SoT launching in the wrong screen

  • Hey there pals, hope you're having a nice day!

I'm seeking for help in this forum because I couldn't find a solution in google yet and my IT skills couldn't handle this either. I'm having, as the title says, a problem with dual screens.
The problem is that when I launch SoT it opens up in the secondary screen (1366x768-60Hz) and when I try to move it to the main screen (1920x1080-144Hz) using Win+Shift+LeftArrow the game window stays in the secondary screen's resolution and locked on the top left corner of the screen, and it stays the same if I try to change the ingame resolution from the video settings menu.
Y'all might be wondering "Why dont you use Alt+Enter to change it to fullscreen and drag it to the main screen?" Already tried pals, the only thing I get by doing this is that the game changes to Windowmode and it just "minimizes" to never pop up again... Cant even Alt+Enter on it because it does nothing, not even showing on the secondary screen again. To revert that I had to go to the game config file (located in "%localappdata%\Athena\Saved\Config\WindowsClient") and modify the GameUserSettings.ini where there's a True/False parameter called "Fullscreen". So no, Alt+Entering is not going to solve any problems for me...
I have had come across a temporal solution for this by accessing to my Nvidia control panel and disabling and enabling the secondary screen, this is the only way I've found yet to solve the issue temporally, but it's annoying to do so every time I start the game 😤
By the way I have the game on Steam and on XboxLive (paid the beta pass), and in the Xbox version I had no problems at all, but I bought the Steam version because I have some problems with the Xbox interface when receiving and sending invites and I quite dont want to reinstall Windows to fix that issue (and yes, I reinstalled the XboxLive app from the installer provided by MS via MSStore and downloading it from the page and from the Powershell console), so I'm using the Steam version of the game.
I'm using a Nvidia GTX1660Ti by the way, in a 64b OS (Win10 of course).
So if anyone has this same problem or has found a permanent fix for this I'm glad you'd join this thread!

Thanks for reading this and salutes, fellow pirates!

P.S.: I attached some screenshots to get a better understandment!

  • @ofdoublekiller i personally don't have 2 screens so I'm no expert but i can give it a shot. as a side note, rare is aware that the windowed mode causes it to minimize so its not an issue with your PC.

in the steam launch settings for sea of thieves (im sure you know how to get there) type "-fullscreen" without quotes.

as well as this, on your desktop, right click and press "display settings". under "multiple displays" make sure the main screen is set to the correct monitor.

if this doesn't work, im sure you know of Geforce experience (to update your drivers) but in the games section of Geforce experience you can enter and set defult settings for sea of thieves which will apply every time you launch. i would set the mode to fullscreen, and the resolution to the resolution of the monitor you want it displayed on.

if this still fails, i do know that steam has an option to start game on specific monitors but only if you are in big picture mode, so that's kind of annoying.

  • Thanks for your answer @butterpig01!

I actually didn't know that Rare was aware of the minimizing problem, so that's something.

Forgot to add that I tried the launch parameters from Steam too with no avail, I was actually looking if there were more parameters to test, but couldn't find them.

And yeah, the "Diplay settings" from Windows was double checked, so the problem isn't there.

I forgot about the GeForce Experience game settings though, I'll take a shot with that and update the thread with the results!
Won't even try with the Big Picture mode of Steam, that would be the same as the temporal solution I'm using already, but more annoying 😂

Thanks again for your answer and I hope you have a nice day!
    Salutes!

Edit: Just tried the GeForce Experience settings options and nope, can't choose the display screen and the game is already at 1920x1080, but still launching in the secondary screen 🤷‍♂️😤

  • Just in case, im bumping this, still having the issue 😤

  • @ofdoublekiller i would tell you more about the fix for the minimizing but doing so would break my NDA. just hold out bro.

  • @ofdoublekiller I had the same problem. I was able to fix it by first pressing alt+enter (now the window disappears) then press win+shift+leftarrow and then press alt+enter again.

  • Guys, great news! With the July 29th update this problem got fixed! I can even minimize and change it dragging it, but the most important thing is it remembers the last screen I used, so no more changing screen!

Thanks to everyone who replied! 😊

  • @ofdoublekiller see? told ya to wait. happy sailing.
