Obviously the world had gambling, or else pirate crews wouldn't have found it necessary to ban it. :) I was simply providing historical background information some people might find interesting and/or useful. I have no argument for or against the ability to throw dice in the game. More toys in the sandbox!
Here's another related tidbit: Captains rarely wrote the pirate code themselves. Usually the pirate code was written and agreed to by the whole crew. Pirate crews were very much democracies. Captains were elected into office by the crew, and could be removed just as easily. The only time the captain had complete authority was during battles or chases. So any prohibitions on gambling or other vices were self-imposed by the crew to promote the harmonious and efficient operation of the vessel.
