@je0rgie-p0rgie No worries matey! I loved this insight... Devil's Nest is my favourite just because it would be an island soo different to what we have right now... Also odd how some of these are on the islands that made it list... ?!?!
Some Insights from Gregg Mayles on the Design and Origins of Sea of Thieves
@musicmee Very odd indeed. Some of them look to have gone through some minor changes. For instance, Wanderers Archipelago sounds and looks very similar to Wanders Refuge and Three Peaks looks similar to Crooked Masts. I know these concepts are a couple of years old but I love speculating about this kind of stuff so bare with me for a moment.
On the second picture we see under the pink sticky note "What we want from the world" two notes down that says, "to release in stages and operate as a service." Then throughout the rest of the notes the idea of adding more or changing the world as needed seems to pop up quite a bit. Now we all know this, the Devil's Roar is evidence of this, but it seems like they have bigger plans to add many more islands down the road. Perhaps some of these "checked off" islands are planned for future releases we haven't heard of yet.
Just as a side note I thought it was really cool how Devil's Ridge was in the game at launch and literally happened to be on the ridge of The Devil's Roar. This had to have been planned purposefully so what other secrets / hints toward future expansions could these islands be hiding?
@je0rgie-p0rgie On a similar note...
Shark Bait Cove was the place to pick up the "bait" for the Hungering Deep to summon the Megladon!
and Thieves Haven is where Stitcher Jim went with his stolen loot!
I'm sure there's lots more to come in revealing how islands got their names!
Not only Stitcher Jim, there was a crew who used Thieves' Haven as a base before #spoilers, read the novel!
@katttruewalker I was trying to keep it spoiler free :P But aye, the novel does give away a lot more about islands and their name origins/stories.
@katttruewalker Ha! I'm looking forward to reading the novel. Someone wanted to get it for me for Christmas but they ended up buying the artbook instead :P I wasn't disappointed by any means but I've yet to get my hands on the book. Very much looking forward to it, I've heard nothing but excellent things about it.
Can some of the threads be re-surfaced in a historical forum? Having a topic such as this in there and things posted?
For instance I can't find Mike's post on 1st/3rd person anymore.
(You can find the reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/5m91u5/discussing_first_and_third_person/ but imo, this is the place that is "central")
(Also, if we are cleaning things up like this, add the first tales from the taverns to the playlist on youtube? I know they are separated by Rare vs Sea of Thieves youtube channel, but you can hit the little =+ and add them )

Episode 4@dekeita said in Some Insights from Gregg Mayles on the Design and Origins of Sea of Thieves:
" At the start of development we briefly considered procedural generation, but quickly discounted this given the handcrafted feel we wanted. "
A procedural generated world that was different every time you logged on coulda been amazing in its own right though.
Procedural generated world could have worked. A never ending ocean with islands to discover and explore, with a rich flora and fauna, much like No Mans Sky. A changing weather sytem and climate change over distance. You start where you logged out the last time or with an crew invite/join or maybe at discovered and charted outposts. Because the islands are procedural generated and been calculated on the fly on your computer when they become in sight range (your computer not the server calculates). Servers can have an huge population. It would have been a different aproache but could have been fun to.
Anyway thanks for this awesome post. It's very interesting to see how the development was done on creating sea of thieves
