Value of recommendation letters

  • I've been wondering for a while why the recommendation letters for e.g. Rank 2 have the same price like a rank 50 letter. The amount of required reputation for reaching level 50 is a completly different dimension than reaching level 2!

That's why I come up with this idea:
The price for a reputation letter depends on the rank it would allow.

These are my suggestions for a fair price:

    • Price for reaching rank 2-10: 10 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 11-15: 15 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 16-20: 20 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 21-25: 25 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 26-30: 30 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 31-35: 45 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 36-40: 60 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 41-45: 80 Doubloons per letter
    • Price for reaching rank 46-50: 100 Doubloons per letter

Please let me know, if you agree with my system or not and feel free to share other possible prices. :D

  • @lord-mevolent I think actually they should be more for balancing, but 120 per high level is a bit much because of the value and non-recoverability of doubloons and really the original price partially reflected this, and yeah I can see the value of having it scale like this but it still just raises the price for far beyond reasonable for any purchase. Also I bought all of my levels beyond 45 with doubloons and I'm sure many others did the same so it would change the actual challenge of those last few grindy levels too much. Point being that changing rewards that people have already gained by a lot is not very good for keeping people happy with the system.
I think 50 doubloons for letters above level 40 would be a fair enough system

oops this was a mistake I don't really understand how this works, read my second one I guess

  • @wilhelkus Yeah, 120 is very expensive - okay - but I think 100 is fair enough. Keep in mind how long you have to grind to achieve the last levels (Especially Hunter's Call and Sea Dogs). I shouldn't be a mainstream thing to buy the last levels. You can do it, but you have to pay a lot for the saving of time.

  • @rip-chongy Then we need a higher price too. 75 Doubloons?

I believe Rare left it this way so people could reach Legend sooner and still be able to purchase those time limited cosmetics easily enough. If you increase the cap per level now it would probably will turn off a lot of now regular players.

  • Why would the letters of recommendation need changing? If you buy them at low levels you're mostly cheating yourself in that it's easy to level up and if you're buying them at higher level you get a better value.

It's not like anything is wrong with the system as it is now. There's no power gain so there's nothing wrong with the price as is.

  • @rip-chongy It costs 30 Doubloons now. With my 1.045 Doubloons I could buy 34 levels which is op in my opinion.

  • I remember when a L.O.R gave only a third to two thirds of a level. people bought a bunch at that and were kinda upset when the switch was made to a full level feeling they were ripped off. others felt the system had no place, mostly those who had already became P.L. as it stands I haven't bought bilge rat gear for some time, but if you up a level or two your missing out on the ltd cosmetics as a set. people are so focused on leveling up and forget cosmetics are more the point of the game over leveling up. only 45 - 50 is worth the L.O.R, no change is necessary I think

How is that OP? Levels don't mean anything. You aren't gaining power in anything which is the opposite of OP.

The only reason you'd want to change how purchasing levels works is because you have some kind of emotional investment in your character's levels and you don't want other players to advance in a quicker fashion which is stupid for a game like this where whatever level another pirate is has no bearing on your ability to compete with them.

  • @norloc But the last five level for 150 Doubloons in total is a joke. Either you collect the cosmetics or you buy reputation.

  • I agree with @D3ADST1CK and others that have said that this doesn't really need changing because levels mean literally nothing. No one should really care if someone actually delivered the half billion crates for Merchant Alliance to get 50 or did a ton of Bilge Rat challenges for MA 50; they still did something.

However, if this change were to happen, the letters should be changed to simply give a flat amount of rep. This completely removes the need to balance the cost of the letters for different levels. It will be automatically balanced at all levels due to the fact that different levels need increasingly more rep to attain.

I also agree will people that have stated that changing this pretty much shafts the newer/incoming population, since anyone who has already bought letters will have gotten an insanely better deal.

  • I cant imagine caring about this. Somebody else's rep with any faction is of absolutely no consequence to me, nor how fast they earn it. It has no bearing on my journey at all. Nor does it devalue the grind I've been on since day one because it doesn't change the awesome times I've had with my friends doing it.

Everyone just needs to stop worrying about things that dont affect them outside of their feelings.

  • Whilst this may be a good suggestion, I think it's rooted in the thinking that PL status is exclusive - this isn't really the case, as it's the end goal for the vast majority of the playerbase. People who buy their way through the final ranks have still spent a long, long time acquiring the doubloons to do so.

Mind you, I say this as someone who bought his last 13 ranks to PL; if I didn't have the option to skip the final grind, then I would likely have stopped playing, as my crew at the time consisted of three extremely capable legends who unfortunately weren't anywhere near as bothered about loot as I was. I think we should let people play the game the way they want to!
