Safer Seas an attempt to drum up emporium sales?

  • I have always been of the opinion that pushing away PvE oriented players is bad business. That's literally millions of dollars of potential income up in smoke. I am curious if this is part of the decision to finally add a Safe place for PvE minded people to play. I think the 70% reduction in progression is already punishing enough.

Not having captaincy however for those who know the game is a huge deal breaker even for people who would have accepted the 70% hit. The time spent to make the same amount of money as adventure is already increase by 70% but now you need to spend upto 10x longer selling loot to various NPCs at the outpost.

Also a big one here..... Not being able to save ship cosmetics since captaincy will be disabled. If the big point of safer seas is to drum up real money sales you are going to also push those people away but not letting them save and see the cosmetics they just paid real money for? Why? So you cant progress milestones which are nothing more than a symbol of how much free time you have on your hands vs any measure of skill? Even the hourglass trinkets which are the closest thing to a status symbol can be obtained just by playing long enough.

I get Athenas is disabled on safer seas because like 90% of streaming content is athena steals. And reapers being a pvp faction also makes sense why they aren't available. But the main reason pve discords ever formed int he first place was 2 hour long athena voyages to get that ONE item at the end. The only thing in the game to give athena rep. Now with so much athena loot from various sources allowing that on safer seas wouldn't impact much. Especially since you still have the massive -70% income.

Imagine trying to farm the Dark Adventurers set with -70% income......If this is how you are going to handle PvE servers you might as well have just allowed everyone to access the private servers streamers had and not have any progression of any kind. I imagine anyone whos seen my past posts knows I have always been in favor of PvE servers... If done right. I feel like were halfway there. I think adventure mode needs a boost to all it's values in general. Even in year 1 my crew made a rule nothing under tier4 loot since it wasn't worth the time running it to the NPC

I dunno. I've been ignored on a lot of things in this game and more and more of that stuff has now come to pass so I imagine the initial release of safer seas will bomb. But it is laying the foundation to be tweaked and improved upon in the future..... Or deleted because "only 3% of players engage in this mode"

  • Not even really worth getting too fired up about it yet on either side

gotta wait for it to be implemented to see signs of effect

and they have a history of randomly popping up and making huge changes that completely changes the content and stated intent of the content anyway. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they go extreme one way or the other on it when they react to whatever data they gather after 6 months or 9 months or whatever it is.

largely a wait and see type situation, I know people won't lol, but that's what it is

  • @magus104 As far as the safer seas goes, the less people who use it, the better, since each crew will take up an entire server. Furthermore, Rare specifically added it to enable people to learn how to play the game in a controlled environment.

Oh, when did the universe start revolving around you, Ptolemy? You aren't being ignored, you're one voice amongst thousands and are not in charge of Rare.

But otherwise... yay? 3% of play time in Safer Seas means 97% of play time is spent in High Seas, which is the goal. Safer Seas is for new pirates to learn how to play and for casual pirates who don't care about money and just want to socialize with their crew. The goal should be 0% of play time in Safer Seas.

  • @lordqulex

30% is enough to at least gain someone.

  • No is the answer. It’s there to encourage you to play in the High Seas so you’re not sitting in the Safer Seas all of the time. It’s a compromise without losing the core value of the game.

Well, the goal shouldn't be to have 0% playtime in Safer Seas, because then the game wouldn't attract new players anymore ;-)

  • @magus104 It shouldn't even have that 30%, it should be an adventure without any gain in money, commendations or reputation.

An adventure for those who want to play half of what the game should be.

In my opinion, the real experience of SOT will still be PVPVE

If the goal is to get people into Captaincy and on the high seas it makes more sense to build some hunger but not force people to go without as they gain some experience.

It's a build a pirate program. Some will stay in there, some will cheese it, but ultimately the goal is to prepare pirates for risk filled adventure.

To put it bluntly the environment needs to replace us, experienced players that are closer to the end than the beginning. It's long been the same names and the same pirates because the environment hasn't been building pirates up effectively. The game needs new experienced pirates, new content creators, new personalities, new passion that rises through the piratical food chain.

  • correlation does not equal causation.

  • @gaudierpuppy866 I thought safer seas was player hosted?

  • @xzodeak the only place I’ve heard mention of this was in Falcore’s video. Not in the official announcement video or from any of the official sources. It’s a good assumption (and I know people like to think everything he says is true), but it’s also possible for them to host these like normal servers… so we will need clarification from Rare of how it is hosted.

  • @abjectarity Falcore also said sharks/megs are controlled by monkeys.....take everything they say with a massive pinch of salt 😂

  • @triheadedmonkey exactly! His video for season 9 release said kraken could spawn while a world event is up, but that was also wrong. I have one specific friend who thinks Falcore gets fed secret knowledge and footage so he can prerecord videos and that he’s never wrong. I think he needs a tinfoil pirate hat.

so this is the reason I've had to hear this so often this season even though I knew different lol

    You’re welcome 🤣

Doing that would put the server in the hands of players, which would likely result in reverse engineering and then a lot of "rich" pirates suddenly appearing on the leaderboards.

It will never be self hosted.

  • It's supposed to be for newbros and families not a safe haven for all PvEers.

  • @magus104

You've been preaching about it being a potential cash cow for years I believe 🤑

    Wouldn't surprise me.

Wouldn't surprise me they have confidence in the numbers that (only they and MS) have access to enough to split the playerbase.

Wouldn't suprise me if it's a Hail Mary in the 3rd quarter either lol.
