Megalodon Spawn Rates

  • Greeting Pirates!
I've read a few comments here and there regarding this topic, and may have altogether missed a previously posted forum, but I thought I write my thoughts here.

Shrouded Spoils introduced all the various flavors of Megalodons, and during the Shrouded Spoils campaign, they spawned quite regularly and I was able to crush 3 of the 5 (Blue, Purple, Red) Legendary Meg commendations. I say this not to brag about my accomplishments, but to emphasize the spawn rate during the campaign.

Following the Shrouded Spoils campaign, it was like a switch was thrown on the Megalodon Spawn Rates. My sailing time has not decreased, my sailing activities have not changed. I typically sail around with a Sloop, but will also sail the occasional Brig or Galleon. My typical Megalodon spawn encounters are approximately 2 Megs in a 4-5 hour session. I almost always see Blue and Purple Megs, Red Megs are somewhat rare 1-2 per week, Green/Yellow Megs I haven't seen in 5 weeks (where previously I had seen and destroyed 29 during the Shrouded Spoils campaign) , and the Ghost Meg spawn rate is it's own thing discussed ad nauseam.

My point in all this is the Megalodon Spawn Rate has noticeably changed. I miss the days of sailing in open water and regularly encountering a Megalodon. I do enjoy the chase of Commendation completions, but the experience of sailing during the Shrouded Spoils campaign felt much more lively and intense than it does now.

Any chance of dialing the spawn rate of Megalodons up a bit more?

  • @promotordj i think the spawn rates for encounters on the sea (pve) wise is waaay too high and kinda ruins it a bit... 2 megs in 5 hours?? I get like 3-6 per hour + a kraken or 2... and thats just by spamming forts...

  • @lysergicaa Krakens I get all the time as well! I always happen to be sailing in open water when a Fort or Ships are defeated. My ship seems to be the one to spawn the Kraken more often then not.

When you encounter the Meg as often as you do, does your crew stop and destroy it? Or do you sail in range of an island to despawn the Meg? Just curious as I quite literally will only spawn the Meg 2 times in a 4-5 hour session. I do stop and destroy each one I encounter in the hopes that the next one will be Green/Yellow or White.

  • @promotordj I agree, something changed with the spawn rate. It seems like when you're hunting them, they just don't spawn. My friend and I have been hunting them for the past week and we are lucky to see one in an hour. That's with us sailing around the entire map, staying away from islands and trying to stay in deeper water. I used to see them quite a lot and of course my crew and I would pass on killing them, but when I want to hunt them, they are no where to be found. I'd love to know what triggers them to spawn...

  • @lysergicaa maybe you should try sailing with us sometime, we will play for hours just trying to find one and we get maybe one.

  • Agreed ❤️

  • you should sail when i sail, cause that damn plate of Fish Food follows me Everywhere!! lol, its like it smells my pirate dreadlocks in the wind as soon as i leave port, and hunts me down as if It was related to the Cursed Jaws sharks.. yet the Rarest Megalodons seem to evade me allowing me to have killed them atleast once each ( and Exception to that is the ghost Meg that doesnt exist and is only a propaganda tool by Rare to make people sail the seas, and any one who has killed it photoshopped the photo :p ) i do feel it would be in the benefit of RARE, as ive mentioned in previous like issued posts, throwing fish, or "Chum" chopped up bloody fish parts to attract Meg, or even allowing NPCs to mention a Rumor of a Megalodon Sighting near an island.. players would then sail to that island and find bloody water, then find debris in water and finally the Meg.. this would allow players to make an active Hunt for Achievements instead of waiting for random encounter..

  • Apologies for resurrecting my old Thread. I thought I would update everyone on my quest to complete the Meg commendations (both Bilge Rat and Legendary). At the time of the original posting, I only had a handful of Green/Yellow Megs to complete for the Legendary commendation and the ever elusive White Meg to find. It did take another few months of sailing around but I finally was able to complete the Green/Yellow Meg Legendary Commendation.

Since the Completion, and no exaggeration here, my crew and I have ONLY encountered Blue and Purple Megs (and yes, we have taken the time to destroy each and every one).

@The3SheetsNeate (or any other Rare Developer): I have a few questions surrounding Megalodons. Would you be able to shed a glimmer of light on the spawn mechanics of Megalodons? Is it truly a random occurrence with each version of the Meg containing it's own probability of occurring? Do the probabilities of each Meg type change dependent on the crews collective Completed Commendations? (E.g. If someone on the crew has all the Green/Yellows complete, do the probabilities of occurrence drop? If someone on the crew has already found the rare White Meg does that become even more rare?) Do Meg spawn rates change depending on the size of the ship you are sailing on? (E.g. Sloops see less Megs than Galleons? I realize the difficulty is scaled to ship size, but does rate of occurrence also scale?)

I ask these questions as the frustration of seeing only Blue and Purple Megs is becoming discouraging to the crew. Its been months of only those two colors. As we sail literally every day for 6+ hours a day, and with 18M meters sailed to date, the redundancy of Blue and Purple megs is wearing on us. (Also, super jealous of those lucky pirates who've been able to track down the colorless beast! Congrats!)

Thanks for any encouraging information you'd be able to provide!

  • @promotordj

Problem is, Rare won’t say anything about the game mechanics or how to spawn a meg. You have to be vigilant. There is a pattern in how they spawn and where. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough information to verify this but I have noticed a pattern

  • we seem to be having a necro problem.

  • @captain-coel Thank you for providing useful (?) feedback. I prefaced the post apologizing for bring up an old thread. I had a few questions that were related to my OG post.

Again, apologies to my fellow pirates for bringing up an older forum post.

  • Please don't resurrect old threads, it is against the forum rules. This thread will now be locked.
