Fix or Remove profanity filter from ingame text chat.

  • Couple nights ago, I wasn't able to use my mic while playing with friends.. So instead I used text chat. But thanks to very odd filter, lots of common words in finnish were censored.
    Even friends name was censored.

I'm sure the placement of the filter has good intentions but for non-english folk it might be a burden as it's not very well implemented.
And Rare, if you need help with filter in different languages, just ask your community. I'm sure lots of us are willing to help :)

  • Rare put it in place as part of their commitment to the community to provide a friendly, safe multiplayer sea. Also helps uphold the Pirate Code. It is understandable, however the in game voice chat blows all manner of appropriateness and decorum out of the water.

  • @x-crowheart-x I do get the point why it's there.. but for non-english people it can be very bad. For example, while trying to reply "yes" to my crewmate on text chat, filter decided it's a bad word :P

  • @clarionz I agree that it should be optional like most games, there are a lot of weird words that get censored, one of them was my friends RL last name. Even acronyms are censored, that's a bit much, especially since people just say toxic things in chat all the time.

  • @clarionz I think you make a good point about that to be honest.
It should be there to help make the Seas more civil for everyone not to stifle conversation.

I would suggest raising a ticket with the support team, they may be able to do something about it.

I do believe in Rares attempt to make the game more user friendly they have gone a bit overboard with the words they censor, here and in game.

  • Most games do offer an option to turn off the swearing filter. I'm an adult, I'm not going to be offended by "naughty" words. It annoys me more seeing **** than it does to see what originally typed. PLEASE Rare, allow all consenting adults to switch off the filter.

No I agree. It should be an option. It is in 99% of online games. Like I was saying it makes no sense with open voice chat in game which is used more often. There are controls to mute voice, but the are very limited.

Players should always have choice. I was just speaking to why they did it. Do not see how it would change any rating aspect as I said voice chat opens a mic to be as offensive and abusing as a toxic voice player wants to be.

Pretty much this, this is the main gripe I have with the text chat in this game and a client side toggle is something I have asked for in the past in other threads on this topic since the filter is so generic its not funny when it comes to this.

Hell it filters text that is tame that has no reason at all to be filtered.

You need to understand that Rare is a UK company and they do not enjoy the freedom of speech that Northern Europe nations do.

Ironically, most western nations do not enjoy the freedom of speech any more; some claim we do, but it's not actually true when you test it. I do not promote testing this if you want to stay out of prison.

  • @swimplatypus7 I would honestly have to refute your point about the UKs freedom of speech.
We are pretty savage with our use of language and slang terms. Even Americans have a hard time with some of our comedians because they are so raw.

I think it’s more along the lines of the internet’s ruining freedom of speech. You litrally can’t say anything these days because it might offend someone and it has litrally every company scared. You see all those scary stories online about some person tweeting something and losing there whole career over a few words. Makes me shudder but I can see why companies are trying to be “Woke”. Lol

  • @KnifeLife
Yes some components of the UK are still free, but you have nailed it regarding the internet, but there are things even non-internet related that are forbidden, just as in Germany.

It's sad because the UK is the nation that jump-started the free world with the Magna Carta; and it's been eroded so heavily that the rule of law and true freedom are fading into the night.

  • @swimplatypus7 It wouldn’t surprise me to be honest, the world is turning very peculiar haha
Maybe we will have to have a conversation about it in a Xbox party and not on message boards.
I’m quite intrigued as to your views on the matter.
I can also guess the obvious ones in Germany but would also like to see how our countries compare and are separated by the laws :)
