Pirate title vs reputation

  • I was thinking about this the other day. The pirate title is about a pirate's history, but it doesn't really tell you anything about a pirate's playstyle. And unlike our own real life reputations, we can't generally pick and choose what it is. It's determined by how others perceive us. So, since we're all pirate's in game, we should have some sort of reputation developed.

What I would propose is a wheel of adjectives we can pick for pirates we recently interacted with and that builds our reputation across the sea. Sure, there will be a lot of people who pick random adjectives without any thought, but ideally a consensus would occur.

For example, a pirate issues the familiar battle cries of "We're Friendly!" and "Let's Form an Alliance!" and next thing you know, they're delivering a keg to your ship, lit and all...well, you vote their reputation as "Lyin" or something similar. On the other hand, if someone honors that you could use the adjectives "Trustworthy". If they attack on sight, maybe you call them "Bloodthirsty" or if they snuck onboard when you weren't looking "Sneaky". Maybe you earn a reputation in one form or another and pick your own adjective based on appropriate synonyms.

And of course, just because you have a reputation in one way shape or form doesn't mean you have to act like it all the time. Just because you have a reputation as Backstabbin Bill the Buccaneer, maybe you do actually become helpful to other pirates over time and turn that reputation around and become "Benevolent Bill"

I think you should be able to have choice in your titles. Tools not rules. Maybe have an option to display your description title, but also keep the old ones.

  • Pirates lie and deceive. I feel a title that says they are a liar would prevent that pirate from being able to lie or deceive. There are stories from pirates in the past flying friendly flags until they got close enough to rob them. That wouldn’t have worked in real life if they had the word liar written all over them.

They game is about decisions you make. Word of advice never trust anyone and set rules. Always be keeping an eye on everybody and everything. Never let anyone get to close. If you accept their friendliness and let them come up to you With a keg that is a you problem. I’m assuming you trusted the wrong person and got sank.

  • I like this idea. It has a Dark souls-esce feel with how "helpful hints" would be posted and then voted. Like I really like this idea. I do feel it should be unlocked only if you are a pirate legend or some type of threshold. This way the title makes some sense unless you are thinking of just doing one word type titles. This is a great community idea and brings out the fact you depend on the SoT's community to play and live this game.

  • @grezar777 people shouldn’t need hints in this game. Make a decision of character use your gut instinct. Then don’t trust anyone. After that decision is made keep an eye on them. Anytime someone says they are friendly I still keep my distance.

Another issue is people shouldn’t be able to decide your title. Anytime people have an option at a survey they never feel the need unless they are unhappy. Most titles would be based off of anger.

I can’t remember the saying it goes something like “keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer”

  • love the idea, hope they do something like this eventually even though mine may not be the most approachable title :D LOL

Edit - As long as the title is only viewable from the distance names appear now. Gives you a split second decision to make.

  • I want mine to read Blind swashbuckler.

Oh, believe me, when I see "We're Friendly!!" I immediately prep for a fight. But, as much as there are pirates that deliberately flew friendly flags to deceive, there are just as many that had reputations known far and wide and their sails never masked this. I mean, we all know reputations of some of the infamous pirates during the golden age of piracy, aka Captain Morgan, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Black Bart-and the reputations of various other seafarers like say, Francis Drake or other privateers that worked for a sovereign.

What I'm thinking is, at least in terms of say Treasure Island, you'd know that Captain Smollet is generally good natured and trustworthy, but Long John Silver is someone devious who you wouldn't trust. As pirates, we would know about their lore based on what other pirates have whispered in taverns. As it is now, all pirate legends are completely anonymous in the SoT canon.

  • @doctorfork it’s a game called sea of thieves based around pirating. You need a title on a player to tell you that? pirates do have reputations. I’m sure the name summit and pace may ring a bell. Giving someone an unchangeable title damns them to play the game that style for life. A tattoo or a mark would be a better idea cuz u can hide it. The name of the pirate was infamous not the appearance. So you get a million votes saying ur a liar. You have to get a million good votes for Neutral or it resets? Just like fast food restaurants people don’t take the survey when they have a good experience they expect it. People are mainly going to vote out of anger and get bad titles like liar. And then you got people who will give you bad titles on purpose. Because you don’t trust people and are afraid to take chances you want titles to say if you should trust them or not.

That's a fair concern that people would simply call everyone a liar. I have higher hopes for the game's community to be accurate about their interactions.

  • @doctorfork I edited my last post to include the game is a pirate game called sea of thieves. You need a title to tell you that? Make good judgment and let your skill do the talking. If it gets to a point where you get tricked cuz someone lied then learn from it and don’t let it happen again. Also the higher hopes you have I can’t tell you how many people in this game I’ve killed whether I went after them or they came at me called me a cheater, hacker, and spammed my inbox with vulgar language. You can’t judge people by 1 session encounter. Some days I fish, some days I help new players out, other I sink ships. I have even snuck on ships and forced my treasure on them. And then the one time you decide to sink someone and take their treasure they call you a griefer.

  • This wouldnt help me old son, at the minute it says pirate legend above my head..... now the reason it says that is cos i put it there.... now the reason i put it there was in the hope that any potential enemies would take a butchers at it and think 'art a c##k linnet, this fellas experienced, best be careful'.... now the reason i want them to think that is because if i had a truthful statement above my head it would probably read ' this bloke is on an athena and hes really rubbish at pvp so rob him blind!!!'...... i hope that conveys what im trying to say accordingly.

  • @nikjw thanks for the laugh enjoyed the comment

  • The way titles are presented now is how I prefer it. Titles are for showcasing your accomplishments, not to showcase your style of play.
