Glannigan’s Guide to Honorable PVP

  • Hey everyone I’m going to explain how to Adventure PVP without being a Troll!

    1. Skin in the game! You got to have skin in the game! Treasure!

The first thing I do is Hit an Active Skull Fort and some shipwrecks/barrels on the way to the Skull Fort. I need supplies. Cannon Balls, Planks and Gun Powder! But I need Treasure to decorate the boat!

No one is going to be upset if they get wrecked by a boat covered in treasure and glowing skulls. If anything they should Be excited about respawning and finding you!

This Treasure isn’t for selling. This is the reward someone gets for defeating me!

99% of the time I have more to lose attacking you than I do to gain!

Try not to engage in PVP if you don’t have any skin in the game. That’s lame! (Unless your out for revenge that’s ok).

    1. The Crew ~ it’s hard to find a Crew on board with this. I recommend the LFG Tool on XBOX so everyone knows what they are joining and the expectations. Nothing more annoying than someone taking my Skulls down and putting them in the Captains Quarters and demanding to go sell right as we get skin in the game! Best doing PL only as they normally don’t need the money and are just looking for fun.

    2. Reapers - I like to collect all 4 and keep them on the boat! Again, What fun is PVP if you got nothing to lose? No risk, no reward and again this is to reward those who also engage in world PVP. This will also help them find you on the map so they can plan their revenge accordingly.

By now you should have stopped for a Skull Fort or two. About 6 sets of floating barrels and should have plenty of supplies to fend off 2-4 other Player ships.

Reapers flag can also be fun but you will lose the element of Surprise and ships will just avoid you so in my experience Reapers Flag leads to less PVP.

    1. Spawn Killing - Completely unacceptable UNLESS you are so short on supplies it is necessary to spawn kill a Sloop for example while you liberate their Wood and Cannon Balls. Once done Stop Spawn Killing them! Sink them or sail away.

    2. Tall Tales - if you sink someone and they message you for their Quest item leave it somewhere for them or give it back!

    3. When the crew decides as a majority it’s time to call it a night Then you can go sell all your treasure and stuff!

As insane and crazy as this sounds this play style will lead to more laughs and memorable nights than any other! It usually ends with a huge amount of profit as well and you will sleep like a baby knowing you PVP’ed like a Real man and not some sniveling coward in a sloop with 15 wood and 25 cannon balls.

Worst case scenario: We get sunk! Oh noes who cares I’m already rich and have all the cosmetics I want. We had a great time but you know what the best part is? The guy that sunk us (most likely someone we’ve sunk 1-3 times) had the BEST night ever as he engaged in world PVP. Sunk another player and got a TON of loot for it! So even though we may not have ended the way I planned I know we gave whoever sank us one of the best most memorable nights they will ever have playing SOT’s!

  • Lucky for me, honor isn't required. Jokes aside, I get and understand your point. However, these become arbitrary rules outside of being practical. Let's assume I value loot, of which I don't because I am already rich. Logically speaking, it makes sense for me to engage in theft with the lowest risk I can possible obtain. This includes selling loot before engaging or even stocking up on possible consumables needed for the fight. Something like gunpowder if that is your preference. Having honor is one thing, being smart about it is another.

Neat joke, their is more salt on the ships than their is in the actual Sea. This unfortunately is wishful thinking.

If I were to make a NAbber's Guid to PVP, it would be one sentence.

Stop putting so much value in digital loot, lighten up, and just enjoy the combat regardless of victory.

The only “Loot” that matters to me is Cannonballs (Severe lack of cannon balls and an abundance of freaking fruit).

But when I PvP I’m not just looking to enhance my experience but the other participants (willing or unwilling) experience as well!

  • It's a fair perspective, and if that works for you, more power to you.

I will say some of my best victories are when I'm fighting for two forts worth of loot on a sloop and I manage to sink the brig that's following me with a stronghold g. barrel. Having stakes do raise the tension.

However, personally, I think being dishonorable cowards is part of the pirate way. Spawn killing is an effective way to keep a boat occupied and sink it on your own without a keg. Chasing a ship loaded with treasure when you've got nothing to lose is time efficient and safer.

Making people angry in and of itself is a strategy.

I don't know, I guess I just enjoy being the kind of pirate that will kick dirt in your face and play on the concertina after taking your loot. There's value in being honorable, but sometimes being a cruel thieving coward is just more fun.

I think the feeling of loss in the game is more to do with the time it took to get the loot than anything else. "Ah this guy just cost me 2hrs".

Nothing in this game is worse than losing time to someone that just spawned and started attacking with nothing to lose. They don't even dress up their ship. Spawn, try to get a few hits in, jump servers. Repeat.

Exactly - I always give people
The opportunity to take back what was stolen from them! They just have to PVP for it and they will get back everything they lost plus 10X more 😬

Was no fun had in that entire 2 hour span? Did you not enjoy the comraderie with sailing with a crew? Was fending off Kraken, Megs, and other pirates not a fun part of the adventure?

If the whole contingency of fun relies on success or achievement of the goal, does that mean every time you fail their was zero fun to be had? I mean we hear it all the time on this forum. I just wasted 4 hours....3 hours....2 hours etc just for it to be lost in seconds. This isn't to say this is your thought process, but anyone who base their fun on success alone, give the vibe of sore losers. Still having fun even while losing is needed for this game. This game has somewhat a hidden maturity required for this game. If someone is unable to have fun simple due to losing loot, they might need to rethink if this is the game for them. Many other games have significantly higher stakes in comparison to Sea of Thieves.

Was playing the game called "We are Billions" This game can be super unforgiving, one careless mistake or a moment of relaxation at the wrong time means hours gone. I spent entire Saturday trying to beat this one stage. Never did beat it that day, but I wouldn't say that Saturday was wasted. I still had fun even though I never achieved what I set out to do.

  • @nabberwar I take your point. Yes fun was probably had in getting to the 2hr mark but not always. I don't think this diminishes the point of the honorable PVP that is being talked about. It was only meant to say that losing the picture of a chest instead of getting a picture of money for it is not the only thing lost.

It takes a bit of the sting out of losing when I am chased down by a loot laden ship dressed in all black with reapers flying everywhere as opposed to four folks on a default galleon that just spawned in and put up a white flag. Or worse yet, come up to you yelling "We're friendly" then backing it up with cannon fire.
