This is a topic I wanted to touch on in light of the new information from the press release, most notably the way character selection works. So it seems pretty much confirmed that SoT is a session-based game where your gamertag itself is where all progress is saved, and the character attached to that gamertag will change every time you play.
As some of you may know, I have been a long-time fan of this game and have played the alpha for over a year, spanning over 600 hours last I checked. Recently, I've been quite critical about the projected "lack of content™" with the game's launch release. While we still don't know the extent of how much we can progress, the main worry is that once I have won thousands of ship fights, stowed away on hundreds of ships for stealthy adventures, maxed out every trading company, purchased every item, and accrued a ridiculous amount of money, then there might not be much left to do.
This can all be easily alleviated, however, if we are simply given the ability to start over. Starting over in games is something that I can't get enough of, it's so addicting. Trying out a different team in a Pokemon game, trying a different build in Dark Souls, or even prestiging in a Call of Duty game: This is all powerful stuff for continued motivation to play.
I understand that the game is meant to focus on just being plain fun. And believe me, SoT is incredibly fun. But I worry that it won't last after thousands of hours of play. One of the easiest band-aide fixes here is to just allow players to reset their TC ranks, gold count, items owned, etc. I've had by far the most fun with SoT whenever this has been done for me during the alpha, and I'd like to be able to keep doing that in the full release. Starting over is something that allows hardcore players like me to get a ton more mileage out of games with finite amounts of content.
