Only 0.36% of players are Pirate Legends in Sea of Thieves - Gamereactor - Discuss.

  • Some interesting calculations and assumptions made here from the achievements which have been logged?

Basically, 0.23% of people who've played the game have gone on to become pirate legends. That's out of roughly four million players, as announced by Rare during E3. That said, the redditor then goes on to only include those players who have earned the achievement for leaving port, which rather surprisingly is just shy of two-thirds, and of those players, 0.36% of players have gone on to become a pirate legend.

The referenced reddit post is here - I didn't check the maths!

  • @katttruewalker how do ye not manage to leave port? lol. That is a staggering number of people who installed the game, picked a pirate, went through the load and then thought 'nah, not for me' an' closed the game. Incredible :)

  • @awesomecoreusa I know right! Think of all the things they are missing out on!

  • @awesomecoreusa It's that cursed ipg, ye knows, I must have spent about an hour in there at least, or maybe the winsome ways o' the tavern lass?

  • @katttruewalker but when I'm go through the Xbox achievements it says only 0.24% unlocked the legendary status achievement.

Edit. Oh okay you edited the post. 😁

  • that sounds about right when game pass gave everyone two weeks free there would be many who installed tried and left because it wasn't for them .

  • @nunoazuldimeter

It's an interesting discussion and as I said, I didn't check the maths lol, in fact all the figures are likely a bit suspect?

  • Yeah the 4 million figure was for "active players" but the % is from "anyone who ever played" so using it to calculate the number of Legends is flawed, also for number of people who left port you've got to remember that the achievements were turned off in the first month to help with server load so millions of people who just used a two week free trial of game pass early on won't have gotten any achievements even though they played the game

  • One thing is sure, the major encounters I have in the high seas are with other legendary crews.

So at least the majority of active players, players that are returning to the game, already reach that achievement.

  • @awesomecoreusa I know there were some people who just couldn't get the game to work due to bugs etc, there's bound to be a fair few in that number who didn't meed the minimum spec but decided to try for free on gamepass to see if it ran, the servers were a bit mashed up around launch and some may have been put off by that and never came back, and in any game public perception matters there are some people who won't play a game unless their group thinks it's cool so when their friends wouldn't play and the negative reviews landed they didn't log in again. Still seems like a stupidly high number that didn't even make it out of port.

I remember my first day, I made it as far as the nearest galleon and then got my first trip to the ferry.

Then I logged out and joined a group on discord.

Really? Interesting... I still run into more non-legends, or at least pirates who are not flaunting their legendary status with clothing or titles. Most of the people I crew up with these days be legends though, say 75%, nice of them to let a scrub like me hang out at the big-boy table :)

  • .23% × 4,000,000 = 9,200

  • @kzoo-kid which is about right from what we have been told by Rare recently following the introduction of Doubloons and buying letters from them for rep gains.

Are you asking where the .36% is coming from or why it says .24% and not .23%? It's .36% of people who unlocked the achievement for setting sail for the first time have gotten pirate legend. .24% probably means more people have gotten legend since the OP did the maths.

  • @awesomecoreusa it's the case for me at least.
The major part I'm seeing are pert of it.
Spotting the tittle of those fallen pirates in the ferry of the damned, some ship costumizations, and at least some eye patches.

I'm not encountering those fully pride players with all the set and tittle. Which may seems to tell those are active players who are enjoying their character by cycling costumizations, like me.
I'm not counting Athena's Fortune items.

The other day me and my mates were heading to an active fort after we defeated a legendary sloop, we spotted a Galleon parked near the Outpost. We went there trying to make a partnership with them. It happened they had legendary costumizations too.
We changed ours to look alike them and be easy to differentiate the partnership from other ships.

But as we arrived to the fort, the other enemy ship had the same costumization too. So basically in that short space we were 4 legendary crews.

  • @awesomecoreusa I think they might have left port etc but during the period where they turned off achievements and maybe they never came back later when they turned them back on?

  • @danqrl could be, good thinking.

My first time playing, my buddy and I got killed at the outpost while just trying to learn the ropes.....people trying game pass, could have had a bad experience from the start, or just hated not having character creator...or no tutorial felt lost..I can think of many reasons.

  • That's a really low number.
I think it'll raise really fast. Most of my friends on discord have been playing a little less then I have and most of them are now at the 45-50 mark, combined with the writs this will go fast.

It's nice to see how many players have left port, most games have thse little achievements to see how many players actually tried the game as opposed to just starting it up and not playing it. It always amazes me how many people do this.

  • @xcalypt0x I created a similar post in our Portuguese group of SoT some days ago.
And it happens the same there, while we were discussing over the matter it did grow 0.01%. eheh

  • Then why are they in 90% of my games? Next.

  • I am curious to see what the average number of people playing is now on a daily basis. Last night there should have been plenty of people playing. I was on from 3 pm til 9 pm (us eastern time). With a new event just starting there should have been ships but the servers were not very busy or at least no busier then any other night. I went to 4 different servers and...crickets. Honestly I don't think that many people are playing at least not stateside.

  • @katttruewalker

That's interesting, but what's more interesting is the number of Pirate Legends almost doubled since E3 and the first Bilge Rat adventure as I have stated there. I don't think the letters of recommendation are the reason it's increasing a lot these past days.

However, since E3 I saw the percentage increasing by 1% almost each 2 days and now it is taking almost 4 days. So either there is now more than 4,000,000 players or the big wave of new Pirate Legends is ending.

Can't wait to see how it will be before/after Cursed Sails!

  • I don't think we should trust the 4M players Rare always boasts about. Many probably just downloaded Sea of Thieves because it was free on Xbox Gamepass, started it once and then deleted it again. So they should not be counted towards the player base.

A much reliable statistic would be the percentage of pirate legends in some of the big discord communities, where about 5% of the active players seem to have reached pirate legend.

  • Over 5,000 pirate legends a month ago, is probable the numbers are accurate.

  • I dunno how many Pirate Legends there are.
But I know 4 who didnt manage to rob my non-legend crew of our fort loot last night :)

  • How many Athena 10 then? xD

  • @KattTruewalker I hope this post helps ease the pain some legends are having about wanting exclusive Legend content. I don't think Rare wants to bottleneck their content behind less than 1% of the player base just yet, It's always good to see stats! With the new letters more and more of us will be there soon enough.

  • When I unlocked the Pirate Legend achievement and saw that the percentage of Pirate Legends was less than 0.5%, I was pretty surprised! I come across at least one or two other pirate legends almost every day! So my theory is:

    A. There are way more PLs than we think

    Or..

    B. PLs are people who love this game enough to grind to the title, and still love the game enough to continue playing, so although only 0.35% of people who left the outpost are PLs, all (or most) of the PLs make up a larger percentage of active players. I don't know if that makes any sense lol

  • i got it when it was .06 players

  • @awesomecoreusa edit: my bad, accidental post... carry on.

  • @rattlyfob yes?

Yep, let's check now how many hours of playtime those 9k Legends got or put in every week compared to the non legends. Let's check at any given time, out of the totality of the Online players, how many connected players are Legends?

Most legends play several hours per day versus many casual players will put a couple of hours here and then.

Player base is not important, Active player base is o/

Not all non legends are casuals lol. I probably have more play time then some legends, I just chose to spend my time PvPing and exploring instead of grinding way to early and I'm glad I did.

You're an exception. Just because 0,3% of the players are legends and 60% left port, it doesn't mean that out of the 60% who left the port all are regular players, many could have quit the game.

So your stats actually don't mean much, only Rare knows.
