How to beat a Kraken

  • Since I am seeing more and more posts about it here is a copy of one of my posts on reddit on how to deal with it when you have enough supplies to manage. I recommend at least 150 cannon balls, planks and bananas to keep on board at all times to cover for most encounters in the game.

The cooldown on the kraken is 2 hours, ~5min between when forts and fleet battles rotate as they lock out its spawn when there is one active in the session and no one has done it. She also attacks ANY ship in the session at random in this time frame, amount of loot is not a factor at all. (I can also confirm again from my experience that she will pop right after a merge to another session almost guaranteed hence another reason to keep your supplies up and be ready).

Get a Galleon crew together and when it pops all use a Blunderbuss and Eye of Reach. Keep the last round in the guns so that you can skip a good chunk of the ammo reload animation when going back and forth from the ammo box on the ship. This combination lets you do the most damage per pellet and less going back and forth for ammo so you can all focus them down.

Aim for the head of the tentacles when they show especially the one that wraps around the ship to get it off the ship as fast as possible and focus down the closest ones first working your way around the ship as they pop up to the ones further out.

When it wraps make sure you are paying attention to where it pops is head up, there is no point to trying to kill it via the body that wraps the boat you will do no damage this way. If it wraps blocking the stairs it becomes a 50/50 chance between you taking it out in time before you get sunk, as such, the optimal places for it to wrap during a fight is the back and front of the ship.

Keep one to two crew on bail and repair duty, rotate people as needed for this. You can bail through the wrapping tentacle if it wraps above the stairs at this point in time (might change in the future) when you angle the throw of the water with any space available over and out of the ship.

Kegs are a one shot on the tentacles as well so if you have a stock of them you can use them on a few of them to speed up the fight (best used when they suck you up).

Once all go back into the water and the black around the ship disappears that is when you have defeated it and it should count on the commendations for it.

It will not count when you are in an alliance and are not a ship in the black nor will it count if you are on the ferry of the damned at the time of the kill.

Make sure to have a rowboat on your ship in the event you do sink so that you can still collect any loot in the water for the ones that you have taken out or recover any loot that you did have at the time since it does not sink with the ship.

There is a 5min timer on loot when its on the surface of the water and will glint when in range to be seen, one or two people can rotate interaction of the more important loot whilst the others bring the ship back to where it was sunk if you don't have a rowboat.

I know you may think its easier in a Sloop but from my experience its easier to deal with overall in a Galleon and don't bother doing the hunt in a Brigantine, it is too much a glass cannon ship to even bother.

Yes the dev's are aware of the difficulty and the odd bug with it since they fought it in the recent stream and got sunk, so you are not special thinking that you are feeling like its targeting you specifically and you are having trouble with it.

  • Excellent work on this guide @th3xr34p3r !
I never knew that there was a timer for cooldown on Karen though? I thought she was just a random encounter like the Meg?

Either way this will be helpful for other folk. ⛵️💣🐙

There is and using the timer I have predicted 5 times in a row over the span of 2 days when she would attack the Galleon I was captain on +/- ~5s from the call out.

There is also a timer on the Forts and Fleets if no one is doing them (latter seems to have been stealth patched to up the timer on them for being active to let players get to them in time in some cases when close enough). They last between 30-45min before its taken down by the session server to prepare to rotate in the next one.

I have also had times where the same Fort will be active up to 3 times in a row before its swapped to another one in some sessions, this is with the crews and I getting them completed as well.

  • @th3xr34p3r excellent work there matey on researching all of this!

More than happy to provide details based on experience and after making sure I can repeat them multiple times, all this has let me get the 10 kills in the span of about 4 days as of the release of this update.

  • From my experience, the easiest way to beat the Kraken is simple be on a sloop. No need extra tips for that ehe.

The hardest is being on a Brigantine, if he/she attacks you, it's your Doom. You're sucked out of the ship and you can wave it Good bye.

The Galleon is the fairest battle, if you have a working crew it's great.
Just let one in charge of the repairs under decks in case the kraken grabs and/or cover the lower deck entrance and everything should be okay.

They have it adjust difficulty based on the ship that it is attacking at the time, but I just find it more of an annoyance to deal with it on a sloop since I only use that ship when I am solo and want to do a bit of grinding of the cargo runs when LFC is dead for the night/morning.

  • @th3xr34p3r oh yeah, cargo runs seems to be a calling for emergent encounters ahahaha they're eager to ruin your rum bottles 😈😜

However I'd say Meg is the real challenge for sloopers. I never know where she is, constant miss the shot due to waves and ship's bouncing.

I generally ignore the megs at the moment when in solo, I just sail closer to an island or rocks when needed or let them just swim along if they are the passive type.

I only have the ghost meg left to find and kill at least once, the rest I am am getting close to starting on grade 4 on the kills at the moment.

Also one thing I forgot to mention in the last reply is regarding the brig as a solo use case for it: grinding out the miles sailed for the factions.

I do this with it when I want to get some extra miles in since I mathed it out as well that you can do 1 nautical mile (2.5-3 squares on the map) every 5min of sailing with full billow on both sails at all time and just adjusting to go around the map as needed in any direction. Wind direction is also a high majority of the time dictated by the position of the storm in the old world so you can use that to predict your tacking as needed.

  • @th3xr34p3r Nice guide :) Could you elaborate on the spawn mechanics of the Kraken? I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean. The way I interpreted it is:

    • She only spawns in between fort/skele ship battles
    • After she is defeated, she will not spawn for a minimum of two hours

Is this correct? I'm actually in the process of making a YouTube video about how to defeat her solo and am having a hard time tracking down her spawn info. I too thought she couldn't spawn while a fort or ship battle is up but I've had some people tell me she has spawned on them while a fort was up. Problem was I haven't seen any evidence of it but I also can't disprove it.

This is correct, time between when a fort/fleet is not active and the 2hr cool down since the last ship was hit with the kraken in the session is when she will show up on any ship in the server.

This is consistent and I use it to alert all ships in the grind fleet to get ready to fight it the moment those two factors align since as stated in one of my other replies I have consistently called out the attack 5 times in a row when I was verifying whilst working on the main commendation.

  • @xcalypt0x lol this is not always correct not only have I figured out how to guarantee spawn anything but the shrouded ghost, I can confirm the kraken does NOT have a 2 hr cooldown. after I read this post I jumped into a game with my old crewmate and spawned the kraken back to back . thanks for the info though I'm sure it was accurate for you as you were doing your thing, not calling OP a liar just stating there is a way to spawn it more than once every two hrs

  • @p0pc0rnh3mer01d are you able to share how to get it to spawn?

  • @xcalypt0x unfortunately as weird as it may sound to some i have completely stopped sharing any info or tips on this game as even when you ask ppl not to they spread like wildfire. i'd rather not have the whole lfg doing krakenhunting constantly
