There should be a way to pull your ship upto a dock when you get close similar to docking a rowboat to the back of the ship.
Docking your ship
@timelesstonto that's been suggested already sometimes...I don't think this is needed
When you do it long enough you can park even better than the start-position of the ship is without the need of an anchor@timelesstonto the larger ships take a bit more work and coordination, but with a little bit of time you will be able to park a sloop in reverse, on a summer night, in the emporer's new clothes!

Nay!!! If ye pirate not be knowin' how to park ye ship, then ya not be any kind of pirate.
That's completely illogical, because then I'd be th' kind o' Corsair who couldn't park a ship.
The magic of SoT is precisely the fact that most of the things in the game do not have any kind of assist. Where there is such a thing is where we really need it, like when we park the rowboat behind the ship, it's easy to place the cannonballs (it leaves the battle more dynamic), things like that. Putting any assist would make the game lose its proposal. Docking is fun, challenging, only the best players can dock perfectly. The less help we have, the better players we will become.
This request does not make sense.
This is one of the things that gives dynamics and realism to the game, a very easy thing to do after you get some experience with the game and the ships available.
Instead of stopping at the anchor just lift the sails when you are arriving, this will make you stop as you wish and at the quay of the outpost. If you do this kind of thing then you'll be asking the sails to adjust automatically as the wind changes, the cannons recharge if they are empty, the ship to sail alone to the island you ask, and so on. .

Docking isn't hard once you get use to the ship :) I have even docked galleons this way VIDEO

this is a topic people have been talking about for along time. I personally think its needed. with a plank of wood to the dock to go down on instead of jumping each time. Something to at least Align you with the dock, Put it optional so you dont have to use it if you dont want to

true mate
@timelesstonto I have to say, I was mighty proud the first time I docked a galleon at Galleon's Grave such that the gangplank was right off the dock and you could literally pretty much walk off and on the ship. Did it solo, too, because everyone else was AFK after finishing the fort. It's a skill that can be learned.
Like anything in SOT, it just takes practice to be good at docking properly. I'm great at docking, finding treasure, and navigating, but not so good at PvP.
Docking (and sailing in general) is just one of many skills players can excel in and feel they are contributing to a crew. If you automate that, you just take a role away from a lot of players who may not be so good at other tasks.
I like to think I am pretty good at parking each of the ships at most islands, especially outposts. However, there are times where I do a bad job for one reason of another and it would be pretty cool to sync it up with the dock.
You would need to be close, and at full stop in order to moore the ship and the action would take time to do/undo like raising an anchor or adjust sails.

I can just imagine a galleon heading straight into the dock with full sails. One crew member is standing on the bow waiting for that perfect moment to hit the "dock" button just before you crash. Then voila, no holes and a perfectly docked boat.
It's a no from me.
The way you described would be horrible and I cannot imagine them even considering that as an option.
There would need to be checks in place so that your ship is aligned to a certain degree with the dock, and already stopped or barely drifting. Similar to how the ship customization box at the shipwright works, except located at key points of the dock.
It would be a process to properly moor the ship to the dock and to release it, similar to raising the anchor. Using it will need to be a conscious decision as you would be stuck at the dock and unable to leave in a rush.
@archangel-timmy Yeah I agree. The poster said it would be "similar to docking a rowboat to the back of a ship." I just wanted to point out that this is currently how docking a rowboat works. It doesn't matter what angle you row in at or how fast you are going. You just have to be close enough to the back of the ship.

Whilst I don't think the docking feature is necessary, I would like to be able to 'auto align' the wheel I.E a button that perfectly centres the wheel. Just a 'nice to have'.
Yes... and we need a pop-up notification for when crew changes occur (either coming or going)..
*has anyone ever freaked when a new open-crew pirate just shows up? or how about when all the crew silently & suddenly leaves the boat leaving you to solo a galleon, just before someone aims the helm at a rock formation.
I get the auto-park complaint though, I'm still patching hulls based on sloppy approaches. (I even ruined a skull fort the other day, our galleon sank, other pirate was like "go get fresh boat. so I did, promptly sailed it back to active fort, and ground it right into the shallows, trying to hot-shot the anchor hard-stop. then my team left(dont blame them))
