This screen-tearing is getting abyssmal...

  • Why has no one talked about this? I've never seen it this bad.

Since the update, a lot of us have been encountering bugs/glitches (mainly screen-tears from objects) that have to do with the sunshafts, shadows, and/or the ships themselves. These two GIF's I created were from last nights gameplay, and I've never encountered anything like this since after the recent update.

As you can see, it's as if there's a "wall" of screen-tear and it's making the fort in front of me just vanish, and then the resources in the ship disappear as well. Not only that, it was killer on my eyes. God forbid if I was susceptible to seizures, this could have possibly triggered someone with what was happening on my screen. I can also confirm it is NOT my hardware, at least currently. 3 of my friends have had screen-tearing issues, including the pirate I was with during this session, and a couple others on this forum have stated as such too. For him, each boat would have a "graphical spike", or that screen-tear wall and give away positions of other pirates on the horizon. All he had to do was look for the immense tearing of a boat in the distance. One of my other pirate buddies, (I run a small SoT Community Discord), has had no isues whatsoever. Although, he runs a 2080ti SLI setup. In saying, some may never experience this but I feel most have seen something off or fishy, at the very least.

I also caught wind that the devs encountered this on their livestream just recently too. I do not know what was said.

My gripe here is, is that I want to know if this is a known issue? I looked around and it's as if it's not happening to anyone on the forums at least. For me, and others that I know, this is extremely annoying. Having these fast, flashing screen-tears aren't safe for the eyes.

  • Unfortunately I cannot help you...
So, u can send a ticket to the support HERE
    Hope they help!

  • I have not experienced what you are, but I have experienced the return of something semi-similar. When you undock your rowboat from your ship, the island tends to be gone, or partially gone with floating objects. It returns to normal if you row towards where the island should be, but it does ruin immersion. I know this problem was around a while back, seems they brought it back again.

  • I submitted a ticket.

I'm just not sure why this isn't talked about more. I keep seeing others having issues like this, or a bit less, but nonetheless an issue at hand.

  • I sent them the report about this on Jan 5th when I started to encounter it with a video attached.

The main temp fix at the moment is to set the model detail setting in the game to common or lower until they patch it when it starts to occur and you can take it back up to mythical right after to see if it occurs for you in that session again.

  • This isn't screen tearing, this is an issue with the engine trying to cull objects that it thinks you can't see in order to try to boost performance (rendering stuff that isn't visible still uses CPU/GPU). The reason that setting the details to common or lower gets rid of the problem could be that the engine uses the object mesh to determine what to cull, so the lower detail of the object will not have as many edge cases where the engine gets confused on what to render.

They have obviously changed something in this area during an optimization pass and I would guess it has to do with the ladder since in both GIFs you are either looking at or near the ladder when it starts - and the recent patch notes said they changed the ladder LOD textures or model. I've also seen video of weird geometric planes appearing that originate from the ladder area.

Screen tearing is generally when your screen is showing two or more different halves of rendered frames.

  • What i noticed isn't a wall like this, but actually a geometric shape like a triangle tower going into the sky from ships, be it other player ships, my own ship or skellie ships. I'll try and get examples from the next play session, but this occurs and i can pinpoint ships behind rocks, because it will show me the geometric shape triangle tower behind the rock, but the geometric shape is actually behind the rocks as well. Hope i made some sense. This all started to occur after the most recent update, I'm also having terrible FPS. Before the update, I had great FPS and no graphical issues

  • This same type of tearing that Wee describes occurred during the 2019.01.09 Non-Stop Boombox Action Weekly Stream at 1:48:34 and also the island vanished with floating objects:

  • I have also noticed a number of graphical issues since the update last week. Prior to that there were basically none for me, the only one that I was aware of was with the flicker on the campfire on the outpost with the shipwreck on top of the mountain.

Since the patch I have encountered a lot of weird sorts of flashes (similar-ish but not identical to what is shown in the pictures in the OP's post), such as when looking up the stairs from the mid deck of the sloop towards the top deck. Also when on the jetty looking at my ship when at Golden Sands outpost and Sanctuary Outpost. A couple of other ones as well that I can't remember the specifics of.

It seems like something in the last update might have been broken.

  • I've had the exact same issue for the last 3 nights. Not as extreme as yours but bad enough. Relog sorts it out for a while, but death does not.

    Hopefully they'll get it sorted.

  • @weepaperboats noticed this the last time I played, these black walls seem to only take up the width/ length of the ship and they can get pretty high, which made me think it was something to do with the "framework"?(might not be the right term) of the sails but I have no idea

  • I get this every day/night since the Devil's Roar update. I am on P.C.

  • I don't have a picture cause i just went back to playing on xbox, i installed it on my pc the other day on my ssd (gotta take advantage of those load times) and got into a game and it looked like an absolute potatoe. All the textures looked like they were drawn with a crayon, it was nowhere near the beauty I've come to expect from the xbox version. My computer isnt top of the scale but it can easily handle this game maxed out at 1080p no idea why it was a potato.

  • @d3adst1ck That makes sense as everytime this has happened to me it was when I was looking at my boat, my ladder, when it occurred. I saw it happen earlier today as we were sailing but on a different boat out at sea as well at to ours. It looked like a sunbeam cutting down and covering their boat up at a distance and it was because I was looking at their ship which has the ladders on it!!!

  • Happend to me alot latley...

  • Glad to know I'm not alone.

  • As @TH3xR34P3R already stated, yeah its a bug, they are aware and there is a workaround as long as it is not fixed.

Go to Settings - Graphics settings - set Model Detail to Common, fixes it as it appears. Done

  • @weepaperboats

This happened to me last night as well, there is a short article on the Support site and some possible fix while it's dealt with as @CoyoTe4711 mentions above.

    https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360015305074-Nvidia-GPU-rendering-bug-and-how-to-fix-it

  • @weepaperboats I thought I was the only one since no one in my 3 other crews has this problem......is this possibly a PC issue then?

  • @xultanis-dragon said in This screen-tearing is getting abyssmal...:

Aye, it is a PC issue. Do you have an Nvidia GPU? Something is mentioned in the patch notes about it :)

  • @murkrage Yeah. Why is it always nvidia lol

  • @xultanis-dragon sit tight :), should be a fix coming soon. In the meantime try the aforementioned temporary fix.
