Speed boost curse

  • A cursed item found in barrels in a similar way you find cursed cannon balls.

The item is a consumable that when used on a ship causes a speed boost and the reason why skeleton ships dont rely on the wind.

The sails will have a ghostly ferryman style aura around them whilst this is active alerting any ship being chased that they have used the speed curse. A ship being chased can see they used this curse from the sails therefore can use a speed curse if they have one to maintain their distance.

This means that if you stock up and spend the time gathering all the items on islands and flotsams you could be in a position to chase a ship and catch up to them quickly instead of a long drawn out chase.

On the other hand this also means if you stocked up and dont want to be caught by players you can easily escape.

Crews who are equally stocked up etc will provide an interesting chase indeed.

Whoever has the most speed boosts is the fastest ship. This will drastically change the ship dynamic.

Speed boosts are still RNG like cursed cannon balls but it means that having preparation and actually stocking your ship up will massively help you out. So a speed boost is not going to be massively common but it will allow a stocked up ship to do some honest piracy, even against a sloop sailing against the wind!

Before you worry too about this being too OP.
Lets not forget we still have anchor balls etc and lots od other cursed balls so this doesnt mean you cant escape.

  • @daringclarky I am against this, we already have enough "magical items", the ccb...doesn't need more of these
Also this would create unbalanced/unfair situations for example with a sloop against a galleon

Not if the sloop is more stocked up than the gally.
I think this would be a fun thing to have.

Like. I mentioned too. Sloop can just anchor ball them. By time they raise their speed boost will have expired. They aint gonna have tons and tons of these things.

  • @daringclarky and if the sloop just started and got none, it's not even possible anymore then to outrun them

Any ship thats just started is at a disadvantage. This is just a fact.

When they get sunk they will spawn at a different part of the map and will have the opportunity to gather resources to escape or take revenge.

    Its not OP at all.

Anyways its fine you disagree. Im not here to change your mind.
I think it would be really cool.

Every ship just started is in a disadvantage when they fight, but not when they flee...with this feature they have in both situations a disadvantage...

    Im happy with that.
Game will be tense to start but get easier.

Its not like you always see a ship st the start anyways. Sometimes you dont even see a ship for a good while and youve already done a voyage.

Sometimes you see a ship and they have no interest in pvp.

Sometimes a ship wants to fight.
    So fight!

So i dont think this is an issue.

A new ship will always have a tough time against a stocked up ship.

Whats to say they dont find a speed boost right there at the outpost?

    It could go either way.

  • @daringclarky sure you got good points...anyway, I'm against this

  • @schwammlgott Me, too. Anyone can simply say to the downsides of a bad idea, “I’m fine with that.” Doesn’t make it a good idea. This eliminates, for a time, one of the main balancing measures between ships. That’s a hard no from me.

  • There is already an in game method for boosting speed for a few moments. Just stock up well at forts and you will have everything you need to do this.

  • I don't dislike the idea, but I think it would take away all the strategy that is used in the game today in a chase. Particularly, I prefer an idea that I saw here on the forum, but I didn't find the link, where an item is used that changes the wind direction.
