This has bugged me since I started playing, but since I've seen no mention of it since pets were introduced, I thought I'd give it a try.
Why not give us the ability to give a name to our characters? We now can name pets, but not ourselves?
I've been using that "random pirate name" feature because I hate seeing pirates called vanessa1994 or mfrgd123, but having a random name each session doesn't seem to do the trick for me, especially when my female pirate is called John or the old man in my crew is Larinna, or whatever. I get this feature is useful for streaming, though.
Anyway, I would love to be able to name my character the same way people name their pets.
Pirate names
@jakit0 I think it's a good idea but would need an option for others to select to see what you named yourself or gamertag for reporting purposes. But cool idea and could work if there was a menu option for it like I described.
@jakit0 Do what i did, change your microsoft name.
I am Sweltering Nick! I changed my name during the Devil's roar update, and thought, because of my personality, i have a tendency to be intense, and the Devil's roar cosmetics, that it was a perfect name for me as a pirate. xD

If that's ok for you, that's fine, but I like my gamertag and it's not like I use it just for Sea Of Thieves. And besides, it isn't free to change it (at least it wasn't last time I checked).
Anyway, what I really want is a game populated by pirates with their own pirate names, I wasn't talking just about me.Okay, let's for a moment assume that you can give your pirate a name just like you can with your pet, and for the sake of argument, let's assume that others can already see it too.
This means that I can attack, humiliate, and sink someone without fear of retaliation or retribution. Why? Well, I can already swap out my ship, clothing, vanity, tool, pet, and weapon cosmetics. Now, by your logic, I can now change my pirate's name too. This means, theoretically, I can sink an opposing ship, change everything and pretend to be a completely different pirate and make an alliance with the same pirates I just sunk without them ever having a clue.
That's absolutely DIABOLICAL.
This is already largely doable, especially if the attack was stealthy enough, but having the ability to also change your name at will just puts the final nail in the coffin and seals the deal, as it were. It's the perfect camouflage; the perfect outlet for trolling.
Heck, you could change your name and appearance to duplicate that of another pirate, so while you may not be able to change your name's color, it may still be enough to make them blink or do a double-take. You could literally hide in plain sight by doing an emote while pretending to be who you aren't.
Even if they do catch on, I'm just 1 change away from doing it all over again.
This may sound like a lot of fun, and actually probably would be, but it would be so abusive to the point of effectively breaking the game. Nobody would trust anyone - more so than they already do now.
@Galactic-Geek
Ok, maybe I explained that the wrong way, since, the way you put it, it seems you can alter a pet's name anytime. I don't own pets, don't know how they actually work, I just used them to state that you can give them a name, but not your character.
I was going for a permanent pirate name, chosen at creation (or at first login for existing characters, if this feature were to be introduced).
Sorry for the misunderstanding.@jakit0 Okay, well with the ability to change so much about your pirate already, having it be permanent kind of ruins the illusion of becoming a different kind of pirate. For example, at any given time, I can make my pirate look like a Cowboy or even an ancient Greek. It would be unfortunate if I made a great cowboy name, but then wanted to change to the ancient Greek appearance but couldn't change my name off of "Wild Bill" for example. It's like if @Sweltering-Nick couldn't be, well, Sweltering Nick...
@Galactic-Geek
I would personally love to have a few slots for characters to solve that issue, but that's another matter.
I get your point, but right now, your cowboy would be named "Galactic Geek" (or whatever your gamertag is), Ramsey's Ghost or Captain Chicken. I mean, right now, names are not exactly defining the character in any way. Giving pirates a permanent name would define them in (at least) one instance. Since you would be the one choosing the name, you can decide the "amount of definition", by calling it Wild Bill, Bill, Billy Bones, William Throgmorton III... whatever.
But we can complicate things a bit by adding a list of "titles" or "nicknames", if that would help. That way, your name could be "Bill", and you could change the prefix to be "Wild Bill" or "Sweltering Bill" or "Plundering Bill" or whatever. Those could even be tied to commendations, like regular titles, or be bought with gold, or... I don't know, I don't think names would hurt the game.@galactic-geek said in Pirate names:

Read my suggestion above. I said perhaps leave a menu option to display people's pirate name, gamertag, or both. So if I select show gamertag I will only see everyone's gamertag no matter how many times you change your pirate name.
@galactic-geek funny enough I already do all that swapping anyway especially if I got ambushed or beat. I'll swap my entire pirate and ship out. It has worked multiple times especially when it was ship to ship combat.
I like the idea. Ive had my gamer tag since the day the 360 dropped so I really wouldnt want to switch something ive had that long. But my pirate is more about firing cannons then playing instruments so i would love a more appropriate name.
