@enformatico maybe they shot theyr own gpb...you can shoot through the floor of the crow's nest...
Destroying own main mast – how to
Exactly as @schwammlgott said. You were dealing with smart pirates. If you can't shoot the guy who's about to drop the kegs then just shoot the kegs.

You should still be able to climb the mast even when it's down.
This, unless the ship is sunk or scuttled, you can still climb the mast, whatever weird angle it is facing once knocked down. Quite funny to see someone crawling sideways on a broken mast!

Thanks for the helpful replies guys.
It definitely wasn't a GPB - although I was not aware you could shoot through the nest's floor - thanks for the tip I'll be sure to try that :)
As for climbing the mast, once it went down I could not move myself up or down. I had to jump down and was promptly killed. I did make a run for the mid deck before being killed and their ship was still up. Actually, I don't think my guys even got a single shot away due to many cursed being fired.
I'll write the not being able to climb the mast down to my error, I've never been in that position before so maybe I did something wrong there.@HisDarkestFear - ah, now that is possible. Although it seems very unlikely seeing as we didn't fell their mast.
Actually now that I think about it...they chased us full sail for a few minutes so unless they were ridiculously cautious players and had previously felled their mast and were manually keeping it up....?seems a real long shot to me.
So the bottom line here is - unless you GPB your own mast or have it destroyed otherwise by X enemies, I'm not missing an option / button to simply break my own ship's mast?
That's good to know, glad I'm not missing something there. If their mast had been broken and they re-raised the mast up, they can’t lower their sails without collapsing the mast again. Unless they repair the base of the mast in three places with wooden planks.
So from what you described if they had full sails down and their mast didn’t collapse during your cat and mouse chase, then it definitely wasn’t caused by them lowering sails on a broken mast.
Therefore only logical explanation is they shot their gunpowder barrels in the crows nest, or were hit by a gunpowder keg down bottom of ship, or possibly - not sure - maybe a nicely placed cannonball can collapse the mast.
Maybe you couldn’t climb their mast due to lag. Sometimes I can’t climb ladders when a server lags. I’m stuck in the same spot. Maybe you jumped off too soon thinking you were definitely stuck when lag was the cause.
