Gold Rush Indicator

    A locked thread.
    A good idea.

Could also be used for Gold and Glory and Community Days.

Similar to the server shutdown warnings before updates? Countdown to start (people stacking!!!) and Countdown to end. Maybe a message once an hour that G&G or Comm Day is still going on.

Instead of going 4 menus deep...

  • I’m happy enough to donate a like to a concept like to this.

  • I hate that they locked that thread. It was locked because it was apparently resurrected, but it was only a month old! Threads have never been locked before unless they were AT LEAST 3 months old. Very unsettling, IMO. It allows for good ideas that don't get seen like this to be buried, and that's not good. It also forces us to duplicate threads just to keep the idea alive - we already have 3+ duplicate threads on this very idea alone, and in just as many days...

  • It would be nice to have some sort of in-game indicator of Gold Rush and Gold & Glory. Not a fan of more HUD elements though, but maybe it could be shown in-world somehow.

The whole forum needs work in this regard. I'm not a fan of how they deal with necros, nor how ideas that are terrible get boosted just because they create debate (which is not really the intention of a "feedback & suggestions" forum). Whilst good ideas die away fast, even if they are popular, as they get less replies.

  • Ahoy!

This thread is NOT for feedback around how you think the Forums should be moderated. If you wish to raise any concerns please do so via Support under 'General'.

Necro'ing threads more than 30 days old has always been a rule on the Forums, for the past 6 years. This is to allow new topics the chance to breath and rise to the top - a lot of new players come to the forums and find older threads - we would be constantly battling old threads if we didn't have this rule in place. This is not a new thing or something recent but has always been the case.

With regards to Gold Rush - the times haven't changed since we introduced it - these times are available on our website and on our Discord using the +goldrush command - these times are all localised for you.

The other indicator that you're in gold rush is the visual one - when you sell things the bonus Gold is indicated in the selling price.

Clogging up the UI with notifications twice a day is not ideal but I am happy to feed this back to the team and see what they say.

Small correction: this is not the case. Gold & Glory and Gold Rush bonuses are not indicated as they are regarded as base value. Only bonus that is indicated separately is for Emissaries.

I would say some other in-game indication would be greatly appreciated. The reasons sites like Flotsam's Gold Rush tracker exist is because it's not very well communicated when Gold Rush is active.

  • Definitely, a gold rush indicator would be nice and probably very easy to implement.

  • @realstyli Ah! My apologies - I'll be honest as UK Gold Rush is when I'm working I only ever take advantage of the 1/2am one and I should not be trusted at those times to pay attention outside of 'ooh, GOLD!'

With regards to this thread though - I will raise it to the team in my weekly report, but I imagine this has been raised before.

  • @meroviel

In fairness, you're probably running an Emissary anyway when you do your FOTD? So you'd probably not notice.

I was thinking, to keep it more immersive, maybe the different traders could raise a flag or something similar to indicate Gold Rush is active. Given the game can now display events dynamically, it could be doable?

  • @pithyrumble I appreciate your unique way of resurrecting a locked/necro'd thread

Outside of selling a gem with a static value, I almost never really know if I'm selling during gold rush or not LOL.

Converting time zones and then trying to remember if they're in DLST or if they even have that or if I'm on it and they're not or if I even have to account for it...?

The game clearly knows when it's active vs not...so...just give us a visual outside of having to sell a gem.

  • @meroviel

these times are all localised for you.

They're always in UTC or GMT for me, and being that I live in Daylight Time sometimes, I frequently get the actual time period for Gold Rush wrong. I shouldn't have to google multiple time zones to figure out when gold rush is... lately I've given up and just try to remember if I see the gold bonus.

Personally, I'd love some sort of tell that Gold Rush is active, but what would work just as well for me is for the times shown in game to use the time zone on my computer.

    But I did it 1st! 😑

  • @meroviel lol then why even try to answer if you don't actually know?

No offence intended, but if someone is new (or even experienced) and doesn't happen to know the conversion to UTC or PDT off the top of their head (which is what the menu displays for me in the UK), then that's not really very user friendly. UTC is not always the same time as BST, so telling me the time in UTC is of little use, same for PDT. And Rare's only suggestion is essentially "Google it"?

The game doesn't tell you to check the website and doesn't tell you to visit the Discord and input that command. I'm a day one player and had never even heard of that Discord command before.

This also seems like an odd thing to suggest, because there are already countdown timers in the game for other things. If I want to know when a Season ends, how come I can see that in-game and don't have to go to the website or input some command on Discord? Why is there no continuity between how different time-specific elements are displayed?

There are countdown timers built-in for the ending of Seasons (Season Ends in XX days), Emissary Ledgers and other Adventures/Events. So why can't the Gold Rush in-game menu page just say, for example, "X hours until Gold Rush" or "Gold Rush starts in X hours"? The UI wouldn't need to be clogged up twice a day, as it would just use the existing menu option, but make it much easier to understand.

With a QoL change, someone new (or experienced!) and looking at the Gold Rush menu in-game, would clearly see when the next Gold Rush is, irrespective of timezones and clock changes. And, they wouldn't have to Google it.

As an aside, that thread was not more than 30 days old, so why was it locked? The thread was created on 01/06/22 and the last post before it was updated, was 02/06/22, today is 28/06/22......Perhaps threads need a countdown timer to help mods know when 30 days are up! 😂😂😂 (P.S. This is a joke)

  • This is one of those areas where Rare has trusted players will figure it out for themselves.

They won't. I know because I raised this point over a year ago, and still meet many players who don't know about gold rush, some of them even 1 year+ players.

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/133082/psa-regarding-gold-rush-hour-suggestion-to-change

Granted, many unaware players are new, and probably will eventually learn about gold rush. But probably from someone else. If Gold Rush was adequately common knowledge, those players would have learned about goldrush very quickly, within a few days at most, right up there with cutlass dashing.

Other players will eventually tell them, sure, but many players just chalk up the extra gold to something out of their control, like a bug, not realizing what they are missing. The info is too far buried in the menu, and the timezones really should just be standardized, or just localized within the game itself to the region you are in. Daylight savings in the US presents a unique challenge to telling people exactly when gold rush begins, but it doesn't need to be this way.

Having a prompt, even a minimalist one when turning in will help mentally cue someone into investigating it further. If the text was a different color when turning in, gold maybe, this would probably be enough. Within a day, there would be google articles informing players what the gold text means, whereas now, it is very difficult to figure out why you got extra gold, or even figure out how you should search for something like that.

But the holy grail would be to let players know a gold rush is coming up in-game with a prompt, so they can plan accordingly, either to hold their loot, or prepare for PvP. This would take a bit more finesse to not make intrusive, but would be worth the effort.

For dedicated players, Gold Rush is more than just a nice-to-have boost. It provides structure to turning in and organizing a crew around a set goal. It helps motivate the crew to accomplish more, and provides some strategic choices around which voyage to undertake, or whether we have time for a detour. These are the choices that make the seas feel dynamic, and I want others to experience that same feeling.

I think it would help some new players find some purpose/direction when first setting sail in Sea of Thieves, and which might help them stick with the game long enough to see what it has to offer.

It also incentives crews to hold onto their loot which helps gives PvP meaning.

  • @meroviel said:

This isn't true from my experience - multiple times throughout the year, the time has shifted by an hour. I suspect this, however, is due to the fact that I live in the U.S., where Daylight Savings Time is a thing.

Still, confusing as all get out.

  • I still say a message similar to the "server will shut down in x minutes" would be nice.

"Gold Rush starts in x minutes" shows up 10-15 minutes before. If you load in during gold rush, similar to "Sailing with everyone/Xbox only": "Gold Rush is currently active"

Or "Welcome to Gold and Glory"
    Or "Welcome to Community Day"

  • I totally agree, just a small notification.

Or maybe even in the menu, when checking reputation and season progress.

  • I guess I need to buy a time zone wall board of clocks.
I never know when special events end or begin.
Im always wrong when the server is going down for maintenance.

  • @pithyrumble

    Hello!

I would like to add something: if server shutdown was announced on the game's menu by some hours ago( so you won't start long time voyages to end up being unable to sell rare and valuable loot you took much time to collect), it would be greatly appreciated!
Instead of only giving the information on the website or social medias... When i want to play the game, i actually just want to be playing the game.
I don't want to be forced to go to a website or social media everytime before starting the game, just because if i don't i may end up screwed because of a server shutdown i was'nt aware about.
Or at least, if the in-game notification could come earlier before the server actually shuts down, it may give players some more time to prepare for the end of their adventure!

Being unable to sell some good loot i hardly collected, just because the game suddenly tells me i have 15 minutes left to:
1-finish my voyage/quest( like finding some treasures on a huge map/ finding the locations for some riddles...)
2-bring all the loot on my ship
    3-sail to the nearest outpost
4-fight someone already at this outpost because i had no time to go anywhere else to sell
    5-sell all the loot...
...Is the most annoying and frustrating situation i encountered on this game!! And it happened twice to me recently.

This is just impossible to accomplish all of this in 15 minutes if you were in the middle of your journey!
Why would'nt this information be given way earlier in the session, or even better, in the game's menu?? This is some very bad communication in my opinion!
Many games just let you know this kind of stuff easily by showing the information in game's menu. It does'nt look like it's difficult to implement such a feature.

I really hope to see some better in-game communication for Sea of Thieves. I love this game, but communication is'nt only about making good trailers to increase the hype.

Yesterday, I saw a notification on the top right hand side of the screen on a red background during login. So it is already in game and has been for some time now.

  • @lem0n-curry

Well, i never saw that yet, i'll try to pay more attention next time. But i did'nt even know you could have this type of messages during login. So it does'nt seem very obvious to me.

And by the way, as i'm not english, i'm not sure to perfectly understand what you mean exactly by loging? Do you talk about the loading screen when you start an adventure? Do you talk about the loading screen that comes up right after you press start before accessing the game's menu? Or even about connecting to your account?

I think this kind of information should be easily noticed, so maybe having it in the middle of the screen, like in the "news" square, may be more appropriate. That's my opinion at least.

Thanks for giving me this information anyway!

If I remember correctly it's where you can press "Play", with the What's New and Emporium pictures / buttons. So after you press escape (on PC) to stop the introduction clip (the one with the map) - which is after you click Start Game from the first screen.
It's before you select Adventure, A Pirate's Life or Maiden Voyage.

Most of the time I do notice it, but click on Play before actual reading it :).

  • @PithyRumble I agree that there should be an indication of Gold Rush on the game launch UI, but I also think that there needs to be some sort of indication in-game. Because you may already be out on an adventure and Gold Rush may become active during your session.

The in-game indicator should not obscure the player's view, such as a popup or messaging item. My idea would be to add some sort of indicator around the helm area of your ship, as this is an area a lot of use pirates spend a lot of time during our sessions. Not sure what it should be, perhaps magically a gold pouch shows up on the helm perch with the words 'Gold Rush' all glowy and glittery? Or the compass on the helm perch has some sort of treatment and message to indicate 'Gold Rush' is active?

Not sure of the best method, but yes I agree there needs to be some sort of indicator on the loading screen and in-game for 'Gold Rush' and any other time limited currency based rewards.

I've seen in-game warnings at the 1-hour mark.

  • @lem0n-curry
All right, thanks for making it this accurate, i'll try to watch out for this next time i start the game! But i still think they could increase the in-game countdown duration, like if they tell you the server will be down in about 30/45 minutes would be better for those who miss the main menu notification! ^^

  • @galactic-geek
Oh really? I wonder if i did'nt get some display issues for this then, i'm pretty sure i never saw that on my screen, and i don't often go afk so... õ_ô I would have been glad if i saw this! :'D

Could you tell how much this 1-hour left notification lasts?
