More Cosmetics, Less Dripfeeding

  • I'd like to begin this post by expressing that I really love this game and appreciate all of Rare's efforts to continuously deliver quality content to build on what makes this game special. This post is not intended to be rude or demanding, but rather it comes from a place of constructive criticism because I am very appreciative of the amount of care that goes into this game and it's community.

All games and their developers have flaws. They do. I think one of Rare's problems with this game is the practice of dripfeeding cosmetics. This has more of an impact in this particular game since cosmetics are our only form of progression.

I understand that they can't just dump everything they have at one time, and some dripfeeding is healthy here, but I think it gets taken too far in this game. The latest testament to that fact is the amount of outrage that occurred over the Gold Hoarder curse change - people want so desperately to have more options and ways to be more unique in this game.

Additionally, look at how long it's taken to release Pirate Legend Cosmetics. It's been more than a year and the weapons just made it to the game but yet the set still isn't even complete. The Ghost set hasn't seen any additions since July last year when the ship cosmetics were added. It doesn't look optimistic that we'll see any brand new Pirate Legend sets within the next year and a half at this rate.... but even a color alt of the Legendary set would be nice!

We know that color alts for every set exist (per the Reddit post by Drew I screenshotted). I personally feel that Rare should increase the rate that cosmetics are released, because the current rate feels like they're indulging too much in dripfeeding. There should be more color alts available for more mixing and matching capability. People would get more chances to make themselves a bit more unique. There are plenty of commendations in game that have no rewards associated with them!

I made a topic about the game lacking cosmetics a while back and it got thrown to the side. I must say that I fully agree with you and I hope we'll see a lot of new cosmetics in the near future.

  • @lt-swag-johnson

I wanted to hold my breath on this to see what they added for Anniversary, but I just don't feel that the additions were significant enough in terms of cosmetics. The Tall Tales rewards are fantastic, don't get me wrong, but no complete sets there. The Glorious Sea Dog set doesn't even have pants, a belt, or boots... The only complete thing they added was the Parrot set.

I really hope they decide to do a bit of overhaul on their thinking when it comes to releasing cosmetics which happen to be our only progression.

  • I've said it before and I will say it again...

I want my galleon crew to be able to play pirate dress up all night and for nobody to have tried on the same outfit at any point.

  • @phantaxus

Absolutely! Could you imagine how nice it would be if we even got 1 color alt for each set right now?

    Not bad

I rather see an option to switch colours like the hair dyes work now. The uninspired recoloured outfits and weapons or just there to clog up the chest.

  • this has gone on long enough!

And cosmetics all need to be repriced to give sets meaning and value according to their quality! Bilge rat set more easily earnable with lower lvl voyage loot, etc. giving gold more meaning aswell as the cosmetics.

  • @lt-swag-johnson

I think that color alts would actually be nice. Take something like the Bonecrusher set for example... The red/black/brown color scheme looks nice, but there have been times where I wanted to mix the bones look with certain sets but the colors clashed too much, but would've worked if there were a version with a "cooler" tone of colors, like green / gold / black for example.

  • @chronodusk

    They got this down perfectly:

Now, all we need is infinite outfit combinations.

That's an excellent idea I think. They made the mistake in July of last year of just lowering all of the prices.... but why I ask???? To make it more accessible??

Like you said, Bilge Rat should be the lowest cost cosmetic set. Then things like Admiral and Sovereign should be top notch and more costly.

It would be a neat way to determine how rich a pirate is without them wearing Legend cosmetics.

  • @chronodusk Who cares how rich a pirate is? I only care about how rich I am! ...and you should too; now hand over all of your loot to prove it. 😈

  • This is a cosmetic based game, and so far cosmetic releases are just terrible. Im tired of waiting and waiting and waiting. Ive bought everything in the game, as have many of my friends. I was PL10 in February and have 700 dabloons. Where are DUKES limited time cosmetics?? Severely lacking! The anniversary cosmetics were a let down - reskinned old cosmetics. Arena had 2 full cosmetics and thats it! Arena is full of bugs. Shores gold cosmetics are cool but mismatched. Shores of gold full of bugs. STOP releasing new broken bugged dlc and get back to basics that made the game worth it and people happy!! Who cares about reaching a whole range of players who mostly cry and complain. And get back to the hard core SOT gamers that made YOUR game from day 1 RARE!!

  • @ghosthound81

Arena didn't have a full set, it is still missing half of it... (boots, pants, belt, peg leg) which is kind of sad and strange to me.

Tall Tales cosmetics are special to me because of what Tall Tales means to me, but they are lacking in complete or at least matching pieces.

The Parrot set was the only full cosmetic release in Anniversary. I kind of thought a new age for Sea of Thieves meant a whole new wave of customizations would drop, but I was wrong apparently.

  • @chronodusk It's a shame that it will take a bunch of people commenting on the lack of cosmetics before they add anything.

And I don't know if you can even call it dripfeeding when it took over 6 months to put out any player cosmetics.

  • @chronodusk
It's annoying how they do that. I also wish they would do a dye system, because then recolors wouldn't have to exist. They are adding more to cosmetics with meaning at least. I'm not saying there's enough, but rare's getting better with that.
Not with drip feeding though. That's fine for most content, but cosmetics should come more.

It's a pirate based game. I don't care about cosmetics. I want your gold, your boots and your motorcycle.

  • I was expecting to shell out most of my gold when the anniversary hit and all I got was the parrot set and a smattering of Sea Dogs. To my surprise, they brought back the scurvy bilge rat figurehead that's been gone since May of last year along with a couple swords, but I also recall several patches ago a Royal Sovereign wheel that was put in by mistake. Joe Neate stated shortly after the introduction of the admiral, sea dog, and sovereign (wheel/capstan/cannon) sets that ones for every type were coming soon. I was sure that after the brief appearance of the royal sov wheel that the anniversary would finally bring about the rest of the matching sets and we got the parrot and killer whale, aka Old Betty instead. Ps. the original sails looked better.

  • @blazedrake100

Yeah as far as dripfeeding, it feels like it has gotten a lot worse.

  • As far as exclusivity goes the Ferryman Set and the Black Dog are the only ones left standing.
It was a mistake to bring the Mercenary Set to the public if you ask me.
Now, a lot of players are complaining that they want the Wailing Barnacle and the Bone Crusher make a return.
Can we please focus on actual new cosmetics? Thank you.

  • @lt-swag-johnson

Yeah I don't think Mercenary was planned to be released in the game that way... I think it was done that way because of the outrage that occured when it was awarded to the "Friends Play Free" newbies... but they pretended that it was always going to get added to the game. I don't have the Ferryman set, but I do think it should remain exclusive.

  • @chronodusk
I want the Ferryman set so bad (and the controller but it's $400 now on Amazon)
But I'm glad it's exclusive. It would lose it's magic if it was just dumped into the game and wouldn't be a fun to wear because everyone would have it. I have the complete Black dog/Onyx set which I worked for (except the blunderbuss) And I'm hoping they release a ship livery for it. My suggestion was a Greyhound figurehead (Side note: I have a black greyhound named Onyx so it's actually perfect)

Maybe I'll just have to draw one up and try and convince them to have a design contest?

  • @m1sterpunch

Just getting off my original topic a bit, you make a good point.

I think Rare should hold a cosmetic art contest and use the top 5 designs for new cosmetic sets and award those players with controllers and immortalization.
