3 man Brig or 3 man Galleon?

  • Which do you prefer to run and why?

I ask because I've been finding myself in a lot of trios with my friends as of late. We've been using the Brig exclusively, but I often find it very fragile. it takes on water so fast that a duo Sloop has a 50/50 chance of killing us. Plus, you aren't going to really be able to hide it, as it's too big to fit in hiding spots a Sloop can hide in, and its quite tall so you can see it a fair distance away.

So while I know a Galleon works best with four, I'm really curious whether I should try a three man Galleon instead of a Brig. It seems tankier and as I pointed out, neither ship can really hide well, so I don't really see a disadvantage over the Brig that much, even if it's a little unwieldy, but so is the Brig to me. Plus players seem to run away from a Galleon, but not a Brig, as far as I've seen.

    Your own thoughts?

  • I would say a brig. If you get in a serious fight on a galley you will need one man bailing and one repairing. The distance is to far for one person to bucket water. Which leaves one man up top to drive, defend the ship, shoot cannons etc.
With a brig you will at least have enough ppl to fill the ship roles effieciently.
And is much easier to keep afloat when someone dies or gets knocked off the boat.
Plus the brig maneuvers much better, which helps in all situations.
But if you plan to avoid pvp all the way, the galley will get u away faster

  • @mrat13 I have to agree with @NWO-Azcrack. The brig is pretty fragile, but it's way more manageable with a three-person crew. The galleon is a tank but steers like a cow, takes forever to weigh anchor or trim the sails, and sinks like a rock if you don't take good care of her. The brig is relatively nimble, very fast, and quite capable with four guns. When the brig was introduced, my three-woman crew jumped aboard and never looked back.

  • Normally I'd say go for the galleon and get a fourth player, but if you're only going with three I'd take the brig. Now, getting around and voyaging with a three man galleon is no problem, but in a ship battle that fourth man makes all the difference.

  • @mrat13 Brigantine definitely.
If you find yourself in a battle, 3-men Galleon seems a bit too much to handle.

The AI on Galleons (Kraken, Meg, Skelly ships) are way more aggressive than against Brigantine and if it happens for you to lose 1 or 2 men, your ship is doomed.

I'd go with Brigantine, that is the main reason why it was created, to fill the gap existing in a 3-men Galleon.

  • I favor the Galleon myself. I'm really used to it and sailing it with 3 people is quite easy (we had no other options when the game launched).
It's also a lot more sterdy, if you do ashen athena's it's almost a pre to take the galleon as it rarely takes hits below deck from a vulcano making it the only ship able to just sit in range of a vulcano and take it.

  • The brig and gally fill up at almost the same speed. I belive the gally actually sinks a little faster. All of the ships are more or less equally fragile. For PvP, I'd use the brig. For errands, I'd roll the Gally.

  • We prefer the galleon over te brig when sailing with 3. Due to the "tankiness" and being used to the galleon as crew of 4 (we know what time we keep "drifting" after we hoist the sails etc. With the brig we just keep crashing into stuff >.<)

  • I was happy when the brig came because most of the time me and my crew were only 3 guys and im allergic against the galleon so.
    Brig, all the way baby!

  • Brigantine for the win!

    • She's fast
    • She turns on a dime
    • She can be bailed from a single spot without having to ever move
    • She's easy to handle with a 2 OR 3 man crew
  • 3 crew Brigantine is arguably a superior Ship to the 4 crew Galleon as an over-all performer for all elements of this game. So a 3 crew Galleon doesn't even come into contention.

If you have 2 friends take the Brigantine. She is fragile but super easy to fix and bail. 1 person can sail her and fix/bail leaving the other two crew members free to do other things.

If you have 3 friends the Galleon is obviously a must. But with 4 crew it's a great Ship too.

  • 3 Man Brigantine over a 3 Man galleon, no contest at all.
3-Man galleon is just way to hamstrung while the Brigantine can still easily kick butt with even just a crew of two.
I've even sailed a Brigantine Solo and kicked the butts of 3-man Brig crews. :P
