beasts both beautiful and frightening

  • Many games these days involve hideous foes with grotesque aberrations and gore. I wish more games took inspiration from real nature. Sure, there are ugly and always-frightening animals, like viperfish. But many dangerous animals are more like bears, wolves, buffalo, elephants, orca, and octopi -- peaceful and fascinating when they are not eating or defending territory. Bears can be pretty and playful from a distance. But one looks very different when charging toward you or howling.

It would be nice to see beasts like that in Sea of Thieves. Pirates could admire them from a distance, watching them playfully splash in the waves or scratch their backs against trees. But if a pirate gets too close, it becomes a terror.

  • I watched Annihilation last night, and that bear was proper freaky.

Also, I want a pet octopus in game to sit on my shoulder.

  • @ersatz-nihilist On a side note, my marine biology teacher in high school kept a small octopus for a time. In other nearby tanks he kept shrimp.

The shrimp disappeared. But the octopus was still in its tank. This happened a couple times. So one day the teacher and some students turned off the lights and hid.

The octopus pushed open the lid of its tank, crawled across the counter, opened the other tank and slithered in to eat the shrimp. Then it crawled back to its own tank!

  • @hallower1980 No way. That's so awesome.
