Do something about ghost ship and kracken spawn rates when solo slooping

  • The last few days I have been grinding to try and reach Legend by the 20th. Which is clearly not going to happen, because this game is clearly broken, or deliberately punishes solo players. Within an eight hour period on Sunday afternoon (AEDST), I encountered five ghost ships and two krackens... I was able to sail through the kracken's waters, but got sank by the ghost ships. Just now, I lost my ship to a kracken (in the middle of a storm) within five minutes after running a ghost ship aground on a rock. The spawn rates of these events is bloody ridiculous for solo players... especially after spending 45 minutes to an hour stocking the sloop at Galleons Grave Outpost, then immediately encountering the ghost ship after leaving the dock. Fix the ridiculous mess!! I have a had enough bs*t!

  • Yesterday I was duo on a sloop, got skele shipped and whilst we were fighting that, Karen came....and then the meg (thankfully ate the skele ship twice).

I mean we defeated it but definitely couldn't of done that Solo, I'm just thankful my crew knows how to counter Karen and Skele ship was shooting steering lock balls :P

  • @schmittyd you must keep an eye out for the skull fort/Fleet clouds.

The kraken is considered a major event and will only appear in the rest time between the active fort/fleet cloud switching areas.

But skeleton ships can be bother so I sympathise with those who run into them.

  • I definitely agree with this, I usually play solo but every now and then I play with my cousin and we get destroyed by galleon ghost ships, it’s almost impossible to try and keep the boat a float and destroy the ghost ship, super frustrating.

  • I agree.

I feel like they have been used as a stop gap to make general sailing more interesting (very subjective), and in some ways this is true. However I hope that the content being revealed soon includes an alternative and they can release some pressure on the go pedal with these spawns.

The ghost ships and megs have become a nuisance, not an epic wonderous thing that can happen. Even the kraken is so predictable that when i see the skull cloud vanish and a few minutes later her chime, my eyes roll. I miss the days when 2 weeks could pass without a sighting, and when it happened it was so unexpected.

The problem is also that there are commendations now for killing them X number of times so they have to ensure you encounter them frequently enough to make progress or people would complain.

I've made the point a number of times, but I would rather they were hazards to avoid then outright RNG activated events forced on you regardless of what you wanted to be doing. At least with hazards its your own fault and you're punished for your negligance. Not just arbitrarily punished, having to slog through one of these fights for the 100th time.

  • I am ready to throw my controller. After having a break for a couple of hours, I start again, stock ship, leave, and bingo... ghost ship. It is seriously ridiculous.

  • The skeleton ship difficulty rate seems to vary a lot.
At times after pounding it with 40 cannonballs you have barely filled it with water, while other times, you put 3 holes in it and it sinks within half a minute...
Don't know why that is, but it sure is strange.

The Kraken is at least more consistant, just remember to aim for the closest tentacle every time and you should be fine =)

But the spawn rates on these needs looking at, the ships at the very least spawn way to often.

I had a skeleton ship earlier, just outside an outpost... managed to guide it into sa rock, and it despawned.

  • Skeleton ship vs. 4-man galleon = fun

Skeleton ship vs. 3-man brigantine = fun + slightly challenging

Skeleton ship vs. 2-man sloop = fun + challenging

Skeleton ship vs. 1-man sloop = very challenging + overwhelming

Depending on what ccb the skeleton ship is shooting, it can still be manageable on a solo sloop. However, when you’re being shot with cannonballs that make you dance or sleep, you’re basically stuck on repair/scoop duty most of the time, and when you poke your head out to fire back, one regular cannonball to the forehead sends you to the ferry of the damned and by the time you load back in, your ship has sunk.

  • Skeleton ships are not as hard soloslooping as you think, it's fairly easy if you know what to do and/or having cursed cannonballs.
But yea it's disturbing when they are bombarding you with vomit balls and you can't repair properly before the skellieship shoot at the same spot and you end up vomiting and bailing your life out.
But yea then you can just steer away and voilá you get a new chance.

I do a kraken everytime any day of the week in a sloop than a brig/galleon, sloop krakens are WAY to easy...even solo. (They nerfed this as well when it already was to easy so they made it super easy) - Brigs and galleons on the other hand are hell, i just tell everybody to run when im in a boattype like that because im not good at all at it because the ones i play with is usually run around like headless hens and don't know what to do haha.

No to decrease the spawnrate on anything at the moment! Sorry dude

  • I find ghost ships and krakens fairly easy on the solo sloop tbh...i do solo sloop most of time so kinda used to it

  • @schmittyd Ahoy, fellow sailor!

I have a fantastic crew, but often sail by my lonesome, so I can relate to what you are writing.

Sounds like challenging adventures, to be sure! However, the obstacles are not deliberate. It can feel like it sometimes, but no one at Rare is targeting you, or other solo players specifically, to intentionally hinder your progress.

Other posters have given some good advice when it comes to predicting the arrival of the Kraken, and is worth taking into consideration when sailing alone.

    1. Sprint below deck when it tries to pull you off the ship.
    2. Repair immediately after it slams the ship.
    3. Shoot the end of the tentacle that is grappling the hull.

Regarding skeleton ships, I suggest raising your sails to half-mast to gain more control over the ship, unless you can outmaneuver them close to large rocks or islands. You cannot outrun them without some deft maneuvers. The alternative is raising the sails completely and keep one broadside facing them at all times, usually at a slow rotation. The amount of cannonballs you expend does not matter – only where you hit. Ten cannonballs can be enough. Aim beneath the waterline. If the skeletons have The Dancing Demon or The Sandman's Revenge cannonballs, it is important to keep all holes to a bare minimum and keep hammering their ship with cannonfire. They will win in a prolonged fight. A certain amount of luck can be involved in those circumstances. Such are the risks.

Besides that, a rowboat can alleviate the pain of defeat somewhat in preserving your well-earned loot should your ship sink despite your efforts.

    Happy sailing!

  • Ghost ships are fun. I agree that it is difficult while solo on a sloop. However, instead of changing the game, change the playing style. Get a crew. Don't sail solo. If you do, understand the consequences. The sea owes you nothing.

Playing solo is the single most difficult way to play. Asking to make it easier on hard mode seems an odd request.

  • @schmittyd

Welcome to the world of a solo captain. It is the most challenging and best place to practice ones pirating skills.

There is nothing in the game that cannot be done by a solo player. I know as I have done each of these encounters all alone, including the skeleton fleets cloud event.

However the success of a solo captain is all on their own shoulders. There enough guides out there that will provide you with tips and strategies to overcome these challenges.

The brute and challenging nature of being solo is not for everyone. Though for us scurvy pirates, it is the most satisfying aspects that this game has to offer.

With enough practice you will no longer fear the depths. There is no need to nerf or reduce the encounters: 8 hours of play, 7 encounters is less than one an hour. If the solo experience is to hard for you, it might be time to find a crew.
