Safe zone ideas

  • In a way the ship of the damned is a safe zone... but now if only they created a tavern, a location where you could interact with others
in a meaningful way so you could maybe setup alliances, trade quests, trade items perhaps? play some mini games or just any interactive ideas aside from the fighting and stealing in its current form
Any ships docked at that specific outpost can be subject to penalty if firing on other ships perhaps?
all this just to kinda escape pirating for a while in game.

And make nights darker, more interesting please.

Definitely something which has been suggested and requested quite a few times in the past as this thread shows, there have been a lot of ideas and discussions around what we might see there, one of the main points seems to be a way to join or bring together a crew before you enter the main game, so the social space is a sort of lobby location with shops etc

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/20518/knightx13-s-compendium-of-feature-mechanic-and-content-requests?page=1

Both of these are inaccessible now, but I'm sure the search function will bring up similar discussions :)

  • A place to purchase our pets and buy food for them or something.

  • Need some pirate games and card games on one of these safe areas. As well as some shops, puzzles, and challenges.

  • im against any safe zones in the main world. a social hub of some sort that is selectable from the menu is what id support, but nowhere where people can run to to avoid pvp in the main world game, thats cheesy.

  • Thy pirate world be a place of many to trust and not to be trusted. Ye shall be smart and cunning, always knowing the pirate life is a choice and ye will never be safe.

Be more pirate me lads and lass'!!!

  • @enticed-malice I think you need to look at it differently, its not a place to "run to avoid pvp" its a place to pause progress and do other things which you can't do anywhere else.

  • Don’t see why any of that requires a safe zone. They’re all decent ideas (minigame ok; trading items? Not so much) but just pull up to an outpost and do it. Maybe I want to kill you once you beat me at checkers!

  • @haydnsym45 Because there are players that are complete ID 10's or "griefers" if you will, and they take the pirate out of the game.

People always use the excuse "this is a pirate game" to get away with ways not meant to be.

No pirate in the world would dump their own gold in the ocean for the sake of it, or sink their own ship when they can make gold from the voyage as well and many examples out there of how this game needs fine tuning with certain rules

Basically what I am trying to says is that there are unreasonable gamers out there that need the forced guidelines otherwise they don't care about anything and this can provide a certain balance.

  • @eva1977 there aren’t really that many toxic players. I find if you’re just sailing around and saying “we’re friendly let’s form an alliance” the whole way in, the results are positive 90% of the time. Which is pretty good odds. If they’re selling off or think you’re sailing in with treasure or to attack, then yeah they’re going to try to wreck you.

  • @haydnsym45 I differ and would say its more like 50% of the time based on my experience.

Besides this game is known for lack of content and to me anything new is a welcome addition and I personally would love to see this in the game.

  • @eva1977 I already said the ideas were fine, but safe zones... not that one. It has been quite a while since I got legit chased unprovoked - at least a full week (15 Athena voyages). Not to say you’re not having a bad string of encounters of course.

  • @haydnsym45 This game, this interaction in game is all based on luck nothing we say is a guarantee things will happen a certain way so my vote for that safe place is because of that but i see you point we just have different views.

  • The social hub without ships where you could recruit the crew members before entering the main game would be great. It could as well be in the main game but that version should have pvp enabled.

  • @archaell So with PVP enabled how is that any different from any tavern or any place in game already?

People seem to miss the point of this place i suggest it is because yes we can be friends, we can be alliances, we can all basically that awesome crew we imagine
but since people always use the excuse "this is a pirate game" to do the complete opposite. Then this place allows for no fights, or you can but with a penalty to make you think before you shoot.
And this just adds something not in game which i think it is missing, besides its not going to be a map nor an area just a simple tavern not a game breaker.

  • @eva1977 Well we could reuse one of the outpost that are already in the game for the lobby, because it wouldn't be much different. It should just provide some utility to make finding groups easier and maybe few social features. The safe zone in the main game would be game breaking, because then you wouldn't risk your face and your loot which would make things like forming PvE servers much easier.

  • @archaell it would not be game breaking if you aren't gaining anything from being there

  • @eva1977 Why would you be there if you are not gaining anything? For that purpose the pre-game lobby would be good enough. If the lobby isn't good enough then you are actually gaining something while being there - and that is game breaking.

  • @archaell that kind of exists in the LFG section, granted minus the in-game social experience. It might work, or maybe no one would use it, but I could see giving it a try.

  • @eva1977 how do you think feeding pets could have any substantial impact on the game?

  • @archaell As i mentioned to get away from the pirating itself in game, to play mini games to trade things with other pirates perhaps?

  • @xzodeak Well pigs need food and plants need water perhaps the pets we purchase in the future will need something and this might be the place to get it?
Just use your imagination as this is only an idea not something established.

  • @eva1977 All the things you mentioned could be done in the lobby without affecting the adventure mode. The issue is with taking break from the adventure mode to hide in the safe zone and then returning back to it to continue. If you need to get away from the pirating - leave the session and you can chat in the lobby without being disrupted by pvp, voyages or treasure. That would work.

  • @archaell And all the things that can be done in the current lobby are those same things as well. So the home screen is our safe space, i get my crew together we create our plan and then join sea of thieves...

No this is not my idea of additional things in game i want content and my ideas give content, not game changers or breakers besides if they are bad to the point where people hate them RARE eventually removes it.

  • There should probably be maybe alittle hub like chat room outside of the main adventure mode you can chat/form crews at, although i imagine that be mass chaos to the point of being annoying as i tend to dislike hearing the voices of kids screaming loudly over other conversations, something pretty common in something like VRchat.

a safe area in the main game is too many issues to address and as such, would likely never happen.

Rare has in the past mentioned that safe spaces would NEVER happen, they had a really stern stance on it of not moving, even going on in an interview to say "no matter how much reddit wants it" as the reddit was the main connection point during the early stages of the game to the community.

a hub outside of the adventure mode would probably be the best compromise to that.

  • @archaell said in Safe zone ideas:

The social hub without ships where you could recruit the crew members before entering the main game would be great. It could as well be in the main game but that version should have pvp enabled.

You mean Athena's Fortune? A place in the real world accessible from all outposts without ships and PvP enabled.

  • @cotu42 The Athena's Fortune is dead - I haven't met anyone alive there... but good point! We have the Athena's Fortune and the Ferry so maybe it's pointless to have the social hub in the adventure game at all. But it would work similarly pre-game. Basically we would load in the social outpost with let's say 50 other people where it would be possible to form crews for specific things (it could also include the Athena Fortune in tavern(s) for the legendary crews) or join specific open groups (based on their voyage or location etc). It could also have the social features like the mini games, real money store for pets and other things like that.

  • Maybe it should be a completely different zone. Like, you get a loading screen and then enter the safe zone tavern. While you are inside, your ship is nowhere to be seen, not outside this zone either. That way, people can't attack you. I would love a safe zone where you can meet new people and form alliances. That would be awesome!

  • As the artbook shows, there had been ideas about things like that from the start of the game.

  • @archaell I would be all good to have open crew lobby in a more tavern setting, where we can meet and interact.

Just wanted to point out that in the adventure mode pirates tend to be out at sea.

  • @eva1977 Cool ideas, but... Safe zones, please, no.

  • The problem with safe zones is that they don't really solve anything; they just move the engagement point. People will just wait outside the zone to attack, essentially creating an area where you are trapped.

Even worse is that it creates a new problem of people attacking you or stealing your loot and then running to an area where they can't be touched.

So then you need to add a bunch of side-rules to try to minimize these problems, when you'd probably have been better off just leaving it as it was originally.

  • @targasbr So is a "safe zone" going to change sea of thieves?
Fine then lets just call them "combat zones" (except you can't fight here)

I think it's more a psychological bias based on assumption of what will happen instead of what actually happens.

  • @d3adst1ck So why aren't we trapped already when we spawn in outposts?

We have no actual data on this so it is all assumptions and currently there are locations in sea of thieves that can be used for spawn camping but its never really been a huge problem.

  • There is a long list of historical data from many other games that tried to do the safe zone idea, and they all pretty much have the same problems. Even as recently as The Division, which has a PVP specific zone, would result in people camping the zone entry and just killing people as they entered.

The rate of people being "trapped" at an outpost when you spawn in is near zero, and in the cases that it does happen you just started the game and have nothing to lose anyways.
