Cursed Island event

  • Had a thought for a more dynamic “Skull fort” type event.

    On a random medium sized island a cursed chest will spawn. Undead themed music would play when close to the chest. Only a four person crew can interact with the chest. The crew member that interacts with the chest turns into a cursed captain and the other three crew turn into cursed crew. Ghostly shadowed versions of their pirates. Their galleon becomes a ghostly apparition that becomes anchored in its place and cannot be interacted with. They cannot leave the island and any crew not on the island when the chest is activated are teleported to the chest. If they attempt to leave they are teleported back.

    A dark cloud forms above the island letting other players know a cursed chest is active. This cloud shrouds the island in darkness like night time. The now cursed crew must defend themselves to other crews for around 30 minutes.

    The cursed crew members on death will respawn from the cursed chest. If the cursed captain is killed the cursed island event ends and the chest can be picked up and sold for a large amount of gold. If the cursed crew survives the 30 minutes the chest is worth triple its amount but can only be picked up by them and the event ends. The crews galleon sinks if the cursed captain is killed.

    The cursed crew has the ability of the shadow skeletons. The lantern must be used to burn them and hit them for a limited time. Time of day does not effect this due to the dark cloud. As the 30 minutes ticks down the dark cloud becomes a storm of increasing severity.

    The cursed crew gets boosted health and speed for movement and attack. Each member gets the weapons they have when they activate the chest and cannot change them.

  • @k1lroyw4sh3r3 This looks really cool! My only question is what happens if I don't want to be forced to play the event? What if I'm enjoying my chicken-collecting quest and don't want to fight for this chest? I think that for this idea to work, forced teleportation would have to be turned off.

  • @vorondil1 all four crew members interact with the chest like voting on a voyage? All crew must agree to be damned with the curse.

    Do they have the skeleton's infinite resources and ammo? If not, guns are virtually useless. Also, will other skeletons attack them, or could other skeletons even join in to support as part of the wave (I could see it being the chest is discovered, then they place OoS missions on the island and have the skeletons support them)? What happens if the player is holding an item, resource, equipment piece, or chest? (It would be funny to become a gunpowder skeleton).

  • Something that a lot of play testing for balance would be required to see if unlimited ammo or bananas are needed. Obviously you would want the cursed crew to be really strong since they would possibly having to fight the rest of the server off.

    If they cannot switch weapons, their ship cannot be interacted with, and there is no ammo box on the island (or nearby) it will be an issue for them quite quickly. Bananas and cannonballs (if the island has cannons) could pose the same difficulty.

    I enjoyed reading that idea. It was well thought out and sounds like something that could be really fun. It reminds me of a guild event I helped host while playing Star Wars: The Old Republic sooooo many years ago. We assigned two players as "Stronghold Generals" and the goal was the protect that player for as long as possible. We had 100's of players participating in the event that the sever became wildly unstable on that world. The reason I share that tid bit with you is because I know that this type of event can work and people enjoy participating in these kinds of events.

    This idea is unique enough to be something new and fresh while also creating a new way for players to interact with one another and enjoy some competition. Hopefully Rare takes some inspiration from this and creates an event such as this!

    What would happen if a enermy crew was still on the island when the event timed out?

    What's stopping an enermy ship from camping next to the immoble ship a insta sinking it with kegs and CCb's the moment it became vanerable?

    The way you described all members of the crew are forced to stay on the island and off the ship. That means as soon as the event ends the ship is completely unguarded.

    Maybe if the ship radiated a shockwave when it came back, similar to how returning from the Ferry was suggested to? Or perhaps some invincibility for a bit, like residual curses repairing it for free or something.

    If the captain is killed then they lose, so even if another crew is on the island, if the captain survives it should be fine for them. I do think the captain should probably have a few lives though, one for 30 minutes is probably not good (unless he has greatly increased health).

  • Good point. To add to the theme if a cursed crew completes the event, themselves and the ship remains cursed. They cannot kill or harm other players and cannot interact with any other game world item except the cursed chest. Other players cannot kill or harm the cursed crew. They cannot damage the cursed ship. The ship would a ghostly apparition that still must adhere to the ocean and land masses but will do no damage to other ships. Maybe even passing right through!

    Since the cursed crew held off any other crew or crews for the allotted time they reap the reward at the cost of being cursed until they turn in the cursed chest. This once the chest is turned in the curse is lifted.

  • with some minor tweaks to this using some of the suggestions here, this would be a killer event. I like it.

  • I don't like the idea of having a skeleton captain to kill, since all pirates are supposed to be equal - I would suggest having to destroy something else - either the cursed chest itself, or perhaps their ship?
