does rare understand the difference between "game files" and "local configuration files"?

  • I'm sure you're all aware of the specific file I'm talking about; engine.ini. Why is this considered a "game file"? Even modifying settings in there for the purpose of boosting your FPS is considered "modifying game files" and it being "against TOS" is always backed up by the same misused quote from the Microsoft Service Agreement:

"You agree that you will not attempt to modify any Digital Goods obtained through any of the Services for any reason whatsoever, including for the purpose of disguising or changing ownership or source of the Digital Goods. Microsoft or the owners of the Digital Goods may, from time to time, remove Digital Goods from the Services without notice."

Engine.Ini. Is. Not. A. Game. File. - It is an Unreal Engine configuration file. I want to know why the engineering team at Rare is not having a conversation with the Deckhands/CS team about what is a game file that is not property of Rare or Microsoft and not bound by anything in the Microsoft/Xbox/SoT Terms of Services and what is a configuration file that can be edited at any time by people using their PC for whatever reason they want to.

    Thoughts...?

  • @sussybakastyle Quick side-note, this is clearly documented in the UE4 docs as a settings config file - "Unreal Engine 4 allows one to control various performance-related features through the FSystemSettings class, which is initialized from the [SystemSettings] section of Engine.ini."

  • My advice is to use the settings menu Rare gave us. 120 FOV won’t be returning unless it’s in there.

  • So.... you want them to simply just call it cheating instead? How will that change anything at all? It still won't be allowed and it will still remain bannable. My conclusion is thus that all you are doing is trying to stir the pot.

  • Stop altering settings outside the game. That includes injection or modification of files or fiddling with engine ini's. It is a violation of the agreement signed. Even if that file is not specifically owned by Rare/Microsoft/Xbox it still has affect on their property, in this particular case.

This is an online game, altering of files is a bannable offense.

I would. I'd call it cheating and then ban them twice as hard.

A violation is a violation no matter how it is viewed, IMO.

  • Ahoy!

Is it a file that affects the game? If so then it is a game file. It is not something to split hairs over and not a position we will be arguing. Anything that is a file that affects the game is still covered under the ToS. Altering it in anyway breaks that Tos that you agreed to when purchasing the game.

    Dropping anchor here.

    Thanks,
