@misterfiretango said in Fishing Rod/Map launching is extremely fun and should be how cannon physics work normally:
@capt-greldik it increases it in some ways and decreases it in others, it increases the skill gap by rewarding good movement and precise timing, but decreases it by dramatically increasing the range that you can board from. although truth be told I don't want to argue much else with you because you're assigning moral weight to a video game. If the game had a strict philosophy on exploits from the beginning you might have an argument, but we have two cases of exploits being given an official O-K from rare, the sword lunge exploit and the galleon wall-run exploit.
Clearly, some exploits are considered game worthy, and I think this one is atleast worthy of consideration for that title due to the depth it adds to cannon launching and just how plain good and fun it feels to move through the air and skip through the water
My issue with it is the impact it has on a fight. There is nothing about morals in my post.
There’s no question that the exploit makes it far easier to board ships, and it can even be done at unreasonable angles that don’t even make sense. Using the exploit, people can board over and over in ways and with consistency that they couldn’t before.
Yes, the sword lunge is seemingly okay, but its impact is far less significant than the fishing pole/map exploit. Similarly, double gunning quick-swap definitely made weapons more lethal, and Rare nerfed it, even though it’s still possible albeit less effective.
Exploiting aside, let’s say we’re just discussing the mechanics and whether or not adding this to the game would make fights better. I don’t think that changing course mid-air adds to a fight in a positive way, I much prefer having to gauge the angle, distance, waves, and so on when attempting a deck shot. Steering mid-air is easy mode, imo, and I still don’t see how you could consider it an increase to the skill gap, since it without question makes deck shots significantly easier.
Maybe we should steer our cannon balls mid-air while we’re at it.
