Option to Change Ship

  • Would it "break the game" if you were allowed to change ship and continue your session? So many times I've been slooping with a friend and another friend wants to join the party. We have to end the session, lose all our resources and start again with a brigantine so they can join in. Or vice versa when we're playing with three or four people and one person needs to stop, all the other players have to lose their progress and start again in a smaller ship.

The only problem I can see with allowing players to change ship mid-session, is that players might spawn a galleon to get the extra resources, then instantly change to a sloop. But I'm sure there are ways to stop this being a viable strategy (e.g. charge a certain amount of gold to change ship, to account for starting resources).

I'm quite new to the game so I'm sure there are reasons I haven't thought of why this can't be allowed. I'd be interested to know what these are.

  • @eligibleeel6171 another issue would be you sink to someone so keep recruiting more people and coming back with bigger ships.

I wouldn't mind this mechanic if it included a forced server change but then most mission progress/loot would be lost from this anyway. Between captaincy supplies and merchant crates it's not difficult to restock so I'm not sure about this one.

I think allow changing to smaller ship on same server if someone gets off maybe and keep supps but not larger

  • @hiradc "another issue would be you sink to someone so keep recruiting more people and coming back with bigger ships"

This doesn't sound like an issue at all. I would love to sink a sloop only to have the same player come back in a galleon looking for revenge. That sounds awesome.

Captaincy supplies and merchant crates are very limited. Max 5 fire bombs, 5 blunderbombs, 80 cannonballs, and no way of getting your cursed cannonballs or phantomballs/ wraith balls back. Also you have to go through the process of cooking all your meat again.

  • @eligibleeel6171 why even buy captain supplies? I did that once for the achievement...just buy a supply crate and loot the outpost, cheaper and you get (most times) better stuff anyway...

  • Dive to a Shipwright in the Sea of the Dammed where you could get the upgraded or downgraded ship, then sail through a portal to be put back in a server where there is space for your new ship.

This removes the issue of people coming back with a bigger crew to get revenge.

  • @phantaxus thank you for this. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how to do this as I'm very new to the game. I've got as far as reading up on the Sea of the Damned and it says it can be accessed via the Pirate's Life and Captain of the Damned tall tales. I started doing the Pirate's Life tall tale and got to the Sea of the Damned but couldn't figure out how to dive to a shipwright.

Do I need to have completed the tall tales first? Thank you again for your help.

  • @eligibleeel6171 Sorry for the confusion. That was a speculative post, at the moment there is no way to change ship type while in game. I was just proposing a method the devs could provide that might allow it to happen.

  • At the moment there are only 5 ships on a server and there is a maximum of possible players in place, so you can't have for example 5 galleons on one server as 20 players surpasses the current maximum number of players on a server.

So, while changing to a brig or galleon on a server with only sloops would be possible, this would not always be the case.

Without changing server as a requirement, it could also be used for all kind of shenenigans I'm not sure that other crews on the server would appreciate.

  • @eligibleeel6171 once you get some more experience and see how frustrating it can be for a ship to come back several times you might not relish the thought of adding a larger crew each time (imagine someone posts lfg for pvp player specifically, I have joined myself requests like this and other players have no chance depending on skill difference).

  • Changing ships should be done same as portal hopping or diving to a new server via voyage/raid.

There could be a change crew size option that sends you beneath the waves and you can select a new ship and move resources from one to another. Then bam you emerge on a fresh server with your new ship.

No way would I support changing ships within the same server.

  • I'm okay with the idea, but supplies will always be sticky. Meta will be to load a Galleon, then downgrade to a sloop/brig for extra supplies. So either galleons get supply nerfed or there is a limit to how many starter supplies move. (curseballs, higher fruit, fireworks, meats shouldn't be affected since they aren't starter supplies)

  • Would it "break the game" if you were allowed to change ship and continue your session

Server size prevents this. You could change ship size only if you dive and spawn on a new server.
That the only possible way to do it without breaking.

Also. Plan ahead. If you have friends, ask them when they wanna play. If they say no. Don’t adjust your game plan if they change their minds.

Nobody turns a ship around because they left something behind. Keep going forward.

  • @schwammlgott I do this and buy captain supplies I also dove to revenge of the morningstar to buy extra supplies and loot daggertooth outposts barrels so I have 2x the supps before starting my session!
