Yes, it already exists. Sure, waves get huge in storms and there are no waves at shore. It would be cool to expand on this idea instead of having a set wave size that can easily adjust your ship course.
The idea of this suggestion is based around the intensity of waves. The closer you get to storms, the stronger the winds get so the bigger the waves are. We all have been in storms and those waves are higher than sloops even. So what if the further you get from the storm, the more calm the sea becomes?
I'm not asking for a flat sea like what we see at the shores of islands but wave sizes that can vary based on your location. Instead of using the location of the storm, we can use anything.
Let's use the regions for example.
I will explain this according to the region names.
The Devil's Roar can have the largest waves, maybe something that we have now, especially when there is a nearby eruption quaking the sea. The Wilds can have moderate waves, something to bump your ship but nothing intense-- something wild... The Shores of Plenty can be the most prone to height adjustment according to the storm location. The Ancient Isles can have something old and calm.
Or, you know, do an idea mash of wave height dependent on storm location and region you're in.
I came up with this when I was thinking "What if I could see the fish further out? I would need calm waters like the shores. What if there were calm waters, but not too calm like the shores? Woah, different wave intensity would be so cool!" Everything after the first paragraph was thought of on the spot.
