Improvement on the messages in Bottles

  • Right now, I think I speak for many, it feels like the messages in bottles you can find scattered across the islands isn't really worth the trouble to go and do. Sure, sometimes you get one with 5 chests on one island, but the chances of more than 2 of them being any better then a marauder's chest or even a seafarers is very low. So why even bother when you can get more xp from doing a voyage?

Well what if there were a special kind of chest or loot you could only find through the messages in bottles? And even some commendations for them? Now that would make them more fun and interesting to actually do.

Maybe use the new chests you can open, put a skull or two in them or some other loot.

  • I agree, bottles are always disappointing to find nowadays. I feel they are more aimed towards newer players, free quests you don't have to buy and they have random quality of loot. Most of the time the quality is pretty poor and my crew and I don't bother doing them unless we already have a map on an island, but we don't go out of our way to do them.

They are a bit too common also, ending up with 3 pages of maps we don't intend to do is a bit annoying. I wish they were more rare, but that the quality of loot would be better.

  • They are bonus missions! Do them or don't! The only problem with them right now is the inability to discard them once picked up. That said, if you don't like doing them, then don't pick them up! Easy!

I like them for the easy 2k in gold I can get from the crate merchant missions, and nowadays when solo-slooping, I do them more than the regular voyages.

  • Nowdays, you can find the same type of poor quests in barrels.

So, the new players can still doing quick quests without voting for a voyage.

That's why we can make the bottle quests unique and a bit less common.

A quest could be to bring some different type of food to a poor npc lost on an island.
It can also be a fight versus skeletons to delivet him from jail.
Or he can ask you to find the watch he just lost.

  • I'd like to have them very much
more rare and allways have a captains chest at minimum.

  • I love muh sparkles on the beach.
Just seeing that little glint on the horizon and I'll jump ship just to go get it.
Even though I never do them unless it's an island I happen to be passing....but do them....don't do them....it's all good.
It is a bit disappointing when it turns out to be a bottle rather than real loot....but adventure is awaitin'.

I'm with @Galactic-Geek & @BloodyBil on the sentiment of "want to either dispose of them (add a drop item) or put them into a barrel for later....why must they clutter the quest inventory?!"
If only we could put some of the many useless barrels to use on the ship....holding these sorts of items would be perfect.

Very much agree - would very much like to be able to drop/delete unwanted quests.

Or, at the very least give them all a time limit like the Merchant ones have, so that if you haven't acted on them, they expire after a short time and go away.

Another alternative would be the ability to read the contents of the message-in-a-bottle, and then have the option of whether or not you want to take it on or leave it for the next person to find.

  • @arsigi
    LOL
It eats at my soul when a voyage expires. I feel like I've disappointed the salty gods in some way.
    RODL!!
But when I remember that it was the useless cannonballs crate voyage.....I mumble, "whatever".

But I'd much love a cleaner inventory! 😍

"Another alternative would be the ability to read the contents of the message-in-a-bottle, and then have the option of whether or not you want to take it on or leave it for the next person to find."

YES YES YES....let us read the voyage and then choose to keep or drop.
The Foley artists would love gathering a dozen different audio samples of bottles dropping into sand, watery sand or bushes.
Would be interesting to be able to stow those bottles wherever we'd like....but a server merge or timer would probably reset them so ultimately meaningless, I guess.

  • I sailed on a random Brigantine the other day with two pre teen kids. These boys had three bottle missions on their Wheel and were punching them out the best they could! 😂 They were focused, trying to read the navigation map, trying to read the treasure maps, etc... It was simply adorable to see these boys working through their issues! I don't think either was capable of maybe doing riddles or understood the task of purchasing quest but they got super excited everytime they found a bottle! Not everything in this game is for all of us but everything in this game "is" for someone.🙂

  • @juramaiia yes good idea! make messages in a bottle great again!

  • I can respect the "do or don't" viewpoint, and also that they maybe are more intended for new players, but I still wanna feel excitement for them as an old player. It would just add more color to what you can do and get in the game. I am all for making them rare and that you can delete them. The excitement of "oooh what will i find" would be much greater with a rare loot that you could only find with a message in a bottle. It is what I believe anyways.

Keep the ones in barrels as is, for new players, but a shiny bottle on a beach? You better stop your ship and get that!
