Cheating

  • Am I the only one this is affecting? More and more I am seeing players using obvious mods/cheats. Players able to shoot through ship sides and get one-shot kills. Players able to stand next to exploding gunpowder barrels and seemingly suffer no ill effects. Players being hit 3+ times by sword while they wind up and complete their own sword power stroke (usually getting a one-hit kill with it too). These are but a few examples.

The game is becoming less and less enjoyable to due the constant cheating I see. I report what I can (as does my crew) but it seems to do no good. After running into another cheating galleon this evening, my crew and I had our first ever serious discussion about quitting the game permanently.

  • I would love to see an explanation of which of these purported cheats are actually possible. I assume that "cheats" must be implemented in the client, and cannot affect what the server does. I have heard of "aim bots" for example, that automatically guarantee a hit with a gun, and can see how that might be possible to be implemented at the server.

How though, might "God mode" be implemented. Surely hit registration is performed by the server, and the level of health of a character also maintained at the server. if you are standing next to a gunpowder keg that explodes, it should be the server that sends a message to your client, saying "You're dead! Play the green mist animation".

I do wish someone that understands these things would say what IS possible with cheats, and what is not. And, please, no anecdotal evidence about what happened to you. I want to hear from game builders, or preferably, Rare themselves.

  • Well, I ran into a group that 1 shot me 3x tonight despite being at full health every time, and always with the EoR. I find that interesting, because from my understanding, it's only supposed to do 80% damage.

  • Are you sure these are all cheats? Poster above (pete) made good points. I know you can shoot through a ship without cheats (unless they have removed this recently), but it is possible that they used cheats to aim or something.

Pretty much every case of "I got one shot by x weapon" can be explained by not realizing how much health you had or getting hit by weapons that you didn't realize you got hit by. I've killed players from behind while they were fighting someone else and killed players with one sniper shot while they get shot by a skeleton etc. and I've heard many people in these cases calling me or others a cheater in game chat. Of course this doesn't mean that cheaters don't exist but it makes it very hard to believe these kinds of stories for what the posters believe to be true and assert them as such.

If you've ever shot someone at the same time that your crewmember shoots them (and I'm sure most people have done this at some point) you can bet that the person you killed is probably thinking "w*f he just one shot me"

  • @galactic-geek

PC users can use a "macro" to quickly replay the keystrokes to switch from pistol to EoR, firing both in quick succession. To the victim, it looks like a single shot. The problem is that switching between the two weapons eliminates the usual reload animation. This is a well-known technique/exploit/cheat/call it what you will.

  • @surveyorpete I am aware of its existence, thank you.
@Kzoo-Kid I saw 1 animation, 1 gun, and heard only 1 sound; he was the only person in the middle deck with me too.

  • @galactic-geek just because you only saw one/heard one doesn't mean there only was one. There's countless explanations for what could have happened.

  • @kzoo-kid A brief replay showing how we died, and by whom, might be a nice addition to the game...

  • @galactic-geek Wholeheartedly agree. It would stop a lot of innacurate posts about cheaters, it would stop people from not believing when someone actually is cheating, and it would help players improve from their mistakes.

  • It’s PC players bud, I’m an Xbox guy and it happens when I put 5 rounds through a player.

  • If you ever get the Idea someone is cheating please raise a support ticket here.

That said this discussion has been going on and on but it was never proven that those cheats are even possible. Without going into too much detail (because too much information about how to cheat is a bannable offence) I can say that Aimbotting and Wallhacking might be possible but damage is calculated serverside. God-Mode etc is literally impossible.

I'd love to know what your Ping was when this was happening, I've been called Cheater (together with at least 2 other X-box players) when we came across a verry laggy group of pirates who to us were just standing still and yeah it registered our hits while their shots all missed. we had a ping of around 40/50 so I guess if you're laggy enough it might look like cheating but I can assure you it isn't.

  • I'm sorry OP, but your post demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding for this game. To clarify, alot of the so called "Cheats" can be a very simple hit registration problem, of which this game does poorly at calculating. I've run into people I've gotten hit markers that simply don't add up. Rifle + 3 Sword Swipes? 3 Pistol Shots? 2 Rifle Shots? My first inclination of running into people like this isn't that they are cheating.

Even lag can play a huge factor in how this game interacts with the player. Hitting people through walls? You probably got hit while not in cover, then the actual server detected much later. This is something common to games, SoT isn't unique in this. Hell, maybe its just me, but this patch has been seemingly much more laggier for me and a lot of other players seem to teleport more then usual.

Its strange that someone (Me) can go their entire Sea of Thieves play time and never run into a cheater. Yet some see cheats at every corner of the game. Maybe, you simply got steam rolled by a good crew? Maybe you guys aren't as good as you think?

  • @d-cottingham

Ahoy there and we're sorry to hear you feel that you're encountering a number of suspect incidents in game.

Generally we'd recommend submitting a ticket via Support in the first instance. It's very important to include as much detail such as time of day, location etc so that the data can be examined. Rare have said in the past they they have a zero tolerance approach and any instance which is identified as cheating will be addressed and the players banned. From what we know this is still an extremely small number.

As has been mentioned above, occasionally you can encounter strange incidents just down to how the game is behaving at that time, which is why detail included with your ticket is so important.

  • @friedwilly What you're decribing is just a good 2 man sloop crew fighting a galleon. I cant speak about aimbotting because it's really hard to know if someone is using it. It's possible but It's just as possible someone is really good at aiming.

As for the sloop not sinking, and being manouverable, well that's a sloop for ya. A single person can bail forever in a sloop without much trouble. I've been in sloops taking heavy fire from a galleon and fort fire and they were only hitting the exact 2 same spots all the time (so that's just 2 holes form dozens of cannonballs), so yeah bailing was easy.

If you're sailing a sloop with 2 people and you're in sync you can make great anchor turns and outmanouver a galleon with such ease it's not even funny anymopre.

Best thing you can do if you're bested is just admit you've been bested. I've seen people hit with almost 100% accuracy and reviewed footage afterwards and found they were just really good. Aimbotting can be recognised by the snap aiming it does. When it doesn't it's just someone who's good at amining. Look up pro Overwatch players who use hit-scan weapon chars (like Widowmaker or McCree) and see how fast they aim then you'll know people like that in SoT will have 90%+ hit rate

  • @friedwilly

For instance, when we pulled up we unleashed hellfire on them and they never sunk.

Honestly mate, this is something only a sloop can usually survive. It sounds like you fought a well seasoned duo running double gun. Are you aware that the sloop can have every possible hole open, and still be bailed down to dry? One person alone can just bail and sustain the vessel with a high amount of holes.

Once the battle got to the open sea, this sloop was maneuvering in a way I have never seen a vessel maneuver in this game.

I mean sloop is already a highly maneuverable ship, without actually seeing it myself I can never say for certain. I am no cheat expert, but I don't think you can manipulate things controlled on the server side of things. Boat is controlled on the server side not player side. Bullets going through walls? Again, I don't think thats something they can do on their end with cheats.

Not trying to be blunt, but it very well could have been you getting steam-rolled by a strong duo.

  • So I came here because I got killed by a cheater too..

I was skeptical at first because:
I was on the island, this guy eyed me from the distance. I could see it glows. So I ran away early (he was still on the boat, a bit far from the island). I hid behind the large rock. There is no way he could have known where I went to since I took off early before he land. Less than a good minute later, he literally found me and killed me. As if he could see me.

I thought, why not go back to that island and see if he was cheating or not..

So I went and I was not even near the island. I was still a DISTANCE AWAY and I am already dead with ONE SHOT. ONE SHOT. 100% accuracy.

I am done with this game. It kills the fun..

  • You can't always see when someone is spamming nanners while you are shooting at them. This would be why you can shoot someone 4 or 5 times and they are still alive and well. I do this a lot and am constantly being called a cheater with the in game voice. Doing this while being stun locked by a sword however is near impossible unless you can out range it.

As far as being double tapped by 2 guns, using the scroll wheel on mouse or weapon switch on controller right after firing allows you to shoot the second gun instantly. This isn't a PC macro or cheat it's a mechanic. Why should you have to watch a weapon reload before switching to your second weapon? Just writing that it sounds silly. Missing your double shot leaves you very very vulnerable since you have 2 weapons that now need to be reloaded.

Last but not least, a Kill cam of how you were killed that could also could be skipped would be incredible!!! I wouldn't at all be surprised if it was implemented with the Arena.

  • I hardly meet people I suppose to be cheaters. I suppose that, if I am shot by snipers in a row while fast moving, f.e. Had once a player who has been invisible - and have been invisible myself after glitching in a fort. Therefore, meh, could be network latency, glitches, ... . I once shot someone who wanted to climb aboard my galleon with a shot from the shotgun. I was accused of cheating, but that was not and is not the case. Fortunately, I had recorded a video, as he did, and we compared them.

    • The event from his point of view: He emerges just before the ladder, climbs up with 100% health and is killed with one shot.
    • The event from my point of view: He loses health just before arriving at the ladder, he emerges with less than 100% health and is killed with one shot.
His video doesn't show the loss of health, mine does.

The same applies to hits in cover - behind stones, walls. While I am in cover, an opponent still sees me standing free. Its representation produces a hit on a still visible person, the server evaluates this ... sometimes ... and sometimes not. I am not sure wether the server rolls a dice.

I had another experience once when I attacked a galleon full of children, unknowingly. But they were twice as fast in their movements as I was. I never was able to hit them. Not by sword, not by shotgun. Even if they stood in front of me. They sent me their record - I move as if in a trance and shoot at places where the opponent was just now, but is no longer.

Let me add something: I use to play Word Of Tanks in a clan, where we experience similar things. Beeing hit through rocks, walls, mountains, disapearing shots, invisible tanks. Such things can't be ruled out with network-based multiplayers. In World Of Tanks, you can show the crossair in "server-view", and it differs quite a lot from your own.

But I experience such things very, very rarely - wether on Sea Of Thieves or on World Of Tanks.
