Some way to get back the Old Sea of Theives?

  • This is a post made from nostalgia.

    A few nights ago a crew mate and I were just roaming the seas. Doing a random Tall Tale while just gathering whatever loot came our way.

    An hour into our session we saw something we haven't seen since BEFORE the Cursed Crew Event realize almost a year ago. Cursed Crews is what killed it back then.

    There was multiple ships at a fort........FIGHTING. 3 Galleons and a Brig.

    We rubbed our eyes because it HAD to be a mirage right? Scurvy playing with our minds?? It wasn't. It was just that. Ships fighting.

    1 Galleon - Brig - Alliance
    1 Galleon
    1 Galleon
    1 Sloop - This is us.

    We went in there and we had the time of our lives. After 2 hours of constant fighting and sinking all 4 ships and them coming back for revenge. They stopped coming back and the fun pretty much stopped. We sighed dejectedly and just went back to sailing around.


    What I want? I don't know really. Another faction maybe?? Call it fort Conqueurs?

    Make forts spawn every 4 hours again? Make special forts that spawn every 4 hours at the original 3 spots? Keel Haul, Shark Fin, Crows Nest?

    This idea is really from nostalgia and a sense of longing for the times when ships would server hop to find forts and you would fight over a single fort for 4 to even 8 hours of just constantly battling. 3 to 4 ships in combat over a single fort.

    Where you would roll up to a fort and tell your crew mates "Hey we have to finish this before people start server hopping in" and you are against the clock with eyes darting all around while in the crows nest. Scared but excited. Hoping no one shows up but at the same time hoping they do.

    Finally getting that fort loot onto your boat after everyone is beaten and defeated.

    This might have been better in the tavern tales. Maybe some of those that experienced this will know what I'm talking about and can better express what I want to say.

    Sorry for a bunch of nothing everyone. Like I said nostalgia.

    Maybe. Like an event that has no time limit? Whoever turns it in wins? Hmmm.....maybe

    In adventure it was always Russian roulette if someone comes in time or not while you are doing the fort. Maybe it was 1 ship, maybe it was 4 ships. The Arena just feels as if something is missing for me, as if its taking away something.....that sense of dread when you see a ship on the horizon? Then that sense of dread turning into bloodthirst as you prepare to defend your booty??

    I enjoy the Arena right now but its nothing like what we used to have with the forts.

    Meh I'm probably just being a whiny baby honestly. But thanks for the suggestion.

  • I agree forts spawn rather quickly and I love the idea of a mega fort every few hours ( honestly that's what I thought the DR fort would be). However a big issue with forts is that people dont need to do them anymore once you hit PL...and most people are now legends.

    You need to give pirates a reason to do a fort. Put rare fish in them...give them cosmetics to spend that horde of gold they've been stock piling.

    Give them a reason and they will battle over it like the days of old.

    Completely agree but with what though? What type of faction, what type of loot? It would have to be completely dependent on the skins they release and even then the cosmetics have to be worth it. For a game that centers around cosmetics they don't release a ton of cosmetics.

  • Nothing lasts forever.

    Maybe for players that no longer have anything to grind for the forts are no longer interesting. I still do them but only because it’s still the fastest way to progress. Although even for me some forts are a drag.

    Time for something new? Perhaps mystical islands that appear out of mist.

    Rare don’t gate content. This is a problem once people have played a long time. For how long can someone keep doing the same thing.

    I do not need any of this incentives, I'm fine with the fun it is to do forts and compete there.

    @Dadiodude I can do that forever , but I don't play every day regardless of the level or rewards.
    As long as it has some immersive character and is fun.

    When Arena was introduced I thought they spawn some ships and all head to one island or Fort full of treasure and then everybody fights for the most booty.

  • @xultanis-dragon IMO the reason forts are so uncontested now is due to two major factors.

    1. The 5 minute cooldown (originally ~3 hours). When players see a contested fort they are more inclined to let it go because they know that they can get another one at any point.
    2. The "power creep" that has come into the game with more valuable treasure. Originally, the most valuable item in the game was the Stronghold Skull (technically Athena chests were in the game at launch but no one was PL). So people gave everything for forts. Now there are a billion different treasures (Ashen, mermaid gems, Skeleton Captain) that can be obtained rather easily that reward the player handsomely.

    I don't think the respawn on forts should go back to 3 hours, but it should definitely be increased if Rare wants the forts to become meaningful PvP encounters again. They should also be increased in difficulty (in a meaningful way beyond buffing skeleton hp + damage + accuracy) if they want to encourage alliances around them.

    At this point players probably won't be happy about nerfing gold rewards from items so the fort needs to be worth the extra difficulty to counter point #2. I'm not really in favor of buffing fort items because they are already top tier, but perhaps some other solution exists.

  • Increasing the rate that forts pop up at was one of the biggest mistakes Rare has made.
