Sooner the better recent players gets fixed

  • There's toxicity and then there is plain homophobia. Ran into a few random teens (I'm guessing their ages and they were British, going by their accents) on the Ferry of the Damned and when they saw my ginger afro haired and bearded pirate one exclaimed "Oh look, it's gay Bob Ross", followed by two of his mates shouting the slur beginning with F over and over. While it didn't affect me personally, and I don't report everything just for being toxic, I'm an ally and I have a zero tolerance policy on homophobia (as well as racism). I simply said I was going to report them and said goodbye.

Unfortunately, when I went to check the Xbox App for recent players it hadn't updated in 3 weeks (SOT being the only Xbox game I play), and I had turned off the DVR for performance reasons.

So I guess these homophobes get away for the time being.

Sad story but, thankfully, that's few and far between in the game in my experience.

And, yeah, sooner the better recent players gets fixed (I know Joe Neate said they were working on it).

  • Wasting your time with something that will never change. Just move on down the road lad and it will be water under the bridge. As soon as you rid one, another will take his place. This is the matrix.

I dunno, they seemed pretty scared when I said I was gonna report them for homophobia. Shame I couldn't follow up on it.

And as for wasting my time, too many people have that attitude and that's why discrimination persists. You don't turn a blind eye to that kind of thing. I will always report it when I can.

This time it was me, a man in his late 30s, old enough to have a thick skin about most things, but next time they could surround a lonely kid struggling with his/her identity and that kind of thing is enough to send them over the edge.

  • If you are on Xbox, you can easily save the last 5 minutes of audio and video by holding down the Xbox button in the middle for a few moments. Then you can refer back to it for names as well as proof for Microsoft and Rare of other people’s actions in game.

Thanks but I'm on PC. I deliberately disabled the Game DVR on Windows 10's Xbox Game Bar (as well as Nvidia Shadowplay) because both can cause performance issues.

I appreciate the suggestion and, for once, I did wish I was playing on my Xbox One.

  • @realstyli why can't you just ignore it and move along? Don't get why your making a big deal over nothing. You are acting like a 12 year old who just got called stupid.

I feel like I've already explained. What part of my zero tolerance approach to homophobia and racism do you disagree with specifically?

  • @realstyli What part of, too bad deal with it don't you understand?

  • @goatseathumans said in Sooner the better recent players gets fixed:

@realstyli What part of, too bad deal with it don't you understand?

The part where you think homophobia and racism is acceptable.

Listen, I get called a fair few things in games, I get it. I have a thick skin for most things. I'm Irish, I get the "potato" response all the time, I get called all the names under the sun. I'm old, I've heard it all. But I do not tolerate homophobia and racism. People need to learn, it is NOT okay to use terms like that.

  • @goatseathumans said in Sooner the better recent players gets fixed:

They are dealing with it. They are taking action because that behavior is not okay. What realstyli does about it should not bother you.

No, they are acting like an adult who is not going to look away and ignore racist and homophobic language. They are doing what someone with integrity and maturity does.

I think we may be wasting our time. Judging for their past posts, I can guess what community they came in from.

  • @realstyli True. We’ll leave it at that then.

  • I had a guy on my crew once who said he dispised people using the word ‘fa**it’ and he always reported people for using it.

He then used ‘fa**it’ to mock every crew we sank over the next 2 hours. I recorded him saying it and reported him, no idea if he was banned or not, although Microsoft did thank me for the report.

  • @goatseathumans wow can you imagine how bad the world would be if everyone took your view on discrimination and abuse?

I often fly the Rainbow Flag just because I like it the most. It has the best visibility for finding your ship from underwater or through foliage. But it also causes me to get attacked more often than normal.

Haha same, me and my crew often fly the rainbow flag because it usually attracts ignorant people and I get satisfaction in sinking them as they swear at me in game.

  • @realstyli They should probably work on there insults, I don’t think there’s nothing wrong with being gay and I think Bob Ross is amazing!!!
I could only wish I had 1% of his talent! The guys a legend.

However I agree with everything you said, and the sooner it gets fixed the better. Let’s just hope when they add in there streamer mode that people don’t use that as a mask of anonymity to be toxic.

  • @solestone563412 said in Sooner the better recent players gets fixed:

That's a shame. I've hear inappropriate speech in-game quite often. Remember that there are a lot of immature boys who play this game (and most games). Not that they are the only guilty party. But they make up the lion's share of the problem.

Yeah. My actual tolerance for "inappropriate speech" is actually quite high. I swear like a... er... sailor myself in real life. So I don't really take much notice of being called certain things - the M word, the C word, the A word.

It's only when people cross the line into what is clearly discrimination that I take action. The first line about "oh, it's gay Bob Ross" made it clear to me exactly why his buddies used the F word following it, it wasn't accidental.

Don't expect homophobia, racism or sexism to disappear from the Sea any time soon.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect miracles, like in real life, but every little helps and I'd rather fight it than lie down.

I'm not gay myself and, to be honest, I probably would have let that one slide as immature humour on the lad's part if it wasn't for the chants of the F word after that.

  • @realstyli .

You hit the nail right on the head when you said this:

This time it was me, a man in his late 30s, old enough to have a thick skin about most things, but next time they could surround a lonely kid struggling with his/her identity and that kind of thing is enough to send them over the edge.

And you know what, thumbs up for putting yourself into someone else’s shoes. It’s always great to see people showing empathy for others, especially on the internet. It’s becoming a Rare thing these days.

  • So what's wrong with Gay bob Ross? If they are brits then Gay is first and foremost the word for happy.

I don't really see calling you a happy bob ross an insult to be honest.

  • @hynieth said in Sooner the better recent players gets fixed:

And, as I said in a reply above, I would have likely let that one slide as immature humour if it wasn't for the chants of the F slur that made it clear it was meant as a homophobic insult.

I'm pretty certain 'streamer mode' will only hide player names on your own screen if you activated it but it won't stop other people seeing player names if they do not have it active. (if that makes sense?)

  • @solestone563412 I actually had a conversation with my friend about this yesterday.
He’s knew to the game and asked if it’s a pride flag or just there because, so I explained the whole debacle what happened on the forums when it was first announced.
And he was exactly like me, we deliberately wear it to help root out those who cannot accept the possibility of others being different to them and take great pleasure in sinking them.

I personally find it very gratifying informing them that they just lost to something they hate so much, there’s no greater pleasure then denting a bigots ego xD

@Octopus-Lime Ahh, that actually does haha thanks matey, think I get it now.

  • @realstyli You should have maybe started out with that?

I usually "stream" my gameplays on Mixer, just to save if anything wrong happens. You can download and edit later to report.

Fairly sure it was in my anecdote in my OP. I tried to be as concise as possible and gave an account of the events in order of when they happened.

    I said:

  • @realstyli

If you are saving to SSD, the background usage from Nvidia' shadowplay is miniscule.
I have tested it on and off, and it's like 2 fps for me on a 1060.

If you still dont' want to use that, the screenshot works, so you can try that, if enabled it's
    cntrl + print screen.

And yes, it will be nice to have recent player lists for identifying pirates!

In hindsight, yeah, I should have taken a screenshot.

Shadowplay is likely not a big deal, as you say, in this game. I have a 1060 6GB and it does have plenty of headroom at 1080p. But it's more for other more demanding games that I turned it off, games where even 2 frames makes all the difference. And I'm admitting totally that I am too lazy to turn it on and off depending on game.

This is by doing nothing that things will never change.

It is very unfortunate if we have to report people because they don't know how to behave and respect others. It's not because you're in a video game where it's easier to say things to strangers than it has to be ignored. Those little words can hurt someone, especially in a games where you like to dream and escape from reality.

No matter where, it's unacceptable to insult people with homophobic, racist, sexist or whatever.

This is completely against the Pirate Code and the Xbox live terms and should be reported! If it doesn't hurt you, those words could hurt someone and by reporting those players you can prevent that. This is not a waste of time. You could help someone.

@RealStyli This is unfortunate that the recent players list is bugged but next time, try to open a support ticket with Rare, give them the time it happened in your session and I'm sure they'll be able to find those players :)

  • The amount of political correctness in this thread is outstanding! So what do you do in the streets when some one says the exact same thing? Call the cops? Report them to xbox live? I swear we live in the weakest society that has ever been known to man. Maybe if all these tenderonis actually acted like men society wouldn't be so easily offended by any and everything. Who cares what someone says, its words and if words cut you down then you probably need some toughing up. No matter the outcome it will never change. Xbox, rare and anyone else cannot control or enforce what someones going to say. They will say it here they will say it there. It's not going to stop, so dont waste your time. This is crying over spilt milk. Dont like what other people are saying just mute them and go on. This is why the options have been put into a game. And the people flying the flag to instigate are just as guilty as the guys that are name calling.

  • @batedpluto94545 Yea we should just let people discriminate and abuse people and not do anything about it... I hope you don't raise any kids with that mindset.

Why are you getting so offended by what others choose to do in this thread? Toughen up! If you do not like others discussing thier decision to report offensive behavior then just move on.

    See what I did there?

I’ve seen the damage words can do to people. You are not immune. You can underestimate the effects if you like, but there exists an incredibly rich body of research demonstrating how powerful social interactions can be on individuals, especially when they appear to be condoned or ignored by a dominant group. The anonymity and consequence-free environment afforded on the Internet has bred a culture where people feel free to explicitly express things they would not feel comfortable with in face to face interactions. I have been on Xbox live for almost two decades now, and they have always encouraged individuals to report, mute, and block people engaging in offensive behavior.

  • @batedpluto94545 said in Sooner the better recent players gets fixed:

Political correctness has nothing to do with it. It's human decency and empathy.

So what do you do in the streets when some one says the exact same thing? Call the cops?

I don't know where you live but here homophobia and racism are considered hate crimes, so yes I would.

I swear we live in the weakest society that has ever been known to man. Maybe if all these tenderonis actually acted like men society wouldn't be so easily offended by any and everything. Who cares what someone says, its words and if words cut you down then you probably need some toughing up.

Spoken like someone who has never had to deal with homophobic or racial discrimination on a daily basis. When you hear these things over and over, ad nauseum, it can hurt. I have friends who are gay and I've heard stories about how they were nearly driven to take their own lives over things like this. What you think is trivial is not. Gotta love the implied toxic masculinity, well done.

No matter the outcome it will never change. Xbox, rare and anyone else cannot control or enforce what someones going to say. They will say it here they will say it there. It's not going to stop, so dont waste your time. This is crying over spilt milk.

It certainly won't stop if people do nothing about it. Apathy is not going to help things get better.

Dont like what other people are saying just mute them and go on. This is why the options have been put into a game.

And they move on to attack someone else? Nah, thanks, I think I'll deal with them.

And the people flying the flag to instigate are just as guilty as the guys that are name calling.

Is it entrapment? Sure, but if they take the bait, they have themselves to blame.

  • @batedpluto94545

Because Xbox have rules that players should follow:

Xbox Live is designed to be enjoyed by everyone, and no one should ever have to feel unsafe or threatened on the service. Harassing and threatening others goes entirely against the spirit of friendly online gaming, and one of Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement’s primary responsibilities is ensuring that all users have the opportunity to have a fun and safe gaming experience on Xbox Live.

Content that could harm or harass a person, including yourself, or an animal. For example:
    [...]

    • Negative speech (including hate speech or threats of harm) directed at people who belong to a group, including groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, language, gender, age, disability, veteran status, religion, or sexual orientation/expression
      [...]

Yes it's different in real life but it's not the subject of this thread. Here we're talking about people who don't know how to behave and respect other players in Sea of Thieves, an online game on Xbox live servers.

Reporting players help to impact their Xbox reputation. A user whose reputation score has continued to fall due to many reports of bad behavior will begin to be matched with only other low-reputation players. This is how you keep players safe and let them enjoy their experience on games they play on Xbox live.

Maybe for you those are meaningless words but for some people it's not. We have no right to judge them, they are not weak, we don't know what they went through in their life. The point is, they just want to enjoy their games as everyone else. Muting players won't help to prevent those people to hurt someone else with their bad words. I believe, as a community, we should also think about others and help them to feel safe by reporting those who don't respect the rules.

  • @batedpluto94545 considering that abusing someone in public based on race/sexuality is a criminal offence, yes I would involve the police. Ignoring it is not the answer, neither is 'toughening up'.

As for the same occurring in-game, it is against both the Pirate Code and the Xbox Live Code of Conduct and as such is absolutely punishable.

    It is inexcusable.
