, and only got a colored flame once (it was a green Skellie Flame) - have never either repeated that or gotten any other color.

Maybe try again...never had any problems with them

  • Seriously, there are so many flames, there is almost no way to die that SHOULDN'T give you a flame color except maybe drowning or falling from a great height (even cannonfire should be either skellie or player depending on who fired it)

  • Maybe you have to be completely uninjured and ALL the damage needs to be of that type? Which means Lightning would require getting struck twice, since one bolt usually won't kill you from full health

Cannonfire is like that...shot from a player, pink light...shot from a skellie (ship or tower or island), green light

No...it's just the hit that killed you...I often kill myself by hurting myself with blunderbombs and give me the rest with firebombs, to get the red light

Nope, should be pretty simple; whatever source dealt the killing blow determines the flame you get.

Just to cover all of our bases, you don't automatically get the flame. You need to approach the flame of fate in the ferry with your lantern out and raised (use left trigger on Xbox), then press X when prompted. You're probably already aware of this, but I figured it's better to ask and have you already know than the other way around.

Yup. I do that every time I die, and like I said, I only got a colored flame ONCE.

Maybe a stupid question...but did you raise the lantern?

  • @schwammlgott Yes. I've tried turning the lantern flame off as well. I only see "you cannot take a flame from the well of fates" when I lift my lantern, except that ONE time.

How bizarre! At this point, I'd recommend submitting a support ticket. Get video evidence if you can; that can help them pinpoint the problem.

  • Aha! I figured it out...I had conditioned myself to turn OFF the lantern before trying to take the flame, thinking the lantern needed to be empty to take a new flame. but it's the opposite. Apparently the fate flame needs an existing flame to attach itself to.

Glad you figured it out! Funny how the issue often turns out to be something simple like that.
