I was thinking about this the other day. The pirate title is about a pirate's history, but it doesn't really tell you anything about a pirate's playstyle. And unlike our own real life reputations, we can't generally pick and choose what it is. It's determined by how others perceive us. So, since we're all pirate's in game, we should have some sort of reputation developed.
What I would propose is a wheel of adjectives we can pick for pirates we recently interacted with and that builds our reputation across the sea. Sure, there will be a lot of people who pick random adjectives without any thought, but ideally a consensus would occur.
For example, a pirate issues the familiar battle cries of "We're Friendly!" and "Let's Form an Alliance!" and next thing you know, they're delivering a keg to your ship, lit and all...well, you vote their reputation as "Lyin" or something similar. On the other hand, if someone honors that you could use the adjectives "Trustworthy". If they attack on sight, maybe you call them "Bloodthirsty" or if they snuck onboard when you weren't looking "Sneaky". Maybe you earn a reputation in one form or another and pick your own adjective based on appropriate synonyms.
And of course, just because you have a reputation in one way shape or form doesn't mean you have to act like it all the time. Just because you have a reputation as Backstabbin Bill the Buccaneer, maybe you do actually become helpful to other pirates over time and turn that reputation around and become "Benevolent Bill"
