My Thoughts about Arena and PvE servers is bad across the board. Arena will split the player base.
I remember Joe Neate saying you'd enter Arena through a separate choice at the beginning of the game. boom, player base split.
What makes this game so good is that PVP is driven by PVE. The skeletons and NPC like kraken and meg and ships are easily defeated. They don't represent a challenge at their current level.
What makes it difficult and exciting is that while you fight these NPCs, you have the nagging suspicion you'll be hunted by a real player crew. That tension is what makes this game so great. That sickening feeling when a galleon rolls up on you. Alternatively, that great feeling when you give them the slip up wind.
Rare is treading on thin ice with the split of the community. The trick is in the balance. PVP vs PVE. if it's too easy to kill you, double gun, then it's not fun. Crossplay being broken by OP PC vs Console, not fun, These things are the underlying forces prompting the call for Arena and PVE servers in the first place. the Battle Royal meta is a boring. lots of choices, SoT should not be a BR game.
For the "get GUD" crowd, there will always be someone better than you. I hope they find you and remind you of this.
For the PvE crowd, PVE servers will hold nothing but hollow rewards, not recognized, too easily attained.
More than anything in my 500+ hours in game PL A9 so far is the imbalance of the weapons and the crossplay PC advantage that breaks the game.
Chapman and the Prestons have created a beautiful game, which unfortunately was broken by the money people at Microsoft, by forcing crossplay on the game.
The beauty of Console was a truly even playing field. The People getting banned are all PC players. The hardware and software advantages break the balance of the game. It is much harder to balance because of these inherent platform advantages.
someone at Rare did not push back hard enough on crossplay and thought they could balance the game despite the hardware/software advantage of PC.
February 6th will be telling if the game has to split or not. If they can balance the game away from mouse accuracy and macros, it stand a chance.
